Motorola DROID spotted in fine GSM form (video)

While the newly launched DROID is keeping us plenty busy, we'd be remiss if we didn't hep you to this hands-on video that's recently popped up on the YouTubes. Of Vietnamese origin, we do believe that this is the first GSM version of the phone we've caught on tape. All seems to be going well until about 2 minutes 7 seconds, when the viewer encounters a considerable lag in between gesturing to open the app drawer and the event itself. But don't take our word for it -- see for yourself after the break.

It is Droid madness today haha!
Yes, now dance with us:
'Cause this is thriller, thriller Droid
And no one's gonna save the iPhone from the strike
You know it's thriller, thriller Android
Apple will be fighting for its life inside a killer, thriller Droid

You're on. With the number of people who will support open source, I doubt it's going to die that easily. Between people who appreciate open source, and people who are starting to look at open source as "trendy" (remember when Apple's little white iPod started to become "trendy"?) I imagine this thing will sell pretty well...
PayPal is accepted.
I'll take that bet. This thing will do WAY better than the Storm.
Cool $30 data plan on AT&T ,, would it work in north Hollywood bands n all?
And what might N. Hollywood bands be? 90210mhz?
@all things ROFL
I'll give you $10 if YOU go the way of the Storm...
He just turned the phone on. It's not done doing all its startup stuff yet.
Exactly, the app drawer was used when it was still starting up the machine. In that case, you could also say that it did not change orientation while the phone was tilted when the eye was there. Cut some slack on the hate Mr. Flatley...
FYI... You may think that it is just one line among 5 or so in the article, but that was the only opinion you had for this video/product?
...sigh & facepalm
This one has some silver instead of gold touch for the CDMA version.
Prefer this one.
because it has android idont think it will!
I think the reason this phone is so amazing is not because it has all+ features of the iPhone, its because its on a competent network...
It's great that Motorola is diversifying though.
You are absolutely right. I have yet to meet someone that complains about dropped calls on Verizon.
From what I seen...it seems more of a mistake on his part (i.e. not properly touching the scree) than a "lag"
But then again, I might have been seeing things. Sorry.
Ok now i am interested
and the Storm has a Blackberry OS and no android how can you compare the two
wow LOL
@ Napsterking
iSee what you did there!
I doubt this does as poorly as the Storm, but I doubt it will be a raging success like the iPhone or be an "iKiller". Android 2.0 looks great but considering the mild success of the G1, and Hero, I remain skeptical.
Hey, did anyone see which way the Storm went?
Hope I don't get downranked for being honest.
But so far I'm not impressed. Am I alone here.
Yes. 3 .... 2.....1 You are going Ghost!
I agree with you, it's unresponsive and looks laggy. not impressed at all. people in here are delusional.
so, what will be its name, since "Droid" seems to be the name of the Verizon Android phone series?
Choles
Hmmm...wouldnt call it exactly responsive....needs a bit of work still IMHO
the lag was right at startup ...i have noticed that it takes a few seconds after start up for everything to smooth out and the response seemed to be fine after that for sure
please let this hit tmobile ....(some how i don't think we are gonna see this on a US carrier)
After the Project Dark letdown... T-Mobile does not even deserve RAZR's.....
Who really cares if it is lag? You have a computer that used to occupy a good amount of your desktop in the palm of your hand. Man people are picky and unappreciative!
'Cause this is thriller, thriller Droid
And no one's gonna save the iPhone from the strike
You know it's thriller, thriller Android
Apple will be fighting for its life inside a killer, thriller Droid

