Shape-shifting 'Breathing Chair' looks to make the beanbag fashionable
Shape-shifting chairs may not always be the most attractive additions to your living room, but Taiwanese designer Yu-Ying Wu is hoping to change that with her so-called "Breathing Chair," which has already won a few prestigious design awards but hasn't yet snagged any commercial partners. The secret, such as it is, is the array of "professionally calculated" holes spaced out through the three layers of foam plastic, which are designed to compress into the shape of an armchair when someone sits in it and spring back into a cube when they stand up. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any video of it in action, but the chair will soon be on display at Red Dot Design Museum in Singapore if you happen to be in the area.
Update: Thanks to commenter Deny for digging up a video of the chair. Check it out after the break.

No way with kids in the house.
Anything older than five will be clever enough to turn the cube-chair around when daddy's not looking. And film it.
YouTube will be littered with video's of me trying to sit on the wrong end of this thing with a cup of coffee in my hand.
This is great for those of us who enjoy farting. No longer will we have to lift up our asses to let the gas dissipate.
Sponge Bob Nooooooo!!!
Imagine the dust. Failed.
Does it come with its own squid-like drones too, or are those extra? You never know when Anubis might attack...
oops where's the phone gone?
She is a robot.
"Breathing Chair," which has already won a few prestigious design awards but hasn't yet snagged any commercial partners." If she really wants to market this chair, she just has to change the name and materials. It would improve if she makes it from recycle materials derived to make the foam. In which case even Wholes food would endorse her chair. :P
at about 1:08 you can see the chair inside that foam cover ...
ching cong king kong il should come in colors chang ghun.
It looks like it's just a regular arm chair covered in foam mesh.
And who really wants a giant block of foam sitting in their living room?
She can sit on my lap instead for a nice comfortable fit. Ahhh, that felt good.
Does it go into my washer dryer? Imagine what a Dust Catcher that is unless covered in some clear polyester film.
After a year of ownership, I could imagine it being so brown and stinky at sections with foam ripping at the edges. Hobo's dream sofa.
What chair..... Really makers mind is tremendous. its other look like cheez....I love this chair...
This is about a chair? sorry I was distracted by the scrolling text, spinning graphics and stock market updates. Ive never seen so much screen real estate used up in a news broadcast
Haha! Actually that doesn't apply to just news broadcasts, a lot of game shows and other things constantly have things scrolling around everywhere. Not just in Taiwan either, you'll find them in places like China and i think also Japan. I think it's because they can with all out one block sized characters, unlike English where you have to use multi-block sized words.
BTW If my Chinese listening skills serve me right i believe they call it the "Tofu Chair", and yes as in the tofu that you eat.
Very creative product. I wonder how much it cost.
