Nokia N97 firmware 2.0 hits the tubes, is ready for your attention
Got an N97? Yeah? Reckoned that Nokia has forgotten about your loyalty and moved all of its focus onto the N900? Fret not, dearest early adopter -- the engineers in Espoo are making good on a promise to clear out lots of bugs in the aforesaid handset with firmware 2.0, and if we're seeing this right, it's available now to download all over the world. We know, you 5800 owners are clamoring for the same type of TLC, but for now it looks like the pricier sibling is getting its due. Hit the read link and get your download going, and make sure to report back on your kinetic scrolling experience, cool?

you guys have to plug in the phone to your computer to do the update. Us Nokia Software Updater
No update for me yet either, bought mine unlocked from the Nokia store London
Plug it into your Computer.
Go to Nokia PC Suite
Click on Sofware Updates
And it will find a update
My phone is also a Unlock phone.
tried that, many times. definitely not available for UK users. it says im already up to date (version - 12.0.026)
put your phone in a box
bring it to the post office
mail it to me in new jersey
and (forget about it)
I have a Nokia 97N, where can I find the update software?

First you must make sure you have the LATEST PC Suite
Then plug your phone to the computer,
Load PC Suite
Choice Software Update
And you should see a update happen
The music player shortcut sucks now with the 2.0 firmware. When you're listening to a song and you push the back button it takes you back to the home screen instead of back to the list of songs you were on.
Really? I just tried Music Player again just now, and it brought me back to my list of songs when I hit Back. This is through the Artists section, Albums section, Playlists section, All Songs section, and the Podcasts section. Wonder what's going on with your phone....
ive got the latest PC suite, it doesnt let you even check for an update unless you do.
there is no 2.0 for UK yet
Here we are my second software upgrade since I bought this phone and yes it continues to crash, now my Wifi, no longer works. Thanks Nokia, the crashing continues.
When are we going to get Ovi Suite for Mac? When are we going to get iSync to support N97? They still sell the N97 without even the first firmware upgrade, which means they don't work at all - and you need to have a PC to get your phone working. Or leave it to in the nads of Nokia Care for about a week... (this in Finland)
I'm afraid the same will happen with N900, they ship an unfinished product that I can't bring up to speed myself.
C'mon, get on with it, not ALL Mac-users want iPhones...
nads = hands
Updating the firmware has been a nightmare for me. Beginning to regret getting this phone. Constantly saying that the phone is not connected, restarting the operating system twice, so far... Why can't the update be completely downloaded as a file and then updated from the computer rather than requiring an internet connection?
I'm really happy with the new firmware update. The movement interface is a complete overhaul, instead of just kinetic scrolling in some parts of the OS. Now, all parts of the OS, including within 3rd party applications, use this new kinetic scrolling. Therefore, I totally think that the move from 1.2 too 2.0 is totally justified.
Welcome fixes that I have noticed in this update from 1.2:
1) In the messaging app, if one of your folders or mailboxes have "no messages" displayed and you click on the black space where the message list is usually displayed, it won't crash the messaging app. Hooray!
2) If you're like me and prefer Nokia's predictive text using alphanumeric input, then the text entry has 2 bugs fixed: A) When you type in a new word that's not in the dictionary, and you click on Spell to add the new word into the dictionary and return to the text entry, version 1.0 through 1.2 will return with the mangled word and the properly spelled word next to each other. 2.0 fixes that. B) Predictive punctuation when used at the end of a predictive word in alphanumeric predictive mode seems to be fixed now. In the past, sometimes when you choose a word that has multiple outcomes and you select the none-first predicted word followed by a punctuation, the predictive text mechanism will revert the word to the first predicted word. I don't know if this is truly fixed, as this bug comes and goes in 1.0 through 1.2. For example, 4663 is a combination for "home", "good", "gone", etc. In the past, you wanted to type "good?" So you type in 4663 (which brings up home), type in # (to go to "good"), then 1 (to bring up the punctuation), and then # again (to cycle the punctuation to "?"). It's that last # action that will revert the "good" back to "home" along with the cycled punctuation. This second problem with predictive text appears to have been fixed. C) Predictive punctuation is now truly predictive! In the past, the period may be the first thing when you hit 1 button, but sometimes it's the 2nd or 4th cycle!
3) Exiting out of the music player app while a song is playing doesn't stop the music and exit the app. I know, it sounds like it should be doing that, but for as long as I have owned the N91 and N95, exiting the music app with music playing never killed the app and the song kept on playing in the background. Versions 1.0 through 1.2 is a break from tradition, and version 2.0 now brings it back.
4) The Facebook widget for the Home screen (if set) now really works. So far. (Sadly, the AccuWeather widget is still spotty.)
As far as enhancements go, besides the kinetic scrolling, these are all welcome updates:
1) Dial pad now has alphabets associated with each numeric button. This is huge, especially in North America, where numbers are often displayed with corresponding alphabets in adverts or what-not.
2) Clicking the profile button in the Home screen now adds a new option at the very top: "Edit active profile". Previously you can only select profiles, but you can't customize any profile without first going to Menu > Settings > Profiles.
3) Haptic feedback is more accurate in time. Previously, sometimes button pushing or toggling the lock switch to the left will cause the N97 to vibrate about 0.25 to 0.5 seconds later, and sometimes not at all. It was so laggy that I simply turned off the haptic feedback. Now with version 2, it seems to be more timely.
4) When turning on "Theme effects" (Go to Menu > Settings > Themes > General, select Options > Theme effects > On), the effects are smoother, as opposed to being choppy. I assume this is due to better memory usage, not an enhancement of the theme effects.
Sadly, a lot of my other desired enhancements are still missing. And in the 7 hours I've played with it, I've only discovered the introduction of one new bug! When using the browser and after going to multiple pages or sites, pull up the menu bar at the bottom, and click "Back". This will bring up the entire web page in zoomed out mode for each page/site you have visited, and you can scroll through them to select where you want to land. When you hit the left or right button, or swipe left or right, look at the web page title on the top. Now it flickers! This never happened on version 1.2. Not a serous bug, but an annoying bug nonetheless.
Overall, I'm very happy with this new firmware. I'd like more some other enhancements though... =)