I don't know what the difference between the GSM and CDMA version is, but the Verizon version sure as hell didn't seem to have the lag this one does.
The GSM version is powered by nano-mice running on nano-wheels on the inside, and sometimes they get tired. Android running on a nice looking CDMA version? Oh, that's magic.
looks very laggy to me. I'd probably buy it as a backup to my sg3. responsivness is key.
Lag on OS... *shrugs* ....typical Motorola issue...
Anyone else thinking the slide to answer thing when hes calling the phone is a bit quirky? I always liked a straight button press.
Works the same way on the iPhone (slide to answer), it's so you don't accidentally answer a call you don't want to answer.
Where is the 6th finger??
I thought it would be less laggy... but looks good.
Anyone know if its a plastic screen? Hope not, scratches suck, and screen films are a pain in the ass.
Also, the touch response looks pretty sucky...
I suspect it will do ok, but no record breaker. The thing seems to lag quite a bit in this video. Typical response from companies getting soaked by the iPhone. Pushing out products long before they have all the issues worked out like with the Storm.
Hopefully this is not the production release phone. If it is well, I'd wait for version 2 then.
I'm excited about Android, but will wait a while until it's actually ready for prime time.
If you'd take the time to check on your claims, you'd see they're not at all rectified. It is a tad laggy yes, but only after a full (re)boot, and only for a minute or two. After that it's silky smooth (it is for my old ARM11 528mhz Android device anyway, so imagine a Cortex A8, it'll beat butter in smoothness). This device will be killer, what with it's unified inbox, multiple exchange/google accounts, free navigation (!), facebook integration and support for adding more types of sync (developers can add virtually any service they like to the sync-thingy and it'll all blend in magically).
I don't personally think this phone is going to be that successful, but I think it will be more successful than the Storm.
sixth finger or it didn't happen
OMGJizzInPants!!
Please give us a release date for europe !
K, considering that my previous comment had more to do with the title than the post (I just finished watching the video), I'd have to say it seems like a more laggy build, maybe a beta (at least, I hope it is, and RTM is as good a product as the CDMA version). Anyways, here's the FCC snippet off of MobileCrunch:
This equipment is a GSM portable transceiver, which operates in the 850, 900,1800 and 1900 MHz PCS band. It also operates in WCDMA 900 and 2100 MHz and contains GPRS Class 12 and a 2.4 GHz Bluetooth function (Part 15.247). The unit may also be connected to a computer via a USB connection (Part 15 Class B Computing Device Peripheral).
I'm a 3G user, but information seems a bit all over the place. Can anyone clarify if ANY North American carriers carry those 3G bands? Thanks. [P.S. I'm on Rogers]

And also, it looks laggy as hell to me.
I believe this phone will do better than most of you think, it will not surpass the iphone in any way shape or form, but in the near future the android devices will rule the world. Open source will eventually surpass any one set team. See the apple designers are a team, open source is the entire world, do you think the entire world can assemble a better team than apple alone? You tell me.
@ iJames White
Wow, you really are an idiot who knows nothing about cell phones. You couldn't be dumber.
To begin with, Droid has a 550MHz OMAP3 which contains a Cortex A8 core. Now go a read what that means before continuing.
Droid Doesn't have 100,000+ Apps
the point here? and how many apps have you downloaded?
Droid Doesn't have 45+ million user
and neither does the iPHONE (iTOUCH does not count)
Droid Doesn't have a fast processor
same core idiot, but Droid has better co-processors so it is faster.
Droid Doesn't have a solid Build
Droid is made with Metal. Pop quiz genius, what is strong metal or plastic?
Droid Doesn't know how to be original(cough, iPhone copy)
Original, you mean being a touchscreen (iPhone) like the Motorola Ming?
Droid Doesn't have a File Manager
Idiot. It has more ability to customize and change, benefit of openness. Apple should try it.
Droid Doesn't have over 16GB of internal memory
Uh, 16GB SD card included. You need it for songs, and the Droid can upgrade (oops, can iPhone upgrade?)
Droid Doesn't have unlocked WiFi
It does, you fail.
Droid Doesn't have the greatest mobile OS
I'll take Android, you can your closed little toy OS.
Everything the Droid Doesn't have, the iPhone does.
Your points...epic fail. try again.
You make a great point. I'm an iPhone user, but would switch to the Droid in a heartbeat, especially after the explanation you gave above.
FINALLY i see that it has multi touch. no doubt that im gettin this phone as soon as possible!
