Nokia sues Apple, says iPhone infringes ten patents
Boom. Nokia's just hit Apple with a patent infringement lawsuit, claiming that "all iPhones models shipped" infringe on ten of Espoo's patents relating to GSM, UMTS, and WiFi. According to Nokia's press release, the patents in question have been licensed by some 40 other companies, "including virtually all the leading mobile device vendors," and Apple's refused to agree to "appropriate" license terms. That's pretty vague, actually -- it could either mean that Apple was willing to license the patents at a price less than what Nokia demanded, or it could mean that Apple refused to pay at all. We'll obviously be covering this one in great detail as it progresses -- stay tuned for a fun decade or so of litigation.

GO NOKIA.. Eat that "Holy" Apple alive.... I am so happy to hear this news... I am sick of Apple adding features and saying "THIS IS A BRAND NEW CREATION BY APPLE!!!"
only MS fanboys like yourself believe that. I bet you've never even seen an Apple product launch and are here running your mouth off like you think you know something.
What do you mean... someone had "cut and paste" before apple introduced it to the world?
It's funny how "WinMo_is_trash" (name says it all btw).. thinks that I am automatically a Microsoft fanboy... If you want to call me a fanboy of something.. at least call me a Nokia fanboy.. xD
It is not even that much money... the estimat is 12$/ iphone - w/ 21.4 million iphones sold it 265M usd. which is a pittance to these guys who took in roughly 14b usd
They took in 14 bil in profit not revenue (big difference).
They took in 14 bil in revenue not profit (big difference). Order makes a difference.
So Nokia only stands to lose 25 percent of revenue? That's all? Oh... well, they don't have much to worry about at all then. I must be wrong.
Nokia is currently in talks with 40 other company's. There going after everyone and apple isn't agreeing to pay the amount Nokia wants.
Nokia has NOTHING to worry about, you ignorant Americans know nothing about the the global nature of the wireless industry. Nokia makes 10 phones PER SECOND, most of which are sold within days in Asian and European markets, and the VAST majority of which are S40 dumb phones. In these markets, which are so large that they make the North American market seem irrelevant, Nokia is the de-facto standard, and 9 out of 10 people own a Nokia. In the exploding market of Africa, Nokia is the only brand that is known, and is essentially the sole provider of mobile phones as well as network infrastructure. There is an entire generation of hundreds of millions of people in Africa that know only of the Nokia brand and the positive change it has brought to citizens of African countries, providing extremely cheap mobile phones to the masses. While doing all this, Nokia has maintained an average profit margin of 33%. Nokia sells more phones in two months than Apple has sold in 2 years; Apple is not even comparable to Nokia in any way. All you Americans need to get over the fact that Nokia doesn't care about the North American market because of the ridiculous, anticompetitive, anti-consumer operations practiced by your mobile service providers and sanctions by your government.
well in that case then no one has anything to worry about
Mark, some Americans know what you're talking about and we are as sick about it as you.
GO Nokia.
BOO Apple.
It'd be really better for Apple customers if Apple legally licensed Nokia's IP, then iPhone wouldn't....
Sorry, the call was dropped.
(tune) what goes around comes around (la la la)
Can someone with the power just ban Detox, sad old Paul Chapel must have set the record for low ranking no matter what he calls himself.
Nokia fanbois are all gathered. Just look at them poor bastards high-ranking eachother
alright, i only got half way thru the comments before I couldn't resist to comment.
I'm scandinavian, so you can call me biased towards, nokia or ericsson, well i guess nokia, because my primary phone is a nokia. But of course I'd claim that i'm totally neutral.
I see quite some people mentioning multi-touch, tell me one usecase where a mobile phone without multitouch would not be a mobile phone; it can place calls and video calls, it can send SMS'es and MMS'es, it would still be a mobile phone, right?
mobile/cellular phones without GSM/WiFi, what are they? iPod Touch? Not even that much, to be honest...
Yes, Nokia is out late, but had they been totally tight about their rights, iPhone might not even have existed yet. So waiting until now can be interpretted in two ways, either they set up a trap, or they let others (in this case Apple) innovate and drive technology forwards, but karma's a bitch and comes right back at you.
But being out late does not deny that scandinavia, and later east asia, had (and still has) the most advanced mobile network. While scandinavia is not sure what they need 7-10 Mbps for, Japan and Korea have developed their own extensions that go beyond every imaginary use of mobile broad band both in scandinavia and the rest of the western world. However, the way that scandinavia, and the rest of Europe has chosen to use this excess of mobile bandwith still exceeds what American imagination can comprehend; unlimited data plans at a fraction of the cost, unlimited SMS is almost standard with a $10 subscription, only the sender of an SMS or the one placing a call pays the 4 cents per min or message it costs.
