HTC confirms it has Android 2.0 handsets in the works
Of course nobody expects Motorola and Verizon to be the sole benefactors of Android 2.0's Donut-ey goodness in the long run, but in an age of increasing Android ubiquity it seemed odd to see them as the only ones with a more-or-less-confirmed Android 2.0 handset on the way. Well, Sascha Segan over at Gearlog did some digging and while Samsung wouldn't confirm any Android 2.0 work, HTC was forthcoming in saying that it's had Android 2.0 around for a while, and is working on it for future phones. Perhaps the HTC Desire (dubbed Droid Eris) or the Passion will be one of those phones? It would be odd to see Verizon introduce a 2.0 handset from Motorola and only 1.5 or 1.6 handsets from HTC, but we'll just have to see how it all goes down next month -- Motorola sure seems buddy buddy with Google on this one. But if Dell could track down a copy, we don't see how far behind HTC could be on this one.

Fantastic.
Elementary my dear Jean, elementary.
really? why blabber on? that really sums it.
I would hope HTC has Android 2.0 smartphones in the works. That WinMo 6 crap was driving the company into bankruptcy. They couldn't give their WinMo handsets away except to diehard fools who'd use anything that vaguely had a Windows Logo in the Start Menu. HTC had great hardware and the MicroShyte OS. What a waste of effort and money. I hope HTC recovers quickly. Let's hope they're smarter than the few hardcore that were buying their previous devices and BS'ing about how good they were.
Look for WinMo market share to disappear quickly and Android will take every percent that Microsoft loses. This is general concensus throughout the smartphone industry. WinMo 6 sucks, goodbye and good riddance.
Are you serious? HTC is a very profitable company and has grown a huge amount in the past year or two, thanks in part to Windows mobile.
No phone comes close in sexiness+functionality to a HTC Touch Pro 2.
what's up with the donut joke? android 2.0 is ecliar... donut is android 1.6.
attempt at humor fail.
HTC are continuing with WinMo devices and will have both Android and WinPhone in their portfolio. They've already made that very clear, and it would make a lot of sense. At the end of the day, HTC would want to continue giving us choice.
I may be an Android user, but I'm going to hold any pre-judgement I might have on WinPhone v7. MS have a history of randomly pulling jems from nowhere, especially with so much limelight on the forthcoming version and a lot of finger wagging from the CEO.
Darn it.. replied to wrong thread... oh well (see below)
"No phone comes close in sexiness+functionality to a HTC Touch Pro 2."
Hey aren't you the guy who arrainged for Microsoft to sponsor a Family Guy episode only to later realize that FG does NOT do anything politically correct, um, ever?
HTC HD2 With Android 2.0 instead of WinMo 6.5 PLEASE!
The OS is irrelevant since it runs Sense UI.
@ Mark Anderson
Thats not what i heard.
@Mark Anderson
Are you kidding me? That's like saying Google Maps and Google Mail are the same cuz they both come from Google
Bad analogy, Nelagster. You are comparing apples to oranges. Android and WinMo are mobile operating systems, whereas Google Maps and GMail are completely different services that serve completely different purposes.
When you see HTC transitioning to Android, you know WinMo has DIED!
Naw, I hope HTC stays with WM6.5. It's a much better choice.
yeah windows mobile has died.. thats why HTC latest and most powerful device announced HD2 is running windows mobile...
I would say that HTC's Sense UI + their inclusion of a capacitive screen and multitouch on their own added to Winmo 6.5 like on the HD2 at least, has made it very similar to Hero with Android 1.5. and almost no difference between the 2 except for the screen size and cpu.
But Android 2.0 is much better than Winmo 6.5 IMO.
Hopefully HTC will bring out some phones with a Tegra processor also.
Htc stated their lineup would be 50% android 50% windows mobile. So windows is not going anywhere.
It's in the works, it called the HTC Dragon.
You can low rank all you want - it's Sense UI that the buyers will see and Sense UI that they'll equate HTC's products with. OS is irrelevant to most sales if the UI works, is intuitive and pretty.
Absolutely right! Aside from the UI, the OS is irrelevant!
...Except that it has a lot to do with how fast everything runs,
... and what apps you can run on the phone,
... and what you can sync with your home computer, as well as how you sync it,
... and what features are available out of the box,
... and what, beyond the UI, is customizable (and how),
... and what other phones and files your phone is compatible with.
But beyond those insignificant things...completely irrelevant!
"...Except that it has a lot to do with how fast everything runs"
Show me the published differences between WinMo 6.5.1 and Android 2.0 so we can test that please.
"... and what apps you can run on the phone,"
Which will have variants for any OS.
"... and what you can sync with your home computer, as well as how you sync it,"
Which only depends on the software package you use which no-one is going to care about.
"... and what features are available out of the box,"
Which are determined by hardware and software applications again largely OS independent.
"... and what, beyond the UI, is customizable (and how),"
Sure. Lots of people are going to do that. No, really.
... and what other phones and files your phone is compatible with.
"But beyond those insignificant things...completely irrelevant!"
Yup. Glad you agree.
