iGOG VelAUcity brings velocity-sensitive drums to your humble iPhone
Mom / wife / building superintendent still won't let you get a drum set, huh? Well, you can show them, you can show them all with the new iGOG VelAUcity app, which for a mere $5 lets you do velocity-sensitive drumming on the iPhone. It works pretty great, too... to an extent. The technology appears to be based on the iPhone's built-in mic (VelAUcity doesn't work on an iPod touch), and the app recommends you use it with headphones, but not a headset with its own built-in mic, which would gum things up. In practice the drumming is really great, with multiple hit points on the drum pads and pretty good velocity sensitivity (for an iPhone app), but there are plenty of mic-introduced foibles like the potential for feedback or stray noises messing things up -- you basically would have trouble using this in a live application, though there are plenty of sliders so you can tweak things and give it a shot. Our favorite part perhaps is the mic trigger mode, which lets you do your fake drumming next to the iPhone, adding a whole new level of fake realness. Our least favorite part was the crashiness and the buginess -- part of which might've be blamed on our speed-strapped 3G. Don't say we didn't warn you. Video demonstrations are after the break.

Im not gonna lie, thats pretty cool! To bad the mic function wont work for us 1g touch owners
lol I Agree. This app looks pretty cool.
that is definitely one of the coolest applications I have ever seen ( not just for the iphone ). Nice used of the available hardware.
Can I get an app for this.. you know, for my white iphone?
If only my iPod touch hadn't bricked the other day. :(
...this would have worked for you? No, it wouldn't.
joey jordison?
"...adding a whole new level of fake realness."
Epic.
my band was going to buy a new drum kit but now we don't even need a real one anymore!
Yeah totally, what kind of drummer uses more than one tom anyway?
Bu bu but haters told me the iPhone just has fart apps :O could they have lied to us?
Like Oh My Godddddddd! Yeah, we've been over that.

What makes you think...nevermind, you're paranoid.
/facepalm"
and so again, /facepalm.
And to the assholes who keep bringing up the fart apps, and the douches that keep re-hashing the joke, the ship has sailed. Simple as that =/
Wait what? that is kinda eerie :S I say this because I had never seen the post you linked to before.
Oh yes, SOOooo humble...
/sarcasm
pretty kool, but why would they make the ride and high hat buttons bigger than the bass drum... how would you do double bass with that
i like the beats though
In the video it sounds like the high hat changes between open and closed based on where he hits the wide pad. I'm guessing the ride works the same way. On one of the screenshots on their site it also looks like there are different pad layouts, too.
can anyone comfirm this working on their 3g ipod touch cause it says it will on the product description
Yes, it will work on a 3G iPod Touch. But because the iPod doesn't have a microphone, the mic triggering and velocity sensitivity features are disabled.
The reason the pad layouts are different for Hi-hat and Ride, is because it plays different articulations depending on where you put your finger on the rectangular pads. For example, from open to closed Hi-hat (and everything in between)

so pretty much everything that makes this app cool is there any way these could work in the future?
All these features work great in an iPhone, but until Apple puts a microphone into the iPod Touch, we're stuck. In the mean time, though we're going to add external mic support for ipod users in a free update so these features will be available for everyone.

Velocity sensitive? Are you kidding me? Have you ever played with a device that was velocity sensitive? A Korg padKontrol is velocity sensitive, this is NOT velocity sensitive. The velocity on this app depends on where you tap, not how hard you tap.
Well that is something new...'iPhone' and 'humble in the same sentence.
can i get this on my pre...?
.....go!
Actually, this app IS velocity sensitive. It responds exactly like a Korg padKontrol, and any other synth. The harder you hit the pads, the louder the sound. This is due to our patent pending VelAUcity technology. You can read more about this on our web site.
iGOG also has a mode called mic triggering mode, which lets you tap other objects, like tables, etc. to trigger the drums. This technology is something we used from our Drumagog drum replacer plug-in.

No it is not, I am playing with it right now and no matter if I tap lightly or firmly, I get the same sound and I have tried changing the "VelAUcity TRACKING" to various positions with no change. Don't be fooled, if you have had ANY experience with hardware MPCs or drum machines, this app is NOT ANYTHING LIKE THEM!!!!! I would consider it virtual velocity at best. I'll stick with the real deal, not to mention most of the free kits aren't that good.
Yeah it's not velocity sensitive, I can tell from the video. Are you trying to sell your product on Engadget?
I'm the developer of iGOG. It is truly velocity sensitive. However, a couple of things to keep in mind. First, you need to use headphones for it to work well. Second, you can't have a lot of background noise in the room. The reason for this, is because iGOG uses the iPhone's built-in mic to do it's velocity tracking. It works remarkably well when set up right. If you listen to the video closely (the video called "VelAUcity demo"), you'll see what I mean. When I start the video, I tap the snare pad several times in a row with different velocities.
I should also point out that the velAUcity tracking and mic triggering doesn't currently work on iPod Touches, due to the fact that they don't have mics.

It's nice to hear a developer chime in! These guys wrote Drumagog, which is a really great drum replacer plugin. My studio uses it all the time. They use the same sounds in this app as in Drumagog. I've been a Drumagog user for years, and this sounds just like the plugin in my studio rig. The velocity thing works well, but you do need to have a pair of headphones on to use it. I had a lot of trouble installing it at first, and it crashed a few times, but I think that was due to being low on memory. I restarted my phone and it worked. I wush there was a way to get multiple sounds to trigger by hitting my table. Now THAT would be cool!

I'm just trying to help out. I wouldn't have posted anything unless I saw an issue. I'm very active in our forums as well, so if you have any issues at all, or if it doesn't live up to the description, please let me know. I'll be more than glad to help you get it working.

**I do NOT own an iPhone**
Just thought you guys (the engadget staff) should give the wolfram alpha app some attention. Bringing something that powerful to a phone (any phone) is a pretty big deal.
That is freaking awesome. I may have to grab that.