However i didn't mean to make this a battle on price... I'd just like to remind you that your networks is 5 years behind europe and asia, and you can still be proud, considering you didn't know phones could be wireless until, 10-15 years later than us, and still have something like 80% of all your phones on wired connections, while we don't have to pretend, when it's actually a fact that 60-70% of our phones are mobile... So of course Nokia, and probably also (Sony/)Ericsson has quite a few patents files way ahead of Apple in the mobile technologies area.
Smile - you're doing good, but piracy is communism you know, there's no such thing as free lunch.
Ha. Thats awesome.Nokia are jealous because they cant
catch up and control the market . No wonder its because iphone allows
everyone to profit from - including you and me - click here >>> www.serious-iphoneprofits.cjb.net
you do realize that nokia owns nearly half the world's cellphone market right?
catch up?
seriously, troll harder bro.
Just like the apple to take or be given credit on anything that will glorify them or back up there claims, examples: iphone helped to get us out of recession. and now iphone is the cause for nokia's market loss...just like when they had the court battle with palm over multi touch and 1! it was found that they didnt acually won the patents and 2! apple's iphone had way more of palm's patents in there iphones than palm did of theres. look it all up how there phone and contact u.i. was a ripoff of palm's u.i. and the now theyre going to go and " get a free ride off of nokia innovative ip " iphone you stole and put together a good combo but little by little people are realizing your going the way of the moto RAZR remember that crazy phone?
Not sure what argument you've been following Detox, but if their Devices & Services division, which makes up only 69% of their profit streams, itself only receives 25% of its profits from smartphone sales, a decline in smartphone market share of 10% year on year (which is a very generous estimate) then using totally iffy maths that really isn't logical and doesn't hold up at all, but is still better than yours, they've lost approximately 2% profits directly as a result of the decline of their smartphone share. Which really isn't much to write home about in the grand scheme of things.
Apple is not special. If 40 other companies have deemed it right to pony up for using the same technology, Apple needs to follow suit.
How about this oldie patent from 1987 and its derivatives that Apple is about to infringe upon? HTC has been known to be extremely stingy about enabling this on devices (licensing maybe?) and Nokia has had it on pretty much every device they've ever made.
http://www.google.com/patents/about?id=lbYzAAAAEBAJ
BTW, Nokia pretty much owns the tech and all of its siblings. The Zune HD doesn't count because it isn't a phone.
So does this mean it's really the Nokia iPhone?
if apple doesn't license those patents looks like the iPhone will have to become a regular iTouch...
NOKIA is a major loser!
They waited 2 years before filing that lawsuit? Oh c'mon!
Nokia just can't accept the fact they are losing, the goin' bitter already! LOL
Nokia sucks!
Ofcourse Nokia tried to negotiate with Apple first, they don't sue other companies for fun. Apple just needs to accept what all others have done in the mobile industry. All companies are cross-licencing with what technology they got, Apple was just trying to free-ride on other companies work. If Apple comes up with something others want then they can make their own cross-licencing deals with the other players.
"hey waited 2 years before filing that lawsuit? Oh c'mon!" first have a look at this nice little youtube video...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zNWySiZpirA
Now when we have got that out of the way.. Think about it, when the iPhone came out in 2007, Nokia probably asked for the IP fees like they have with every other phone maker. Apple and Nokia probably have not come to an agreement in the last two years.
Suing someone is not the first option... it's the last.. Apple has been less then courteous.. hence Nokia had to sue ..
first nokia isnt desperate
their just pointing this out
and even if the iphone made some damgaes into the cellphone world they still got a long way to go to defeat nokia
and Nokia isnt very famous in America its more famous in Europe and Asia thats why these iphone-american lovers dont know Nokia
THEY HAVE THE BEST MOBILE PHONE POSSIBLE and they had app store and all that crap iphone has americans are just too blind to see that the symbian os is great i mean is my 5310 does things iphone cant do like listening my music through bluetooth or cuztomise it or put themes that looks new to it to make it nicer
well, while it's totally true that Apple's Iphone is a very innovative mobile phone it is also probable that they may be using technologies that were created and patented by nokia, by example a codec for audio on GSM networks was created by nokia on 1995 as Enhanced Full Rate or EFR or GSM-EFR or GSM 06.60, probably Apple and Nokia haven't reached any agreement yet because apple does not want to pay what nokia asks (greedy company to say the least) and that's the reason they say they will sue. most likely this will end in a settlement outside the courts and be sure all this costs incurred will be passed to us, the customers. for apple fanbois nokia is not very popular in the US market but outside US is one of the most sold brands. think how many models nokia have for every budget being those dirt cheap phones the most sold against only one model iphone on a fixed price wich a lot of people can't afford anyways. it's simple different markets diferent game. nokia is losing money it's true but nokia mobile phone division its not their only business.
Oh, hi guys. Sorry I'm late. There was trouble at the lab with the running and the exploding and the crying, one of the monkeys stole the glasses off my head.
Engadget PC fanboys to anti-apple stories: "Apple are criminals and they suck"

Here's the filing.
