"As someone who doesn't reside in the USA, I was wondering what would be the best way to get internet for my computer in the US for a couple of weeks? If it were Europe I know I'd look for some prepaid data. Is there anything similar offered by American carriers? A MiFi or a data SIM that I can tether from would work, but I'm trying to maintain a tight budget. Help!"
My only - read, only - real issue with WinMo at this point is what I perceive to be piss-poor battery management. Maybe I'm being too harsh. I've never owned an iPhone or Pre, but compared to my BB my HTC Diamond (Sprint) has the stamina of fat kid at a free skate. I assume that WinMo has something to do with it... or maybe it's just the hardware/firmware. In any event, I'd seriously consider another WinMo phone (like this) if there is some improvement on that front to justify the cost. I'm tired of holding out for Android to "get there."
Q: won't many WinMo components (especially Office) be horrendous to work without a stylus?
The answer is no to your first question. WinMo does not equate terrible battery life, however the HTC Diamond does equate terrible battery life, as they sacrificed for style and skimped on a larger battery for that device. The Diamond 2, ATT Pure, Touch Pro 2, all have much larger batteries, on the order of 33%t nearly 50% larger.
In response to your second question about Office, the answer is sort of the same... The icons are not overtly touch friendly, but on a screen of 3.2 inches they do the job, and WM6.5 has a re-skinned menu system that's completely touch friendly. So again, on a last generation device with a tiny 2.8in screen, it is not touch friendly, but larger screened devices fare better, especially when they have WM6.5.
I think it has to do with the older gen Qualcomm chipset. In everyday use, I've found Android devices are worse than their WinMo counterparts (HTC Diamond with some websurfing, background email, twitter compared to the same on the Hero).
I'm not 100% sure, but I think Snapdragon is supposed to be much more efficient than the MSM7xxx chipset, so both Android and WinMo devices should see better life.
As for the Pre, it's not bad (closer to WinMo than Android), but it also depends on some app management. If you have a few cloud based apps running in the background, it can drain pretty quickly.
