DJ Hero now rolling out around the world, around the world
It's been a long haul since it was first announced way back in May, but Activision's DJ Hero is now finally available in North America, and will be making the trip across the pond on October 30th. That includes both the standard $120 version, and the "premium" Renegade Edition, which runs a full $200 and includes an upgraded turntable, a hardshell carrying case that converts to a DJ stand, and a Jay-Z and Eminem two-CD set -- and the game, of course. Anyone have any brief first impressions? Let us know in comments.
Update: Looks like Eminem is doing more than just slapping his name on the Renegade Edition. Check out the video after the break in which he sits down to talk about the game and issues a challenge to none other than DJ Jazzy Jeff.

Title win, product fail.
Title Win, bandigolo comment fail. Pwned.
Oh snap. Faux-DJ Xeydeax in the house.
I was so excited about this game when I first heard of it but now that I've seen the artists and songs, it's "meh".
I was hoping for a soundtrack of mostly trance/techno.
As much as people want this to fail, I highly doubt it will.
Product fail is so on the money, or in Activision's case off the money.
This thing is a turkey with no wings. It's HORRIBLE.
I tried a demo at a local Best Buy. It was such a disjointed experience, to say the least. This game is just not intuitive. It lacks the pick up and play fun of the original Guitar Hero.
Sorry Activision, but this thing blows, see you in the clearance section.
I came in here to say "great headline" but it seems you've not only beaten me to it, but expanded on my sentiments. Thank you, good sir.
Lol, Enimem endorses it... no sale! :P
software=win
turntable=fail -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NIWLHTAcg30
What on the turntable is upgraded? I played with (what I think) is the regular one in store, and the "feel" just isn't there, not to mention the fact that the turntable itself is WAAAY too loose.
My thoughts exactly. It seems like one of those "hey we made the controller on the regular one so shitty, they'll have to upgrade!" $$
Bad joke is bad. Worse product is worse.
how do you play 2 player with this? do you need another giant plastic turntable controller?
Loving the game so far, beats are nice...all in all, its a Hip-Hop version of Rock/Guitar/Band/Heros...
First impressions:
Fun, addicting
Daft Punk's songs are HAAAARD.
This crossfader will be the end of me.
I want to get this game, but I'm not sure which system I should get it for: the 360, or the PS3. Anyone know if there are any differences between the two, like dlc content that's available for one but not the other, like batman or gta4 etc?
... Did I grow up all of a sudden that I don't like this at all, didn't know what daft punk was until i looked it up and thought they sucked... It can't be. great... DJ hero just depressed me.
You don't like Draft Punk? You are a soulless, evil person.
If you don't know who Daft Punk is then you have been living under a rock for 15 years.... and if you think they suck you must just be a geezer.
How dare you curse the name of Daft Punk. Go research Tiesto. He's in concert tonight here in Nashville, got my VIP's! I love DJ Hero, its more my style than anything. Not happy about some of the artists in the game.
If you don't know who Daft Punk is, then you really shouldn't comment on a game like DJ Hero OR perhaps you need to broaden your musical horizons...
Daft Punk is hawt....and saw Tiesto in San Antonio Sunday night!
lame. seriously, gaucho, time to come in from the pampas.
At least he didn't say "Daft Punk sucks, but that "Stronger" song by Kanye West is the most original and creative thing in the world and I love it!"
Jebus... "lowest ranked" man, there are some passionate fans out there. I didn't even say that they generally sucked, it was just an opinion.
Yeah, I've never really been into the whole club scene. I'm into a lot of different kinds of music... techno and all its cousins never really stuck though :/ FOR ME! not criticizing anyones taste in music, I personally don't like it.
Lol, It's just funny when you comment on a DJ game but have no idea about anything to do with the scene.
What happened to Beat Mania?
IIDX is for kids who can conquer DJ Hero. I have a friend who's pretty pro at IIDX and it took him 2 tries before he could dominate the DJ Hero songs on expert.
played it at bestbuy a couple times. Was really fun and would consider buying the regular version.. I just need to see how the multiplayer is done. these games are fun for me and my friends if the multiplayer aspect is good.
DJ Hero now rolling out around the world, around the world
^^
I saw what you did there ;)
I've been playing the game since Friday and it's pretty awesome! The fader control is a little annoying b/c it doesn't return to center as easily as I'd like but overall the hardware and game is AWESOME! I'm working on getting the 150+ stars to unlock the rest of Daft Punk.
Played at Best buy, a lot more fun than I thought.
I know a lot of people are knocking the game, but I think thats because they aren't into hip hop/dance/techno.
