iTunes goes 9.0.2: adds support for Apple TV 3.0, kills Pre sync

Update: Looks like it killed Pre sync -- now, act like you're surprised!
iTunes 9.0.2 adds support for Apple TV software version 3.0, adds an option for a dark background for Grid View, and improves support for accessibility.
iTunes 9 comes with many new features and improvements, including:
• An improved look and feel, including a new Column Browser for easily browsing your artists or albums, movies, TV shows, and more.
• iTunes Store has a brand new look, with improved navigation for quick and easy exploration.
• iTunes LP and iTunes Extras create unique experiences that feature exclusive interviews, videos, photos, and more - available with select album and movie purchases on the iTunes Store.
• Home Sharing helps you manage your family's iTunes collection between computers in your home. iTunes can automatically transfer new purchases, or you can choose just the items you want.
• Genius Mixes are created for you by iTunes and play songs from your library that go great together.
• iPod and iPhone syncing now allows you to organize your iPhone and iPod touch home screens directly in iTunes. Syncing is now also more flexible, allowing you to sync individual artists, genres, or TV show and Podcast episodes.
• iTunes U items are now organized into their own section in your iTunes library.
• Sync with iPod nano (5th generation), iPod classic (Fall 2009), and iPod touch (Fall 2009).
• iTunes 9 also includes many other improvements, such as HE-AAC encoding and playback, more flexibility with Smart Playlists rules, simpler organization of your media files inside an iTunes Media folder, and more.

anyone know if this update breaks iPhoneBrowser or iFunBox support?
I haven't updated to the newest Itunes yet, still on 9.0.1 but as of that version, Iphone browser was still not working.
First it crashed as soon as you coneected the dock cable.
The iphonebrowser team released a beta version, but now it recognize that your phone is attached.
You could use diskaid but that is payware with a 10 day trial, and iphone Explorer works but only lets you upload individual files at a time and not whole folders and subfolders.....
Does this cause problems with jailbroken phones?
finally someone to bring this up. i was just about to ask the same question
from @MuscleNerd on the Dev team via Twitter: Just confirmed that today's iTunes 9.0.2 release is safe :) Won't interfere with jailbreak or unlock.
Thanks Tattoo!
Why would I care? The beauty of owning a Pre is that I don't have to install iTunes on my system.
You cared enough to post here, didn't you? And while nobody cares if you use iTunes or not, a lot of people do use iTunes. It's relevant to them, obviously.
oh so you use that great software that Palm wrote for the Pre. errrr yeah, that's what I thought
Meh. Been sinking my iPod 3G with Songbird for a month now. Pretty happy with it. Half the overhead of that POS iTunes, and it's skinning ability is pretty nice.
Yes, the best media management software on the planet just got better. This is why Apple is the best.
fanboy much?
And as usual, Palm's next WebOS update will probably restore iTunes sync, but won't bother to fix any important bugs, like its app storage limit issue, or give the camera video capabilities.
Wow all the apple fanboy haters are butt hurt over the pre using itunes sync. Its like having an iphone but with freedom , remember freedom guys? That what the pre is, and what the iphone is not.
I dunno, my iPhone seems pretty free... Yeah I had to jail break it, but I'd have to unlock the pre and get it off that piece of crap network from sprextelvirginboostmobile or whatever they're calling themselves nowadays.
Face it, not everyone agrees on the best devices and ways to syn or not sync as the case may be. That's why we have choices, you know... Those fun things you have to make when you can't afford both the iPhone, HD2, and the hero? LOL
I personally only use iTunes for my iPhone, for everything else... I use media player sadly. I don't understand what the big deal is about this, Apple is well within their rights to break pre-syncing and palm needs to get off their lazy arses and do things the right way.
Why do you need freedom when you have the best?
"Freedom" only matters when your phone/brand of choice is being steam-rolled by the competition.
The irony of this is, if it was the other way around (Apple trying to hijack Palm's software) all the Apple haters would be singing a different tune lol
Hahaha too true.