For the people buying a Sense UI phone most aren't going to know or care what OS it runs on. Sorry, but Android or WinMo will make no difference to the average consumer because they're never really going to see it for any length of time.
You'll still be able to upgrade the current phones to 2.0, right? I'm okay then. Also to HTC, WE NEED A G1 REPLACEMENT! Thank you!
Android 2.0, Cortex A8, and Sense UI and you have my wallet HTC.
You still have a wallet? Those are so 19th century.... but it is cool going retro
@tikieko
Show me a money clip that I can hide a condom in and I'll make the switch.
Yeah right. Like you get laid.
@Wii60
Hide the condom in between bills!
Getting laid is so 19th century
I keep a condom in my wallet, its been there for six months unused.
@Lazarpandar: You mistyped 10 years.....
Who would have thought this chubby little green robot would cause such a commotion?
Thank you, thank you Android Schmidt for shaking things up. I can eat al the pastries you produce. (though I would pass the Apple Pie)
How about giving Hero users 1.6 =\
And 2.0 afterward =/
why bother with 1.6 at this point? Just go strait to 2.0 and minimize the wait time.
The koolest thing about 1.6 is probably the updated Android Market imo. I don't really know how updates work, but if we got 2.0 without getting 1.6, would we lose the features of 1.6 like the Market update?
The lack of the new market is actually what's keeping me from getting the Hero.
No you'd have all the new functionality up until the 2.0 update.
The new market adds screenshots, but still lacks a lot of features. It removed the ability to list only new apps that are pay or new apps that are free.
Also, when are we going to get some capability to filter out developers we don't want to see? Or how about some way to see apps that are only recently popular instead of the same popular apps that have been there for a year.
Donuty? I thought 2.0 was supposed to be Eclairish.
I bet my Touch Pro 2, the guy was eating a donut while he was typing. Focus on the article, not in the rich fried dough on the hand bro-man
just waiting for them to get all waffely and pancakey
isnt 1.6 donut? and 2.0 eclair?
Yes, yes they are. Good job! Now have a cookie! ;)
i hope its not malicious...... is it android shaped? :P
No, not cookie. It was called Cupcake.
Zing.
HTC, you better not just be releasing Android 2.0 for future phones. You need to support your existing phones, or I'll never buy another HTC phone again. I understand there comes a point where supporting old hardware is no longer viable, but all of your Android phones are barely a year old, or younger. I would hope that you'll at least get Android 2.0 on there, if nothing else.
The only phone HTC has that might not officially get 2.0 is the Dream/G1. That has very little internal storage which makes it difficult. XDA Developers should get it updated though, as they have Apps2SD.
I hope they have one with a physical keyboard like the G1....
Sorry if this is a really dumb question, but I thought the various versions of the Android OS were simply firmware updates? No? I thought if I bought a Sprint HTC Hero or Samsung Moment, I could simply do an upgrade to 2.0. Someone please educate me! Thank you and good day.
Anyone else tired of that stupid android logo, slow-ass GUI on the phone, and every day there's ten more companies announcing plans for ten more models to run it. It's like Linux fail all over again.
1) Linux > You
2) Andriod Logo > You
3) Slow-ass GUI > You
Yeah, which is why we're sitting here drooling for good hardware. I suppose WinMo with just ARM11 holds you over, with its archaic drawing APIs.
Yeah, I'm confused, too. Will current Android phones running 1.5 and 1.6 (G1, MT3G, Hero) be able to upgrade to 2.0?
It depends. The G1 is kind of iffy given the physical internal memory might not be able to fit it, but it still got 1.6 so it'll probably get it, though it's a question if it will get anything beyond 2.0. MT3G I can say will very likely get it, there is nothing stopping it from getting it and T-Mo has been good on doing the OTA updates so far.
For the Hero, since it runs on Sense UI you have to wait a bit for HTC to update their Sense UI to support 2.0, so it might not get it if HTC is lazy. That is the risk you run for having a custom interface vs vanilla Android.
Thanks, Jake. I assumed that my MT3G's slightly beefier memory would make this possible. FYI, I actually had my name as "Jake" because Engadget's awesome comments system actually allowed me to. Thus, JakeMG. You get license on "Jake." d-_-b
Wait. I think I got it!!!! This just means that HTC is working on a 2.0 version of Sense UI. Maybe? That would make sense. (Pun accidentally intended)
We all know the Droid is shipping with 2.0 but it will be very interesting to see if the HTC Eris ships with 1.5 or 1.6.
The Droid Eris by HTC, will indeed ship with Android 2.0. I have been beta testing the phone for a few weeks, and love it. I like it better then the Droid (Motorola Sholes). Its just a bit smaller, but a much sexier phone.
Gonna copy and paste my post from another site since it's so hard for you guyz to fact check a story on your Iphones.... lol
" Eclair = Android 2.0 / Donut = Android 1.6 / CupCake = Android 1.5 ...
This is what an Eclair looks like.. = http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5nwENZ388XY&feature=player_embedded
Next major release should be the Flan = Android 3.0... Wonder if Churro = Android 2.5, lol "
