Nokia N97 firmware 2.0 hits the tubes, is ready for your attention
Got an N97? Yeah? Reckoned that Nokia has forgotten about your loyalty and moved all of its focus onto the N900? Fret not, dearest early adopter -- the engineers in Espoo are making good on a promise to clear out lots of bugs in the aforesaid handset with firmware 2.0, and if we're seeing this right, it's available now to download all over the world. We know, you 5800 owners are clamoring for the same type of TLC, but for now it looks like the pricier sibling is getting its due. Hit the read link and get your download going, and make sure to report back on your kinetic scrolling experience, cool?

kinetic scrolling!
Nokia may not have forgotten about the N97.... but I definately have. N900 FTW!!!
Uh. yeah. Nokia.
No one has one dude. Its not 2003.
Does the new version require one to wear so many bracelets?
Yes.
No
Maybe
possibly
It depends
Surprisingly, her wrist is less cluttered than S60 5th edition
Does this new version require the user to wear that many bracelets?
No.
Yes
Maybe
If you read the white paper, the N900 has the ability to harness the power of the heart (Ma-ti).
The bracelets are actually guiding rings so that the heart flux does not leak away.
So, yes.
Surprisingly, her wrist is less cluttered than S60 5th edition
Atleast her wrist does not have wild tatoos. ;)
I don't really have a N97, but all I can say is that it shows responsibility from Nokia to address the issues if an expensive handset. As you can see the N900 has not made them forget about the rest of their line. The NXX would continue to be pampered by them. Yes their phones are not perfect, but neither are Apple's or MS software. So loosen up and don't hate on our Finland friend.
It's "Finnish".
Typo Nazi away!
Nokia is not only Finnish. It's also "Finnished." How's that for love. Down with the big bullies of the cellphone industry that prey on the weaker rivals by taking their "lunch money." Boo. Hiss.
Where is my 5800 update that I've been waiting for?
Err... we're actually on Firmware v31. There have been two major updates.
As for kinetic scrolling: forget it - there's no way they'll cannibalise X6 sales by doing that.
I think we 5800 users will also get Kinetic scrolling eventually, hopefully by the end of this year.
Installed. Kinetic scrolling. Same free memory. No new widgets. No Skype. Vlingo - big deal. This is what we waited months for? Seems more like it should have been called V1.3 than V2.0. Very disappointed :(
Hence, why I will be selling my N97 and just keeping my iPhone 3GS 32GB & AT&T Tilt 2 (Touch Pro 2). I can't believe I spent that amount of money on a N97 for crap... I'm thinking Nokia should give me a free N900 trade in :)
@Dan
You never had an N97, you stupid bitchass, muda-4cking, crapple fanboy.....
agreed. ive used my friends N97 and i couldnt believe how pathetic it was. i definitely prefer the old nokias that were damned good. the N97 is in no WAY a flagship device for them...its not even that great. the worst part? my friend thinks its such a "nice and awesome" phone because of all its features. give me a break. i would rather use any windows mobile phone than the N97.

Fring does skype and bit more.
secretanchitman > none of WinMo/Android/Apple devices combine all these features today :
- a good camera (N97 5mpx ones is way better than most 8mpx on the market these days)
- a good sound when you plug some good earphones/stereo on it (i'm a musician and it's that important to me, for exemple i'd never by an iPhone just because of that !! www.highhopestheband.com/single1.html )
- a decent web browser
- complete smartphone functionnalities
I'll buy an HTC HD2 next month because of the web abilities (that screen is just insane !!!), but i'm sad i'll have a worse camera than the one on my good old N95...
I do agree with the 1.3V
But I still
V2.0 was meant to include kinetic scrolling only. They never promised other features.
Kinetic scrolling is a major update and hence v2.0 from v1.x.
do a hard reset, and vlingo will show up.
Absolutely
Anyone else having issues upgrading over the air? I keep getting "Connection Error".
It tells me there's no update available.
you have to plug it to your computer and it will find the update... its a firmware update... that is the only way I know you can do them
Say no to Symbian. Yes to Maemo!
update is not worldwide
Yes it is... Plug your phone to the computer and use Nokia Software Update thats on your PC Suite
no it isn't. updates are rolled out according to product codes
I have been a long time fan of Nokia. Since the day I got my first cell phone, I've always used Nokia. As of now, with the N97, I have been left disappointed. My N82 is far better than the N97. The N97 does have its plus sides, and I have enjoyed it. Like all brand new phones, I understand that there will always be a few quirks. With this new firmware, I hope my experience with the N97 will improve. I don't understand why Nokia has been taking so long for firmware updates. They are pushing long term loyal customers to the edge. I've heard many of them willing to move to Apples Iphone, HTC and so on. They really need to get the ball moving if they want to keep their customers who are willing to pay so much for a phone.
The only thing that's missing is the violin music in the background.
Yep, no update for me on Voadfone in the UK yet.
"suing companies that are making a bit of money"
yeah right, poor apple .....
Plug your phone to the computer and use PC Suite and Software Update.
Nokia should just quit the smartphone business and go into the business of suing companies that are making a bit of money from the smartphone business. I guess they can enjoy their position as the 800 lb. gorilla of the cellphone industry to take money from smaller companies with lesser market share. I'm sure it would be more profitable in the long run and they could save a lot of the wasted money they're using for R&D.
Nokia is great, i wish i bought a Nokia N97 instead of a Samsung Omnia HD back in july. Nokia always supports their high end phones with firmware updates for a long time, but Samsung just ignores any problems users might be having and focuses on new phones.
But even more than that i wish i waited until december-ish with my new phone purchase and got a N900.
Go to http://forums.samsungi8910omnia.com/ and install the latest (custom) firmware to get kinetic scrolling (at least in the browser), 3D-Taskmanager and more..
I'm registered there, i now have HyperX 1.5 installed and it's a lot better than the standard firmware, but with Nokia i never had to do anything similar, my local FW was always up to date and available on the official FW updater. Samsung on the other hand releases an italian FW with some fixes, next month a chinese FW with some completely different fixes (but also new bugs) and doesn't bother updating the local firmwares for other countries, ever.