C'mon people, Apple never forced you to get stuck with the crappy Pré. If you want sync software so badly, pressure Palm to develop one, they owe you at least that much.
i can't even use it [itunes] until my library finishes updating
i have 44,850 mp3s [124.4 days]
it's been going for over an hour
And you still use iTunes for what reason?
I am curious .... how many of those mp3s have you legally licensed ??
I'm tired of how a pop-up window saying "new software is available from Apple" pops up every week, too bad they can't make it intelligent enough to guess that if i haven't downloaded any apple crap 20 weeks in a row it's time to stop it. If i wanted so much apple stuff i'd have a mac.
go take a peek in the software update preferences. there's a box for that
Yes it is jailbreak free, and yes you can return to the dark background for grid view, check your prefs.
Edit, sorry should have said...It does not mess with your jailbreak...
*gasp* I'm surprised!
Was that good?
What I don't understand is why you people are wasting your time using iTunes to sync the pre to begin with. It's a friggin resource hog and runs slow as crap. Try Songbird or WinAMP or something else.
I know why Palm used iTunes as a lure to attract buyers, but to the ones that "know better" I'm sure it was the last reason they bought their pre. I know it was at the bottom of my reasons why. I say let the break be permanent and have Palm make their own app or direct people to a superior media manager...they wouldn't have to look far.
Because no one honestly gives a damn about the players you mentioned.
Palm developing their own software... now there is a good idea.
Because people are a bunch of hypocrites. Everybody is whining how crappy iTunes is, yet the same people are bitching that they cannot sync with iTunes.
And the battle goes on!
It's the little pleasures. Thank you Apple for returning the dark background that should have never left grid view.
As for Pre sync functionality breaking...
This is a battle of egos between Steve Jobs and Jon Rubenstein. They are now on bitter terms, especially over Palm hiring top Apple engineers to work on the Pre.
Palm will likely keep trying to hack and break the USB standard by falsely identifying itself as an Apple device. But my guess is eventually Apple will come up with a good solution that will block it once and for all.
Let's face it. We all know that Apple is a bunch of underhanded slimeys who happened onto a gimmick that worked and marketed well.
I say we allow them to break all ties and syncing with everyone else who is now making better devices and lose face.
I personally don't like itunes, apple customer service is toilet worthy, and the lemmings of the apple frontier can continue drinking their kool-aid and live peacefully oblivious.
No need to speak ill of the naive and mis-led.
How ironic. You sounds more like a hypocrite Apple hater. If you don't like iTunes, then why should you be upset about this? Shouldn't you be happy that Pre users have the opportunity to use other software like double twist and Songbird instead of iTunes? If you don't like iTunes, this is actually a good thing. Why bother with iTunes in the first place?
Oh, don't get me wrong, I agree with you there. There's enough functionality right on the Palm Pre itself to make your own playlists.
I'm happy and really have 0 occasion to use itunes anymore. In this war I could lobby for either side really. What gets me is the elitism that apple exercises to banish other devices and people who for whatever reason have chosen an alternative. It’s like they are saying “we know we have our customers by the balls and convinced them they’re in the best camp possible, we don’t need an occasion to advertise to you or ask for your business. We’re happy giving our customers drivel and having them pay for it. And we have quite enough customers, thanks” If they were a real business they would use the occasion to advertise or at least PR by allowing Itunes to provide it’s core service which is music. Would they not give more people occasions to buy more music through them? I just don’t get it from a business perspective and shows that Apple right now feels so very much that it’s the king of the universe it’s happy with it’s head up it’s own a$$.
And for the record, I am an apple hater. I had the iPhone 3G and I had enough poor service, poor customer support, poor provisions of REAL USEABLE apps and poor capability that I have plenty of reason and historyto pass that judgement. I wanted Apple to be my white nightVS MS but they ended up treating me terrible and providing me with poorsupport and what ended up being a poor product.
