First Storm 2 ad huffs and puffs for attention (video)
Given the timing of Storm 2's launch and the Motorola DROID's unveiling, you'd think Verizon had all but abandoned its touchscreen BlackBerry. But lo and behold, we do have a new television spot. "Who says lightning never strikes twice" -- who said it ever struck the first time? Video after the break.

Ouch.
After NOKIA N900 and MOTOROLA droid this one sobers down behind the corner
Very cool ad!
the text continued.. "Incredible.... I just checked out the Droid with Google Maps Nav and as soon as I'm done making this dumb commercial about bad weather I'm picking one up."
Who said a phone cannot be thoroughly underwhelming twice? Just look at the iPhone.
yes... its very underwhelming......
to everyone that doesnt own one, and cries about them on the interwebz.
The Perfect POS!
are you talking bout the iphone?
How does it feel? How does it feel, engadget to be able to smack down years of people's hard work in the gadget arena with one simple turn of a phrase?
Because you guys just did.
Yeah, some of us still want a Storm2 over the Droid! You guys are just having nerdgasms over all the new Google stuff.
its because they aren't apple..not going to lie i do think the iphone is the best currently...but comparing the iphone 3g to the 3gs and the storm to the storm 2? i mean they are working hard and im sure these will be an amazing phone
Blackberry earned the Storm's current reputation. They put out a shitty half-baked product and let users find out it wasn't ready for prime time. That's where the Storm is at. It is not Engadget's job to hype people up for the second version of what was an incredibly bad product.
If it does in fact correct all of the original's problems then it will get credit. It'd be dumb to assume it does though, and I'd be much more upset with Engadget for doing that. You can go to a site like crackberry if you just want to be told everything Blackberry does is good.
I'm sure it feels fine. They are paid to critique all things gadget related. Perhaps you thought you were at one of the following:
Blackberry.com
Crackberry.com
Verizon.com/Storm2
As a Storm owner I can say the 5.0 Firmware is a night and day difference. The firmware corrected everything wrong with the first Storm so I wouldn't be surprised if the Storm 2 is as close to perfect as blackberry can make it.
As soon as i switched to the storm from the tour, i used my phone less and less, just because i was pissed at it. Then the firmware came out and it has been rocking and definitely is a mad day and night difference. if the storm 2 has more power, this will be a Huge deal and a major improvement.
Yes, the new firmware made it all better, and at the same time, crippled the battery life. Back down the rabbit hole we go.
@ aaronaaron
Sounds like you gotta kill some apps running in the background, broseph.
RIM should've focus on their Bold line instead of making these crappy touch-screen devices.
Um... they did... it's called the Bold 2... and it's coming shortly
not to mention between this and the last Storm there have been plenty of non-touch additions; Javelin, Onyx, etc
A blackberry without a keyboard is an immediate fail. Its what allows me to text while driving and working, without looking.
I hope you die in a car crash.
i hope you're in the car he hits.
@reddsharkk,
I used to think the same thing. Your brain gets used to a keyboard where you can't feel the buttons just as easy. I can type on the storm with only a couple glances on the tougher words.
Also, just like to second that 5.0 is an awesome os. I didn't start using the storm until the 5 beta, so I honestly have no idea what people's problems are with the storm...it works great for me. I know a lot of people got burned, but that's not the case anymore.
Still waiting for a decent review. From what I know about the device so far, its looking pretty good. But then, Storm 1 looked pretty good at first, too.
I think that's exactly why not that many people are interested in the storm 2, in addition to the obvious droid factor.
THUNDAAAA STORM!!! (twas bored)
WOah actually liked the commercial...
Me too. I have an iPhone 3gs, but this Blackberry should help Verizon attract a lot of smartphone customers if it's as snappy is it looks in the commercial.
It's not a bad commercial at all. I haven't heard any widespread consumer complaints about the first Storm, either. I've seen the stuff on tech-blogs -- but every time I've asked someone about their Storm on the street, they've loved it.
My colleague was one of the first to buy Storm when it was launched.....he couldnt stand it...he said it has few good points, but the negatives outweighed its positives...he sold it and was cursing RIM every day for making that sure press thingy...hehe
"Who says lightning never strikes twice"
Um, no one says that. Lightning strikes twice all the time. In fact, it strikes quite a few times. Now if you meant to say "lightning never strikes the same PLACE twice", that makes more sense. Especially considering the storm never STRUCK it big any PLACE. Even the first time.
@reisa - Then you haven't asked around enough. The majority of Storm owners were disappointed with their purchase. Some die-hard BB fans, and people that truly don't know any better said it was fine but they were in a small minority. Most owners didn't technically "hate" it, they just didn't like it.
I tried it out when it was released and I was literally laughing out loud within about 20 seconds of using it. It was truly, truly, terrible. One of the least enjoyable devices I've ever held in my hands. When you're used to the responsiveness and accuracy of the touchscreen found on the iPhone, the Storm feels like something created 10 years ago.
I'm a gadget fan, not a fan of any one brand, and I enjoy any piece of technology that's fun to use. The Storm was NOT that.
switchfoot!!!
This Ad is so cool, I like it way more than all those other iphone and previous bb ads, anyway, to all you bb haters, there's one reason why Blackberry fans will keep buying them no matter what, Blackberry Messenger.
