Nokia N900 not coming until some time in November
We've just heard some pretty sour news. Peter Schneider, head of Maemo marketing, has waxed official about the N900's release and quite casually noted that it'll "start shipping during November 2009," which as you very well know is a whole month later than originally expected. An interesting tidbit to his post is that he notes Nokia had lent out 300 pre-production units to the community, and he stresses the importance Nokia places on the feedback received. Connecting the dots might suggest that feedback wasn't quite as hot as Espoo had hoped, and a few last-minute refinements are now being applied. Either way, you're gonna have to refill your patience for potentially another month of waiting.

WoW!!! This is called news...
EN900
Still worth the wait.
yep i can wait, whats another month huh, as long as its not next year. im glad they did the feed back thing, it'll be fine tuned when i get it.
more than enough time to reserve a paycheck or two for it
My pre order page stated 11/12/2009
Ive pre ordered but dont mind waiting because Nokia wants to make the experience better.
Uuurgh, sucks, but I appreciate Nokia taking the time to iron out the issues - I'd much rather than a better product than a product sooner with more bugs! Let's hope they improve it!
That's funny, yesterday the Elisa store rep. said that my preorder will be shipped next week. Keeping my fingers crossed!
That goes hand-in-hand with T-Mobile rumoured device launches being set for November! Uhm... I got butterflies in my tummy!
If that would improve the end user's experience, then I say it's worth the wait. I know N900 is a great device and it's setting standards for others to follow.
Just yesterday I went in to the flagship store as I've done so many times before. Before they told me that N900 would probably be in shops mid november, but just yesterday when I asked, a representative told me that word had come in earlier that day from Nokia that the N900 will be in shops first week of November, at least in Finland!
I just heared from www.verkkokauppa.com buyer that nokia has promised shipments to start in two weeks. Don't know how reliable info that is but, it's just about the time already!
i hate to be the n00b asking but, where can we get one in the states?
Not from a carrier. It will also only work on T-Mob for "3G" data.
barry: Not AT&T?

November has thirty days in it. It starts in just over a week.
It really isn't that far away.
Agreed. My sentiments exactly.
Maemo, maemo. Why must we wait, Maemo?
This is exactly what happened with the N97... and that ended up getting delayed so long by the time it was released it was already superseeded by other devices and it crashed and burned. In my opinion that came down to arguments between carriers and nokia about 3rd party apps [skype] and also limits on phone branding.
I think we've got some of the same elements at play here. In addition there are some network operators (e.g. vodafone in the uk) who have been pushing the N97 hard and probably have alot of stock, and know that when the N900 comes out no-one will be interested in the N97 whatsoever.
A month. A bit over 4 weeks. Not like it's delayed for next year.
The n97 doesn't really compare with the n900. Sure both were delayed, but the N97 crappy performance issue was created when Nokia decided to start using a crappy processor in a their flagship instead of going all out.
I played around with one of the pre-production units we received at our company. All and all a very impressive smartphone.
- Very fast and responsive.
- Keyboard is excellent.
- Screen is very good and responsive.
- Browsing experience very good since everything basically works, flash etc.
you didnt have a problem with the keyboard? like the space bar being on the side? i wish it had the touch pro 2 keyboard :)
I don't understand what's the big deal about the 3 row/space bar on the right all about... I've used my brother's N97 a bit and felt comfortable with it.. had 0 problems with the keyboard.. and I expect my N900 to be the same thing.. :) :)
having done a cursory check most retailers have order dates around 30th Oct -1st Nov. including Nokia Retail which is run by mobilephonesdirect.co.uk.
Anyone else seen anything?
Can someone confirm that you can use this device horizontally as well as vertically? It's useless for me if I cannot use it horizontally!
You can use it lying, sitting or standing.
So far, the complaint has been that it can only be used in Landscape mode, except for phone functions which operate on Portrait mode. Apparently Nokia indicated that will be remedied with a firmware update and all functions will be available in both modes.
I don't remember where I read that, maybe a review...