Bluetooth Still apparently does not work correctly.
I had to give up.
Thor - I think your problem is that you're a moron. Yes, Bluetooth apparently doesn't work correctly. That's why it's working correctly for everybody, right?
What elitism are you talking about? Apple doesn't banish "other devices". They're cutting the Pre off from syncing because the Pre is doing it wrong. It's identifying itself as an Apple iPod, which violates the USB IF agreement, and Palm has already been warned to knock it off. Palm is 100% in the wrong there. Apple isn't preventing anybody else from syncing to iTunes... obviously. Have you not seen the blackberry desktop sync software? Works just fine with iTunes.
You being ignorant about Apple and what they do doesn't make Apple bad. It just means you're ignorant.
Jack. you obviously don't use the bluetooth very extensively there professor.... There is no true A2DP. The most you can hope to control is play/pause while Apple does NOT allow you to control selection of music or any seek function but just about every other cell maker does, even "dumb" phones from 4-5 years ago captain fruity.
Apple just continues to dissapoint left, right and centre. They provide half assed services and upgrades for their customers and make them thank their lucky stars for the drivel they get. That's why I had to throw in the towel after giving them a lengthy one year + chance to improve.
You own a Pre for a year then let me know which is more enjoyable to own.... Until then, you're a hippocrit and obviously don't research where it suits you.
And if Apple was not elitist, they would not waste the resources even cutting off the pre genius. FCC or no FCC.
Now don't go away mad and do another 4 in the morning "I don't know what the hell I'm talking about, all I know is I need to defend my poor purchase decision" rant....
Just go away.
so which update will turn the IPOD touch into a great gaming platform as jobs claimed?
Let's be honest here. How many people are actually using the Palm Pre AND iTunes? With the syncing being broken before already, and with software like double twist, Songbird, etc being available, why would a Pre users even bother with iTunes? This Pre syncing breaking news should not be news, and nobody should care. It's only a linkbait for fanboys fighting each other.
And Palm, stop this iTunes/Apple envy nonsense. Look around you, your problem is not Apple, Android is the one killing you while you're whining at Apple. Don't bother with iTunes syncing. Just focus on shipping your product worldwide and quickly, and focus on attracting developers. By the time Android 2.0 gets into everything, your days may be truly numbered, if it's not already.
Getting tired of downloading 80+ Gig updates. Updates should be a delta to the existing file, patching it on the fly. Downloading the whole 80 Gig enchilada to add minor updates to an existing suite is just driving me nuts.
any one know
that video problem fix or not ?
(mp4 video double their actual play time problem )
@jedimacfan
itunes been selling music without DRM for a while now. if you gonna make a crack at Apple at least make sure you get your facts straight.
anyways, Palm would save time and money and just do the same thing Blackberry did and develop a sync software. And to be honest, I never sync my music...i just transfer my playlists to the music folder...basic drag and drop. Plus, who ever listen to their music on their phone consistently. This whole syncing issue between Apple and Palm is too overrated.
Yeah, the issue is definitely overrated, but it's a very successful linkbait, and as far as engadget is concerned, number of clicks is what mattered. :)
*facepalm* It seems that Apple's getting more and more ridiculous ...
what the f! they killed Pre Sync.
edit: "oh my God! They killed Palm Pre"
88.5 MB ? it's 99.9 In windows
anyway i like changing , thanks apple .
I don't download itunes on any of my computers. Once you go Zune, you never go back.
I own a Zune but I'm telling you their downloadable software IMO is better!
Apple is a corporation and as such tries to maximize profits for its shareholders. Palm also tries to maximize profits to its shareholders. No company in history has willingly given up market share to a competitor, ever.
Apple and Palm are competitors, seriously guys remember that.
Apple would gleefully kill Palm, disembowel it, and it its liver with fava beans and a nice Chianti. Palm would do the same to Apple.
Please, any arguments are valid except the "evil corporation". Grow the f*** up.
