Samsung Omnia II gets broken down, screenshot by screenshot
The overwhelming mediocrity of Windows Mobile 6.5 gives us pause before saying something sensational like "it's a great time to be a WinMo fan," but we've got to admit, manufacturers are really stepping up their game to deliver these days -- one need look no further than the mighty HD2 to see that. The Omnia II's looking pretty solid, too, especially if you like your phones served up keyboard-free, and ai.rs blog has compiled a comprehensive screenshot gallery showing just how deep the TouchWiz integration really goes. Build quality is said to be top-notch, and it's pretty hard to argue with a 3.7-inch WVGA AMOLED display -- so as we go into 2010, it looks like we might be gearing up for an epic TouchFLO / TouchWiz showdown in the WinMo octagon. Who doesn't like a good fight?

Awww snap!
Is that a PS controller on the cube.....?
Definitely not, no joysticks. It's a super generic gaming controller probably meant to denote a super generic gaming section on the phone. Although, it's not hard to see the resemblance.
it's a Super Famicom Pro controller
Love and Peace!
Looks... cheap
Hey thanks Verizon for bringing Omnia II to us in such a timely fashion.
Hey! What's up Rodney King?
I was looking forward to this phone as I currently have an Omnia from Verizon, but what I am seeing isn't making me feel like trading it for this one on my new every two plan. I've installed custom ROM's on my phone with Windows Mobile 6.5 and am not really impressed so far with it. I was hoping the Omnia II would be better and the Samsung UI would impress me. I think that 6.5 is much better than the 6.1 that came on my phone. 6.1 was absolutely horrible on a touch screen only phone without a stylus. But now all I am thinking about is a new Android phone.
The Android hype machine is in absolute full swing and they're on a roll so you're not the only one thinking about getting a new Android phone.
Right now, if this market trend keeps up and MS don't deliver the goods in the smartphone space and make some progress then they will truly be dead. They're already dead in "mindshare" which is so critically important these days and I don't see how they can change this unless they succeed with their 'Windows Phone' branding initiative.
The next 12 months will be very telling, at least for MS.
Where's the f'n 16GB version Samgsung‽ The HD2 will beat you to the punch (Large capacitive screen vs. on-board storage). But none of you new your arses from your elbows when I've made multiple enquiries, so your loss.
Looks sort-of weird. Good concept just not that great looking.

Can someone please tell me why anybody would want a Winodows Mobile Phone that isnt from HTC?
I mean, come on, WinMo is crap. The only thing that keeps them alive is HTC with their amazing phones and UI.
From the article:
"Now we have a final build of the software and it looks like Samsung has tried to cover Microsoft flaws as much as possible with it's TouchWiz interface."
Why do manufacturers insist on using Windows Mobile and covering it up? Why don't they just save the effort and use Android?
You can also say the same thing about Android. The bare UI was very ordinary. Hence HTC comes in and rescue it with is Sense UI and that makes all the difference.
6.5 isn't bad.
Also all those Winmo programs.
If it's a good fight, then what's the problem?
I would get sick of that cube.
Who cares about home screen fight? Home screen is nothing but application
launcher. It does nothing to the underlying OS UI that applications rely on.
Let's not confuse home screen/wall paper with the OS UI.
I don't like this as much as HTC TouchFlo, or SPB Mobile Shell, but still, compared to stock WinMo 6.5 it knocks it out of the park. Why is it so easy for everyone (HTC, Samsung, even a tiny company like SPB) to make an interface that absolutely kills what Microsoft is capable of producing?
What ever happened to the Omnia HD (i8910)?
yeah exactly, i was really looking forward to that phone but alas, it stays overseas.
Well, too bad this isn't the Omnia II Verizon will be getting, it's the only that's been out for a while now Internationally (i8000=GSM, non-US, SCH-i920=CDMA Verizon's version).
really, samsung? resistive touchscreen? really?
Nice looking phones, but Windows Mobile is dead to me.
"i" really couldn't care less.
Wow so slow and un responsive
I noticed that too, but I don't know if the person making the video wasn't pushing hard enough on the screen. Also is it me or was he "double-clicking" at times?
What I dislike most about my iphone is that it doesn't have a customizable home screen. I want photos and widgets and colors too! .
Unfortunately the Samsung TouchWiz homepage is very slow (poorly optimized code?), but everything else looks snappy. I have the original Omnia and I really like it (running a custom ROM), but I basically had to customize it myself to get it working the way I want. The Omnia II is better in every way than the Omnia, so I'm really looking forward to its release (although Verizon is taking FOREVER to get it out). Throw a custom ROM on there, disable the widget homepage in favor of SPB mobile shell and this phone will rock!
Say farewell to WinMo. It's yesterday's smartphone OS. Android is it's replacement.
But can it docked ??
