Sense UI update for HTC Magic makes the scene in Taiwan
If our ability to guesstimate Chinese website contents based on sketchy machine translation software is correct, it looks like HTC Magic owners in Taiwan are finally getting that Sense UI update they've been teased with since mid-August. Further blurring the lines between the aforementioned handset and the Hero, it is unknown whether or not the update will ever come to carriers besides Chunghwa Telecom, or how long that could even take. One thing we are fairly certain of, however, is that phones "with Google" will probably remain without this update, into perpetuity. Sorry, myTouch! If you're one of the lucky few, hit that read link to get started.

Release the HD2 (Leo) in the US already!
I read on PC World it would be called the HTC Pocahontas... Don't even know why lol
Yeah Taiwan!
Why not ?
Why now what?
I bet this guy's user name is in Chinese characters.
Actually, no. The user name is not in chinese characters.
It's supposed to be ๏̯͡๏
Do you believe in Magic with Sense UI
How the interface speeds her, whenever it starts
And it's magic, if the UI is groovy
It makes you feel happy like an old-time movie
That's pretty neat. "MyTouch" owners in US will sure be "touching" their phone more after this.
It looks like it says that the MyTouch (sadly) won't get this I would love to have Sense, or at least the option to have sense, on my MT3G. :(
I don't think the Taiwanese people care about the Lakers vs. the Hornets. :)
actually, i'm pretty sure the nba is more watched than any other major North American sport over in Taiwan, having a bunch of friends who are Taiwanese
The Asian continent does appreciate basketball.
No one cares about Lakers vs Hornets...
Because that picture is obviously Magic vs Lakers.
I hate to disagree, but ever since Jian-Ming Wang, baseball has been capturing the hearts and minds of the Taiwanese. Of course, I'm not big on sports, so maybe they like basketball even more, and I just wasn't seeing it.
I like the design of the Magic better. If only it had a 3.5mm jack...
There is a special edition coming out (Fender branded) that has the 3.5mm jack on it. Google it. :)
I really wish HTC would clarify which resellers have the redesigned Hero and which have the original design!
You guys really need to change the "HTC Hero- Android Evolved" and "Zune HD-exposed" signs off engadget, they've been there forever. Maybe change on of them to "Motorola Droid-uncovered"?
There is no solid, substantial review done by the hands of Engadget. Therefore, the answer is "We are sorry for the inconvenience but Not Yet. Para español oprima el 5"
is there anyone else with a magic that doesn't want the sense ui 'update'?
i personally don't see the sense in having a call button on the screen when there's a hard button underneath it that does the same thing?!
same goes with the add button - are long press and menu/add not enough options?
i'm quite happy with mine as it is thanks! if i wanted sense i'd install a custom rom from XDA...
So do that and let us, the rest, enjoy this "Aha" moment ... pfft... party pooper...
XDA Roms is 5, 4, 3...
First thing I'm gonna do when I get rid of my iPhone 3G for a Motorola Droid is to stick HTC Sense UI on there so I can show my friends why the iPhone is so 2007. :)
Hmmm, my Hero from Sprint has Sense AND with Google on the outside. What does that mean? I also hear that not all Hero's from Sprint say 'with Google.'
I don't know why Engadget thinks that "with Google" phones are ineligible for Sense UI, but the Hero on Sprint is extremely obvious proof to the contrary.
Granted, I highly doubt that T-Mobile is going to push out a Sense UI update to MyTouch phones (especially since the Taiwan version is different hardware specs so there would be significant porting efforts involved) but it has nothing at all to do with the "with Google" branding.
I have a GSM Hero, and I would like to see it getting updated with at least v1.6 of Android, if not v2.0. I just dislike having a smartphone and not being able to get full OS updates for 1-2 years after the purchase of the phone. I know that it's very difficult for a company to put resources aside for all these phone models, so I wouldn't mind paying $10 every 6 months for a full OS update. But having Hero with Android v1.5 right now is just unacceptable to me, because there are features from the v1.6 that I want. And this is supposed to be a smartphone, not a dumbphone that's not upgradeable. And no, it's not Google's OR the community's job to provide ROMs, I want an official HTC release. With updated versions of the HTC Sense UI too. And I am willing to pay for it a sensible price to get it. If HTC finds that too difficult to do, maybe then they should stop creating a gazillion of models every year. Instead, only offer about 3-5 models maximum, but provide GOOD support for them in terms of HTC-official firmware updates.
That's my personal opinion on the matter as a gadget user.
I have an Hero too (european version) and I can't understand what you're talking about.
Android 1.5 is the latest available , since 1.6 (eclair) is still being developed, once it will be released you will surely be able to update your handset.
I have also a N97 and an HTC TouchHD (my HD2 should arrive nov 1st) and have had iPhone 3GS and Samsung Omnia (i900) but I think Android is by far the best OS, as long as it's paired with SenseUI and as long as all the fabolous free apps on Android market remain free.
Talking of which: in the pics I can see that this version of Android has been slightly changed Improved?), and I wonder if european phones will be given the possibility to update too.
The only thing that the Hero misses to be a perfect smartphone is voice dialing and a sscreen big enough to be used for sat nav while driving; and these are also the reasons why I preordered the HD2 and why I hope that the Sholes will reach the european shores.
Add these couple of things and as far as I am concerned the Hero is just about perfect.

@Plexus
1) Android 1.6 is called Donut and it's already been released and pushed out to most devices running stock Android (both G1 and Magic have had the update for over a month in the US)
2) Android has built-in Voice Dialing, you just hold down the Call button for five seconds and it pops up.
3) I've been using my HTC Magic as my primary satnav device for several months now and the screen is plenty big enough. I'm not sure how big you need it to be, but at least in the US the huge majority of standalone GPS navigation devices have screens roughly the same size as the Magic or Hero.
Sense UI update is it the same as a enclair and so on? I dont want to buy the sprint one then be behind in updates from a normal google branded phone. Is it the same?
Thank you.
I want this on my MyTouch so bad! Please HTC!
You're probably going to have to hack it in order to get it on a T-Mobile MyTouch. It's not up to HTC to port Sense to the MyTouch, it's T-Mobile's call and I really highly doubt that they're going to be down with retraining all their support people for Sense, especially when they've already crafted all their marketing around the stock Android (and their goofy recommended home screen replacement app that I can't remember the name of).
If T-Mobile wants to sell and support a Sense UI phone, they're going to do it in the form of new hardware, not as a software update. Sad, but that's reality.
That's the responsibility of XDA-Developers :P