The article and your reaction are a bit curious... you do realize that October is almost over... it's the 22nd today so we're not talking about a long wait or any major flaws apparently. But I'd rather they refine whatever they can now.
Anyway, I'm really struggling because I just don't know what applications will ever be available for the Maemo OS... and I don't know that I want to be forced to hook up with T-mobile to use the 3G on the device.
I agree - my preorder just got bumped from yesterday to November 18th :(
Incidently travelling to Helsinki late December .... should go and tell them a few tings! :)
/G
It just means that it will have a better firmware and more apps available at launch. Visit the talk.maemo.org, and you will see that the community is working full speed. And several portrait mode user cases are being worked on this very moment.
Wow, nokia fixing issues with their smart phones before they come out, that just may be crazy enough to work.
Had they given out a few hundred n97's they could of really protected their rep.
You could HAVE preserved your own rep if you didn't comment.
I agree that it is always better to delay and release a better product, than to rush the release and have people left disappointed.
BTW - you should go ahead and stop using "waxed" in your articles - it's over.
I welcome responsible manufacturing. If a company feels strongly enough that they can make a device better before release and has to push back the wait by a month (especially one this badass), I take it as Nokia is being smart. I'd much rather wait for a more satisfying device than to get the hottest device RITE NOW!
I am sprry Nokia Maemo, but my heart is not set upon you anymore.... After I saw how marvelous the HTC Leo / HD2 is.... and hwo it would be upgradable to WinMo 7... I part from thee...
"Connecting the dots might suggest that feedback wasn't quite as hot as Espoo had hoped [...]"
Feedback may have been hot and Nokia may still decide to delay release a few weeks to polish the product.
"Nokia had lent out 300 pre-production units to the community."
I guess Engadget was left out, hey? LOL.
they had to add MMS because people where pissed they where trying to pull an apple they got this confused with there country where email is the mms and mms is dying off but that wont fly here
As one of the lucky 300, I'm still blown away by the N900.
It's the most awesome gadget I ever owned. For the first time, you feel the power of mobile computing in your hands. It's not a smartphone anymore, but a new paradigm.
I saw a couple of guys in a restaurant in Sf the other day playing with a N900 and a N97 mini.
In my most subtle way possible I was leaning over trying to catch a glimpse of these beasts.
Man, they are both sweet phones but the N900 is a killer. saaaawwwwweeeet.
One of the guys was having multiple orgasms over it - made for a very messy lunch ;-)
Me...I still have a hankering for the mini - me likey the whole setup of the phone and it will be a nice hold over until Nokia gets their whole Maemo thing locked down and worked out on the 900 and the other phones coming out in 2010
Maybe so they can get a compass in it? Seems to be the only thing missing...
So will this phone be subsidized like pay like $200 if you get a contract with T-Mobile?
Q1 2010.
I consider sell my 2g Iphone for this phone, anyone how much is T-mobile gonna sell this and is data plan require?
What could have delayed the release?
- Serious malfunctions? - Not from what we've read from testers.
- Wishes for software improvements? These could be always delivered with later firmware releases. I think that there are enough enthusiasts that would buy a N900 instantly as it is. More than Nokia could build so fast.
- May be they want to sell some more N97.
- What I hope: Some hardware changes to bring features that are not fixable by software. Please: an AB micro USB-connector for USB host function without hacking! And the magnetometer sensor.
I want one badly but I cannot buy it until I find out if Google is going to put Maps on it. I wish Google would say something, anything, even a peep, about its plans for Maemo. ANYTHING PLEASE SAY SOMETHING.
Still not long enough of a wait to "fix" usb OTG support. That said, I've had a chance to use a pre-production n900 and it does live up to the hype. X terminal, flash, good sound. Hype machine worked just fine (great for crashing a brain dead party). I think they keyboard is pretty poor and the screen feels a bit small, but these are compromises for pocketability (i.e. much smaller form factor compared to the 810) which is OK with me.
Two of my buds already received their online orders for the N900 and are happily pleased. What's the deal?
