He's twisting away from the camera because he's shy, obviously. Acer's
Aspire 1420p tablet made an appearance today at a Chinese press event, and our regional
Engadget correspondents were there to grab as many glimpses as their cameras would allow. What makes it even sweet, though, is knowing this little guy's coming to the states, as a rough product page was found on Acer's US site. From what we read, it's got a 11.6-inch LED-backlit multitouch screen with WXGA resolution, an Intel Celeron processor with integrated graphics, up to 8GB RAM and 320GB HDD, 802.11b/g/Draft-N, Bluetooth, a multi-card reader, webcam, and optional 3G. Some secrets remain, of course, like price and release date -- where's Encyclopedia Brown when you really need him?
[Thanks, Dennis L]

Nice to see a laptop with a new "twist" hahaha......(lame joke drums)
You are right, that's very lame.
Thank god... I though 1420p was another scam HD resolution.
Is Intel Celeron still around?
that's smexy
I do believe, my good sir, that something was lost in translation. The Chinese link says this:
Aspire 1420P: Intel Core 2 Duo SU2300
If so ... DO FKN WANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nice but what is it?, If it's a Netbook then it's too big. If it's a laptop then it's too small. Inbetween just doesn't work for me. I need at least 14" for a laptop and maximum 10" for a netbook.
It's not for you, then.
There have been some netbooks that go up to 12"
Like the dell mini-12
They're just not common. But, some of the other specs on this thing don't really fit a netbook (1366x768 resolution? non-atom cpu?) Hard to tell if they're trying to sell this in the netbook arena or not.
fail ever heard of tablet pcs
The size difference between a typical 10.1" and Acer's 11.6" is negligible, because they've managed to reduce the amount of bevel on these new 11.6" tablets to a minisule amount, even less than than their non-convertible 1410 (Timeline) laptops.
Having used a Timeline, I can safely say that by optimizing the footprint, the Acer does fit inside my Targus case which was designed for 10 inch netbooks. Give me some 3Qi technology, and I'll never need an ebook reader.
aw i wish it had 9400M in it
Celeron??? booo, it better be less than $500.00 or its no deal
Looks sweeet! Might replace my tx2000's with it, its been almost 2 years since ive gotten a new lappy :) Just waiting to see if its really a core 2 duo or not :D
on acer's website I'm seeing the intel celeron processor, but engadget china gives it a intel core 2 duo
i'm guessing there's a mistake somewhere on acer's part, because i couldnt believe it'd be a celeron...
Anyone else think, "WTF? 1420p? That's such a weird resolution, but hey, at least it's quite high for a tablet."?
I think that's just the model number, not the resolution.
from acer's website:
# 11.6" HD 1366 x 768 (WXGA) pixel resolution, high-brightness (200-nit) LED-backlit TFT LCD with integrated multi-touch screen, supporting finger touch and pen input
# 11.6" SD 1024 x 600 (WSVGA) pixel resolution, high-brightness (200-nit) LED-backlit TFT LCD with integrated multi-touch screen, supporting finger touch and pen input
While we're at it, engadget china seems to have an estimated cost of 20005 TWD (converted to $617 USD) and "listing in November", which I assume means it'll be sold (at least over there) in the coming month.
1420p is the model number......
*sigh*
You guys seriously think that I wouldn't understand how displays work? The fact that the model number has a lowercase p threw me off at first, then it was like, "Oh."
The case sticker on picture 6-of-9 says "Intel Centrino" which is available in a Core 2 Duo. Although I would tend to trust Acer's site which says Celeron.
Anyway, I'm actually pretty impressed by Acer on this. The screen spans the entire thing with very little bezel. Depending on price and battery life, a very temping machine.
Draft-N?
C'mon guys, it's been finalised now, no need to be silly and keep playing this "draft" game.
You're missing the bigger news. The site also shows the 1820PT and 1820PTZ which are higher end versions. I just wish one of them had a Sprint wireless option.
Personally, I can't wait for this version if the specs are true. When I heard they were releasing a 1420 and 1820 version of the tablet, I was worried the US would only get the lower version with single core processor and smaller 4400mAh battery. The 1420 version looks like the one for me, the SU2300 processor is very close in benchmarks to the higher processors, and can play Youtube HD virtually lag free while prolonging the battery. It seems that the 1420 version is getting the bigger 5600mAh battery, too, which should be good for almost 8 hours. I've been holding off on the tablet kick, but it seems that multi-touch and W7 could finally make it useful. On the edge of my seat for a price...
They should offer this one as a dual boot with Android.
Actually, Linpus and Android.
The specs on one of the screenshots on Engadget Chinese show a "Genuine Intel CPU U1400" which, after googled; appears to be a Core Solo processor. On another part of the Engadget Chinese site they say it's CULV and yet on the final specs they say it's Core 2 Duo. Way to confuse us guys! Hopefully this all means there are upgrade options up to a Core 2 Duo. [crossing fingers]
And I meant U4100
Just FYI, if it's like the newer 1410 that just got released with Win7, then it has a DUAL-CORE Celeron 2300. Ignore the name, it's basically a stripped down ULV Core 2 Duo with less cache. Twice as fast as the original Core 2 Solo that came with the earlier 1410, and a hell of a lot faster than an Atom proc in any netbook.
It's a convertible tablet.
Not everything has to fit into your netbook or laptop categories.
I'd quite like to have one!
Am I correct in assuming that I could pop my SIM card (with AT&T $15/month unlimited data) into this and use the connection? I've been using the SIM with a smartphone and tethering for months and never had any problems with them complaining. Can they tell/do they care if you are using the SIM with a notebook?
They can tell the IMEI number of the device the SIM card is plugged into, which they can then trace back to a device. So, while they may not be able to definitely tell the difference between "your phone alone" vs "your phone + tethering to your laptop" ... they can definitely tell the difference between "SIM card in your phone" and "SIM card in your laptop/netbook/whatever".
Since I've been using a smartphone on a non-smartphone plan for months, it seems they don't care. I know people who have done this for over a year with no problems. I guess I'm wondering if laptops are where they draw the line for caring, and if anyone has had adverse action from them.
I can't wait for this to come out, but i think i will get the Acer 1820pt which has the Intel Core 2 Duo, check it out on their website. Has anyone used a Acer touch screen before, how are they?
Any further information on when this, or any others in it's class, are going to be available? I am in the market for a new designed-for-Windows 7, small form factor, convertible Tablet PC. My latest is aging and I need a new one by mid-December. This one looks like about the right size/specs.
