Sega lighters: smoking will never be cool again

Lighters are more often than not outside the scope of our coverage here at Engadget, and while we don't condone smoking or lighting anything on fire... well, these are just awesome. Banpresto's launched a pre-order of these two beautiful Zippo-style lighters, a Sega Mega Drive and a Sega Saturn which runs through November 6th, with a shipping date sometime in December. Each lighter runs ¥10,500 (around $115). We'll definitely keep our eyes peeled for more of these smokers.

Engadget is way off base here. Not only is smoking still cool, its never not been cool. I smoke just because it makes me look cool.
I think they mean that this is SO cool that the mere act of smoking pales in comparison.
Assuming that drumwiz86 is being sarcastic, I still think it's funny how many people actually START smoking these days, knowing full well what it does to you (and it's usually not the type of folks who support the "big tobacco" companies, politically-speaking. THAT'S the biggest irony, really.)
Maybe I smoke and kill myself slowly because I don't have the courage to do it quickly.

I don't smoke, but I do collect Zippos and the occasionally well made Zippo-esque lighter, and I am all over these.
Still would have loved a Dreamcast and a Master System lighter to complete the set, however. Maybe if these sell well enough . . .

The MegaDrive IS the Genesis.

The trick is to drop Zippo guts into 'em if you can, because the lighters themselves usually suck.

Hmmmmm, at that price, I might make my own from a zippo. Can't be that hard. Make a mould, cold cast it, glue it on, spray the body....
The model number on the Sega Saturn lighter gives it a whole different level of geek cred.
For that price, I'd expect these to look a bit less 'homemade'...

115 dollars can get probably get you several units of the real system at goodwill...

About 5 years ago i was on vacation in Bulgaria (i know, strange place for a vacation, but we went for the cheap booze :P)
Anyway along the street there were stands with fancy toys for tourists and they had hundreds of nice lighters shaped like various things, mostly mobile phones, some even had LEDs and flashed a lot. And they cost almost nothing, so i find it very surprising that anybody would consider buying one of these for $115.
In fact i think these are imported from china where the trader buys them for $1 each and sells them at a crazy profit.
$115 would be a ripoff even if it was a Zippo. My cheap Bic lighter is more reliable than my Zippo (and yes, I keep it filled, yes the flint is in fine condition and yes I trim the wick when necessary).
It probably needs a good cleaning. Although I have come across zippos that for some reason I just can't fix even after cleaning and replacing everything. Maybe a better brand fuel is needed.
I didn't think it was a real zippo either (read above) but I checked this out a little more and they are real zippos. Still 115? I like the plain brushed steel zippos best anyway, they don't get ruined because they are already all scratched up.
It's pretty damn new. I am using some cheap lighter fluid I got at 7 Eleven though. I'll get Zippo brand fluid next time. It's a shame really because the design on it is very cool, but when you and your buddies need to light up you ultimately need functionality not style.
Once again, Sega does what Nintendon't.
These are awesome. It's never a bad idea to have a way to make fire anytime you're stepping out the door. You never know what might happen if you spend any time at all outdoors. And even if you don't smoke cigarettes, I wouldn't be at all ashamed to use this lighter for the legal use of medical marijuana! ;)
