Back in the year 2000 I spent $2000 on a VGA camera with a zoom lens. A Sony TRV900 DV camera. You make it sound like this is ridiculous.
I took my DSi hiking to Machu Piichu and came back with many excellent photos. Over the 4-day hike, My DSi waas used more often than my real camera due to longer battery life, shorter start-up time, and the speed with which it takes shots. I used it to help frame some great photos, and help determine if it was worth it to pull out the big guns for a far-off scene.
All in all, the DSi is a hell of a lot of fun. For taking people of my own face, the tiny resolution is more than good enough. There is no way my ugly mug needs 10 megapixels. That is just silly.
