DROID Phone Holder and Multimedia Station go for $30 apiece

Already got your DROID pre-order in and wonder what else you can blow your non-assured holiday bonus on? Well, that Phone Holder car dock and Multimedia Station home dock (pictured, our hands-on gallery is here) have just gotten price tags: $30 a pop. About in line with the general worldwide dock population, but horrifically overpriced in comparison with our own homebrew dual-purpose solution.

I am honestly very happy with the $30 price point. It's not ultra-cheap, but it's not nearly as bad as I was expecting. For well-built, useful docks I am perfectly content to pay $30. For those who still don't like that price, as others have mentioned, there will be about a thousand alternatives on eBay for much less.

It ain't a dock, it's a charger, and that is all they market it as. You spend the money for the coolness factor, nothing more.

All I have seen is issues with it causing the device to get hot and cause screens to crack and discolor. I am not so sure that is "coolness factor" - not for me at least.

I guess $30 is not horrible, but it could be a lot cheaper. all it does is charge the phone with a couple of magnets to activate the multimedia mode. there is no audio/tv out or anything to this dock. They can charge $15 and still make money.

I would buy the car dock for $30 if it were available for my phone. I have bought a couple cheap car chargers and neither worked. I decent one was $20. $10 more to get the car dock seems very fair.

You can't do it with the iPhone, even though it's on version 3. Droid can do it on day one with this accessory. I'm actually praising your stupid Apple alternative device.

Hey, no BS from me, Mr. Tough Guy. I had credit card locked and loaded, and the duly appointed representatives of the Best Buy corporation in Watertown, MA told me that they didn't know about any such promotion. They acted like it was some rumor I'd read off of the internet, and I was some deranged geek looking for a product that doesn't exist. Maybe they just didn't have any more allocated. Maybe their manager is an incompetent boob. Maybe they were just a couple of assholes that were looking to get quick jollies off of a dork all hopped up on a marketing campaign. But those two Best Buy homies told me with straight faces that they didn't have the ability to help me with a pre-order of the Droid.

Who do I talk to about this?

I have the droid but not the multimedia dock. When I got my phone, I also got a clear hard cover for the phone.

Will the phone with the cover still fit in the dock?
I'm thinking not, but I really hoping it does

Here's my two cents. I bought the dock when I bought the phone. I agree with those people who don't see it as a media dock. However as a convenient desk top charging dock that let's it double as an alarm clock it works great. My only criticism there is that even in it's "night" setting it's still quite bright. The light from the display can cast shadows on my ceiling from the ceiling fan.

For music and video playback it works using the speaker on the phone. Obviously not great sound, but like I said, about the same as a clock radio.

I'm hoping somebody who knows how to program may write some apps for it. Like a dimmer, or maybe some apps so you can see your calendar as well as the weather.
