HTC Droid Eris peeks its head out once more, shows off 5MP camera
Hey, HTC -- we're onto you. We know you're a little upset that the lower-end Droid Eris isn't getting much attention now that the DROID is all over Verizon's marketing agenda, but it's not like we don't feel your pain. For those interested in spending a full Benjamin less on their next Android handset (on Big Red, anyway), the Droid Eris looks to offer that very solution, and now a few more sneak peeks have shown that a 5 megapixel camera (with a video record mode) is gracing the rear. We're also told that WiFi will be onboard (right, VZW?), and a bundle of joy will also be thrown in after mail-in rebate. Whatever that means.

this needs more cowbell... and android because that sounds like Droid. Unlike windows mobile 6.5 which sounds like cow farts
...it HAS android...
whoops... my bad it looks so similar to 6.5 in those pics.
You need to get your glasses checked buddy.
Pretty woman .... walking down Verizon St... Pretty woman the kind I like to see.... Even tho you ain't got no Snapdragon... no one can look as good as you ***RAWR*** merccccyyyyyyyyyyy
Jesus Christ chill out man
go.. outside
get off.. engadget
take.. break :]
Dude, just because you don't like the phone, Verizon, teh comment you don't have to power down rank me :P Don't hate.
dude I didn't downrank you at all. I have and like Verizon and I'm gonna get the Droid once I test it out
I just thought the song was a little...... weird? like... it kind of was
Looks kinda like a mix of the Sprint designed Hero and the Magic. I like it.
I was thinking the Euro Hero and the Tattoo.
anyone know if i can get this without the data plan? im a poor college kid who gets wifi throughout his college so i dont really need a data plan
@ -Z-
...im with you on this one. good, solid low-end and inexpensive android (alternative to droid if you dont want to spend as much money and if youre just interested in android). 5mp? strong data network? sexy looking phone? i cant wait to see it first-hand for my own review.
Yawn
next
I'm contemplating returning my Sprint Hero (within 30 days), and get
the Eris. Better network and cheaper price.
I'd rather have the Eris (despite the cpu), because the Droid is ugly
and I can live without the keyboard.
yeah cheaper price.. cept for the plan you will be picking up for the next 2 years.
you lose those cost savings by being on verizon versus sprint. and how is it the better network? sprint roams on verizon.
They use the same network, if you have service problems you should try switching to either Tmobile or ATT
Agreed.
Everyone always says "but sprint roams on verizon, same coverage!"
That's all fine and dandy for if you're in a Sprint dead zone and want to place a call, but when driving through backroads of Harford County, MD and northern Baltimore County, it's lots of fun dropping my calls on my work phone every 3 to 4 minutes.
When we start doing handoffs to roaming partners, that argument will hold more ground.
Don't take this as Sprint-bashing -- I'm likely getting a Sprint Hero for my personal phone, as I don't travel those backroads often when I'm off work, and Sprint works fine where I go personally. But it's still a possible concern.
Do it. I have done a test side by side with the Sprint Hero and Verizon Eris, and the Eris is faster it seems. And you won't be the only one doing this. I have had Sprint customers coming in my store asking us when it will be out because Sprints network is horrible, they roam or cant get service (NO, SPRINT DOES NOT ROAM ON VERIZONS NETWORK IN ALL PLACES!) And they wasnt 3G where ever they go.
@VZW Is the Eris running 2.0 out of the box? Per your speed comment. Thanks.
@VZW
Any 3G Spring Phone can roam on Verizon networks voice and data, for free too. Where do you live and how do you do test your phones?
@outphase
My phone has a roaming only option, so then it stays on Verizon's network. Hopefully that will help some of your problems.
Although I've had qwerty's for probably about 5 years now, I wanna go SIP. This looks almost perfect, except I want WVGA. Hopefully the HTC Dragon isn't too far off, I think it'll be the one.
******************with a data plan
:(
Looks nice. I kind of like it, but Verizon's plans are just too much money. My grandfathered Tmobile plans are giving me great value, but I just want a better phone.
Personally I like this better than DROID.
Droid looks too square, this thing has style baby, style!
but can it play farmville?
Don't be gay now.
I bet it can do MafiaWars 2.0
or Crysis...oh wait
Can you leave now?
Am I the only one who isn't an exceptional fan of Sense?
After seeing the stock UI for Eclair (which this may or may not eventually get) it just looks even more meh-ish.
My understanding this HTC Droid (Desire?) is going to have 2.0 but not out of the box. This is also going off my assumption this is a replica of HTC Hero but the Verizon version.

It will get eclair and you can turn off the sense UI anytime you want.
Sense UI is really great, it makes android more functional, it could use a lot of improvements but they are on the right track
Why the Android phones still don't have a front camera for video calling?
Is it an Android limitation?
Not that I use that a lot, but it just seems normal to have it on a 3G phone...
Not a limitation, the Geeksphone One has a front facing camera for video calls, just not a huge demand for it i guess.
This will probably sell better than the Droid, what do you all think?
It has a cheaper entry fee and most consumers are clueless about processor speed, etc...
True, we're in a recession, all people care about is price.
Getting the Droid for myself, but unsure of whether or not the wife will care enough to use this for the cost. Maybe just get a LG BL40 for her ;).
I hear Htc n I automatically think Hyundai.
Am I alone here?
Yes, you are alone.
HTC manufactured the first phone to run Android.
I think the same, and I don't care if they created the internet.
So a company from Taiwan that makes phones reminds you of a company from South Korea that makes cars, ships, memory chips etc. simply because both of their names start with H. Well done !
Will it be possible to get an Eris with a 1 year contract and a larger outlay? Say $200 or $300. This way when the second gen of Snapdragon processor-based android 2.5 or 3.0 phones are arriving, you can sign another contract. Things are going too fast these days to be trapped in 2 year contracts.
Verizon will let you get the two-year price on a phone if you are still in contract on another, all you have to do is add 2 years onto your current contract - i.e. in a year you can get your new phone and be locked in for 3 more years total. They don't seem to care because you sign that magical piece of paper that says they get their money no matter what.
Is there any Americans thAt would seriously drop $500 on a Hyundai,., I mean htc?
Btw my first smart phone was htc in 2004 $550.
Back then wasn't even branded u had to remove battery n sim to reveal htc. Sick dude Anyone???
Ha, North Pole, I see they're ready for the holiday sales season.
We can agree that it won't be a hot seller like the iPhone, because HTC doesn't understand what customers want and needs.
It will be a hot seller. Just not as much so as the iPhone because it won't have the hype. VZw is pushing the Droid.
I'd might take this over the Droid if it's thinner. I don't need hardware keyboard and I'd rather install TouchPal for Android as that's a phenomenal software keyboard.
It's true that Sprint roams on Verizon in most areas but that does NOT mean it's the same network. It's only the same network when you are roaming which is hardly ever. You also won't get EVDO while roaming as that's generally not in the roaming agreement.
I think I will be getting rid of my Tour for this.. It keeps getting better and better!