Call me crazy, but I prefer the OS/environment of BBs to any other. And I've used WinMo, Android, and iPhone OS in fair amounts as well.
meh. I had my blackberry for a year and now I have my iphone and to tell you the truth, BBM is kinda silly. it's meant to be for power business users... but then it just comes off like a wanna be AIM. you can send pictures/videos/text unlimited with most providers for a reasonable price now. bottom line, if you're like me and you just want to be connected to people, texting/picture messaging (which can even be done on the iphone... finally) etc. is a lot easier with the persons phone number [that you already have] than some postal-code-like pin that's exclusive to other BBM users.
there are enough messengers out there, why add another? icq, aim, yahoo, etc.
I understand that the iphone (or omnia, or n97, etc.) are not for everyone and that RIM makes some pretty snazzy devices... but are you really only sticking with your blackberry for another messenger?
Blackberry Messenger is not like the other messenger apps available for any other phone, It's closer to a messenger client on pc than any other, you can easily send pictures, voice clips, update your status and change your display picture right away, plus it has some features that I haven't seen on most other messenger for smartphones like showing the music you're listening to, and showing when the other person is writing a message and viceversa, it also shows when the other person reads your message (so you can know if they are ignoring you or busy) and shows them as "unreachable" if they turned off their phone or are out of signal. It's a much better IM experience than what you get using beejive or other IM clients, it's always on, and it's exclusive with blackberry devices, so if you IM with friends a lot and many of your friends use it, or just to always stay connected with your significant other, it's a must-have.
This is a really well done and just plain cool ad. My issue is it doesn't show me what's new. It makes a claim that it's faster by showing me a keyboard, but the phone looks the same, the OS looks the same, everything looks the same. Why is it better, what's the difference...the commercial could be for the Storm 1 if there wasn't a simple statement telling you it's the second one.
Any Storm 1 user would know right away. did you see how fast the screen turned? that does not happen with the storm 1.
Any ad that uses "its on a better network" as a reason to buy the PHONE is a fail.
Its funny though, this time last year "its the iphone killer", "the clickable screen is awsome". Same again this year, sans clicky screen, plus wifi.
Where's Jim Halpert?!?
This ad's actually pretty neat. This should have been how the Storm 1 was going to be, but maybe they needed it sorta as a trial edition of some sort, Apple did the same thing with the first iPhone so give BB a pass. By the looks of this and the pre-views it's been getting it looks like it might be what it was envisioned to be. No, this isn't going after the "iPhone killer" theme here, Verizon's going after AT&T's network, and they have the Moto Sholes to take care of that. This will be for the more business oriented customer base, Verizon doesn't just put their focus on one demographic. With all that said, seems like VZ is finally making wonderful moves, about time.
"did you see how fast the screen turned?"
.... Add says screen images simulated
the same disclaimer shows up on iphone comercials and plenty of other commercials.
iPhone commercials say "sequences shortened," big difference. The images on the screen are live and real, it's that they cut out pressing the home button, selecting a new app, etc. in order to fit as many different apps as they can in a 15 second time slot.
"Screen images simulated" means the image you see was created with computer graphics instead of a real working phone on camera.
Macvista:
No, it isn't.
'Sequences shortened' also means that that website that loaded near-insatantly will probably take a minute or two, and that app will take more than 3 seconds to load.
Is that not what I said?
"The images on the screen are live and real, it's that they cut out pressing the home button, selecting a new app, etc. in order to fit as many different apps as they can in a 15 second time slot."
That's still a lot different from showing you computer simulated images of an interface that may not even match the commercial in real life.
Sequences shortened = real live video of an app working, real live footage of a video playing on an actual iPhone screen, real live video of an actor using his/her fingertips to conduct gestures on a real iPhone but without the extra steps and time necessary to complete every task you see (otherwise the commercial would have to be 30, 40, 60, 120 seconds instead of 15).
Screen images simulated = totally fake video slapped on what's really the non-working screen of a BlackBerry Storm 2 where the actor is acting out a well rehearsed sequence of finger movements that aren't actually taking place on the phone that's on your TV/computer screen.
Do you see the difference?
Meh, I prefer ads with cutesy hipster songs (nearly always female voice accompanied by simple piano riff) that aren't so aggressive and dark. I just want to feel safe knowing my phone is endorsed by the latest music sensation of a niche 18-24 year old demographic AND that it encourages to buy said music sensation's album whenever I make the mistake of opening the music store app.
Is there a phone out there for ME!?!? :|
no sorry...there isnt a phone out there for you. Maybe instead of posting 'tard comments in reply to people that actually have some good points to add to discussion because they have knowledge or useful input about a topic you could contribute in more positive terms.
Having played with the device....its really sweet. Feels alot better than the Storm 1. The touch-click is right-on and overall the device is smooth. Touch-click is very well made this time around. Much more responsive. OS 5.0 is awesome!. Slimmer profile. Wi-Fi (you realize how much of a milestone this is for VZW to finally offer a BB with wi-fi?!. This is nothing like the storm 1 so don't compare it to that monstrosity (however on a side-note OS 5.0 even makes the Storm 1 alot better....go into your local VZW store and play with it, right away if you have ever used a the first Storm you will notice a big differance. This will do very well....2 bad no one is interested in it because of how much the Storm 1 wrecked everyones hopes and dreams lol + Android is gonna be the new kingpin and VZW's new baby. Overall i really really like the Storm 2