I enjoyed guitar hero even though I never listened to a day of rock n roll in my life.
i played there as well, i thought it was awesome. but it made my forearm hurt after 3 songs lol
i think people hate it because it is about 40$ overpriced. thats why im not liking it right now.
I disagree a bit with your assumption Jermaine. I like Daft Punk as much as the next guy but that's not why I don't like the game. I like the idea, the premise seems fun but the design of the turntable needs work and the music they decided to mix it with is questionable.
Give me Paid In Full and other real DJ classics. Terminator X!
Gorillaz, The Jackson, Daft Punk are great but Tears for Fears? Marvin Gaye? VANILLA ICE!?!?!??!
Great music (excluding Vanilla Ice of course) but not for mixing. I know the idea behind it is mash-ups but that is not as easily done as people think. Just making it go to the same rhythm doesn't make it sound GOOD and THAT should be the key. Hollaback girl?????
@HekTikLyfe, I completely agree, just making it go to the same rhythm doesn't make it sound good.
A big key to mash-ups that any mash-up DJ will tell you is... Key. If two songs don't match in key, then they sound sucky together. One example is PartyBen's mash-up of "Another one Bites the Dust" and "Around the World" (you can find info at partyben.com) which the makers of DJ hero tried to emulate but failed to get in key.
HekTik, the whole point of Marvin Gaye etc is so you can mix up songs you'd never think go together, and it works! I like the fact they're trying to appeal to a larger demographic by bringing in songs a broader range of generations will recognise :)
I thinks a great game with cool mixes. The cross fader is rediculously sensitive and makes it harder than necessary. But I bought it today after playin it in-store a few times. I was happy enough to buy it. No it isn't a professional mixing set, but it's a game.
This game is sooo addicting.. I played for almost an hour at Best Buy this past weekend and I plan on buying it tonight.. The only I didnt like is "Holla Back Girl" by Gwen Stefani.. that song is garbage.. +1 if you agree.
How about -1 just because you ask... It is quality not quantity.
One of the less fun music/rhythm games that I've played. It has its moments, but it's not really doing it for me. I'd pick it up for 80 bucks tops, with the hopes that it gets more fun, but meh. At least some of the music is really good.
The cross fader feels too loose. It is extremely difficult to not go all the way to the left or right and there is NO reason to allow the turn table to spin freely. Your fingers are SUPPOSED to stay on the buttons. If they locked it in to a 45 degree radius or less and added some resistance it would be fine. Even if you could lock it in to go only in one direction or another that may work. The way you would normally stop a record from spinning is by pressing your fingers to the vinyl as it slides. You can't do that here since your fingers should never move so I don't see any point to that.
The angle made my wrist hurt after a short while. Definitely carpel tunnel potential though that is true with any music game. My finger muscles used to hurt in Guitar Hero but this is wrist bone...a little different.
Some of the music is gaudy but I guess that's inevitable. I don't expect much from the online store since the Guitar Hero franchise hasn't done much in that aspect either. These mash-ups complicate things even further with both licensing and pricing.
If Harmonix, the creators of the original Guitar Hero and Rock Band games try their hand at this, I may give it a second look. For now...I'm not paying $120 for this. If I had money to burn this would be a cool thing to break out during a small party for a short while.
The free motion on the controller is so you can spin the table (if you gotz skiillz) or play lefty, not hard to get used too I find putting a free finger on the "record" (thumb on the side of the record works good) itself helps stabilize scratching and you can still lift your button finger without loosing control or track of the buttons.
I have vids of my friend playing expert (tester), expect some cool YouTube in the near future.
zomg, I stand corrected, the freespinning also has a gameplay feature, at points you can "rewind" the song by spinning the record backwards at key spots. check out this dude..

I had thought that was a possibility but I wasn't sure and my post was already too lengthy.
That is pretty cool but I wouldn't want to have to play it that much just to enjoy it to the fullest you know what I mean? I would have enjoyed some resistance so I could get some kind of tactile feedback when scratching. On actual turntables you get SOME resistance when you press down on the table. This feels very slick.
I don't know. I guess I should go try it some more if it isn't broken already. :S
played the demo at my BBY, it's a fun concept, the game looks great, I think scratching the turntable takes a little getting used too. It didn't help that the demo was terribly uncalibrated, but the gameplay was interesting enough to warrant possibly asking for it as a xmas gift. :)
I'm with HekTikLyfe,
Let's see some old school DJ's. The real Heroes.
Terminator X, Rakim, Hurricane, etc.
True scratching at its best. WORD
