Android 2.0 ported to original T-Mobile G1 (video)
Did you hear? Google's got this little OS called Android that has reached the ripe, mature age of 2-point-Oh. With the giant eclair now sitting on Google's front lawn and the SDK out in the wilds, what was poor Akira Harada to do with all that code knowing that the Motorola Droid was still days away from shipping? Port it to the original Android device, the T-Mobile G1 / HTC Dream, naturally. It's a rough port, not even close to being optimized but it should whet your appetites for all those official updates and delicious home-cooked ROMs we expect to be arriving in the hallowed halls of the XDA forums in the days ahead. See it after the break... roll it!

this gets my appetite really wet
I saw Cameron Diaz in his contacts
Thats the only thing i noticed was new
looks like i'll be up late getting this to work
Just don't whet your pants, okay?
Yippy-I-O!
Urk.
It shouldnt even be a question wether your device will be updated to 2.0 or not. ALL Android devices should be supported until the updates become useless because the devices lack the hardware to support it.
Google has REALLY dropped the ball on this one. One area where WinMo is shocking as well.
I was really into the XDA scene when i had my HTC Cruise but OFFICIAL updates would of been much better. I think i only got one official update from HTC and it updated nothing.
Yeah, I hate how Microsoft made me pay for a new computer, because my AMD Duron 1Ghz/128Mb of ram couldn't run Windows 7 with full Aero and XP compatability.
The thing limiting the G1 is its RAM. Although, if this runs as well as the Hero port now runs (which I use exclusively on my G1) I will be VERY happy. I drop bluetooth priveledges, but gain Facebook integration (lol, social life) and the much better TouchFlo apps
128megs of ram and you thought that meant you needed a whole new pc instead of a 40dollar stick of ram? nobody made you do that :)
@Dazza , Are you sure its a computer ? coz my Nokia 5800 RAM is 128MB too :)
konshuss: RAM has nothing to do with Aero and XP mode. Aero would have required a new GPU, and XP mode would have required a new CPU that supports virtualization. So yeah, he pretty much needed a new computer.
@dazza
You'd just need a stick of ram and a cheap $30 graphics card and you could run windows 7 with aero...
I love how posters completely missed Dazza's sarcasm there.
Anyways we weren't supposed to get anything after 1.5 on my G1 but we did get 1.6 so I still have my fingers crossed for Donuts. The RAM is a limiting factor but the CPU is the same if not a little underclocked.
While I certainly don't feel entitled to all future updates, I do wish that we would at least get updates for the duration of the typical 2-year contract from the month the phone (G1) was first released.
Okay jokers...Dazza was being facetious when he said Win 7 wouldn't run on his machine that could barely run XP well. (XP doesn't run well unless you have at least 256MB of RAM). Also for the most part if your motherboard still measures RAM in megabytes it most likely won't support more than 1 GB of RAM meaning that it won't handle Win 7.
Basically his post was poking fun at the one complaining about backwards support for newer Android releases on the G1.
Droid will unfortunately not save Motorola. As soon as A 2.0 has been applied on the rest of the devices out there, the interest for the motorola offering will be diminished.
Motorola just isn't that good of a hardware manufacturer. That was proved with the very mediocre Motorola Cliq, which hardware and usability was on par with the very definition of mediocre. I know that Engadget hypes the good old Moto (maybe a grain of nationalism there) but when it comes to market share and actually making a difference on the market, there really is none for Motorola to take any longer.
i find moto phones to be rather tough.... i feel safe... like holding a lump of steel, ready to hammer the nearest guy with it.....
i wonder if the droid is bulletproof....
Exactly. I owned a V3 Razr, a Z3 Rizr, and a v3xx Razr in the leadup to my iPhone and the build quality was superb.
Motorola hardware really? My girlfriend went through 2 KRAZRs because the OS kept getting corrupt and would say it needs to be reflashed. Her third one barely lasted 8 months before the front cover started falling off and the batter would die after like 6 hours.
I've also seen my friends' RAZRs be held together with tape because they front and back covers were falling off.
The guy in the video is so excited his hairs is standing straight up!
"crap, crap, crap, crap" (2:06)
Is it just me, i mean i'm not being nasty or anything, but is android sort of cheap quality as a opposed to iphone os?
It's just you. Everyone else is super pumped for Android 2.0 :D
really excited for this one.
and i'm going to be the first to say these things.
first whoever cameo cam you showed her phone number. haha
also showed the balance of your checking account.
and this dude is ultra gay.
long live android!
I think it's funny how the 2.0 is being pushed as "two-dot-oh".
Yeah do people really say that in America? Everyone I know would say 'point'.
2-point-Oh No He didn't...
I can't speak for the rest of America, but I say "point" when referencing version numbers.
wickedsick!
This is exciting! If the hackers are able to do it, clearly Google and T-Mobile can make it work. This gives me high hopes that we'll seen an official 2.0 update for the G1 sooner or later :-)
Yeah, but a GSM version of the Droid went through the FCC yesterday. I think G1 owners will be Droid owners in 6 months.
Givin Cameo Cam a call right now.
Half of those improvement are copied from iPhone OS.
A good initial effort for the legacy android devices. Looking forward to seeing what Cyanogen comes up with on this one. Hopefully it doesn't take too much effort to see some more of the 2.0 features on this port (new nav features, car home, etc).
I would say its funny, but its not, since I have a G1 as well, but you can see the battery being eaten alive during this walk-through.
I just called Cam Cameo at 1-234-234-56...hey wait a minute. Something's not right here.
That's not a real phone number. That's not a real phone number at all!
Hey everyone! Cam Cameo is a phony! A big fat phony!
And here I was thinking of asking her to the big dance!
I guess I'll just stay home and weep.
You'd be staying home weeping anyway.
Is he playing Castle Crashers in the background?
Where are all the great Android games? The answer is simpler than we think,
The real culprit behind the lack of Android apps isn’t lack of developer adoption or a difficult SDK – it’s the ludicrous 256MB limit on app storage for most current Android phones and Android 2.0 itself. The OS also does not support the installation of apps on removable storage like SD cards, further ruining chances for more effusive and expansive titles. Considering most apps are in the 10MB range we’re talking a max of 25 apps on a good day and about 5 on a bad one.

You can get emulators in the app store though. I play Earthbound when I'm bored.
2.0 ...................
I tried my best to pay attention, but I couldn't help but pay attention to Castle Crashers playing in the background
that didn't take long at all. wow, these guys are quick. guess that's the beauty of open-source
lets hope this gets stable for the g1, i have to wait till january to get the droid!
Hahaha! No way! I used to work with that guy at a Blockbuster a while back.
Let me guess, you're still working there and he's moved on to hacking software.
No. I'm a software programmer now. Good attempt at being funny though. You might get it right some day.
it takes a little time for google android to thrive.
