xpPhone teased with specs and pictures, makes Windows XP young again
Don't panic, we haven't gone back in time. What we're looking at here is the world's first but still-yet-to-be-released phone that runs on Windows XP, and its Chinese maker has just released some juicy specs and interface images to tease us all. The ITG xpPhone will be blessed with the chutzpah-filled AMD "Super Mobile" CPU, coupled with either 512MB or 1GB RAM. Storage options range from 8GB SSD to 120GB HDD (probably 1.8-inch) and everything in between. While the sheet confirms both GSM and CDMA support, ITG's pre-order page -- which looks more like a newsletter sign-up page at the moment -- is still vague on the phone's availability and price. For now we'll just continue to gaze at the interface pictures until something happens.

Hey 911? I need an ambulance! I've been in an accident! I'm at 100 street and *BSOD*
Hey 911? I need an ambulance! I've been in an accident! I'm at 100 street and, oh ya please call steve'o & see if he will approve this first!
Since when is Gizmodo a viable source?
Sorry couldn't resist
Also, that keyboard is questionable.. I'm guessing this thing is about 8" diagonal.. so it might work
i agree, this looks more like a MID than a phone.
I would buy it :)
I think I might to*BSOD*
only if you don't mind viruses on you phone.
...written on a windows
I would install 7 in it if it works
Actually, I would too... but I'm sure this is a heavily modified XP. I'd rather skip WinMo7 altogether.
Disclosure: I have an android phone and I like it - but I wouldn't mind using a Windows 7 phone for compatibility
@RoboDan
WinMo7? NoNoNo, you got it wrong. Windows 7.
There could be a good chance the XP is this phone Embedded edition.
STOP THE BUS.
Do you mean Windows 7 will be on a phone before WinMo 7?
That's a really small trackpad.
this thing actually looks interesting. lets hope for some moderate pricing now.
Eh, not quite sure if thats what she said, but whatever.
you are gorgeous babe;)
This is why we can't have nice things, Dan.
I like the keyboard but that's it. I need a reliable OS on my phone, I'll be keeping my iPhone 3GS.
Windows XP is very reliable, the same can be said for most versions of Windows. People know it too. That's why Microsoft has 90% desktop marketshare.
i think winmo 7 is comming achya
@ dafrety
Your comment must be the most severely ignorant in this whole comment page.
btw, XP is the most reliable.... way to get a BSOD.
Wow, a fresh breath of air, looks really nice.
Looks promising for some reason
promising like dualcor..
About time.
needs a bigger screen
Totally agree. It looks like there is a lot of open real estate that could have made the screen perfect. I like this as a first draft, but I'd really like to see what the next incarnation of this is. Would buy it in a second...
Do want.
Windows 7 with a lot more services disabled than usual.
CDMA? Is it possible it would work on Big Red?
China uses CDMA with a sim card.
Not exclusively, I take some of my GSM phones out there all the time and they work fine.
This is MADNESS!
But seriously, i wish the world would let Windows XP retire peacefully :)
Totally baffling
Windows 7 Embedded will be the new Windows Mobile. Just read about the Windows 7 Embedded target, "GPS, MIDS, SmartBooks, digital photo frames, portable media players, etc." It's destined to happen, just think about it. Why would Microsoft fix Windows Mobile when they have a version of Windows 7 that will run just fine on things like stand alone GPS devices?
And the best part? Windows 7 Embedded works just like the desktop version of Windows 7, it runs the same programs.
Imagine the world being able to run any app on their phone. All developers suddenly become mobile developers. They can quickly write tons of apps. What is the CEO of Microsoft's Moto? "DEVELOPERS, DEVELOPERS, DEVELOPERS, DEVELOPERS"
Why doesn't Engadget ask Microsoft about that or acknowledge it? I mention it from time to time, and usually my comments are eventually removed.

There is one giant problem with this theory. Windows Embedded only runs on X86. This is a bit of a problem when you deal with mobile devices such as a phone.
Allow me to elaborate:
The most energy-saving X86 solutions are either the AMD geode or Intel Atom/G500 combinations. In a perfect world these will use a minimum of 8 watts. On a normal smartphone battery with 1300 mAh these will last maybe 2 hours. This is a bit unacceptable for a phone or pda.
Now lets say Microsoft has a magical non-existing Windows (besides that horror that is CE) for ARM.
There is a slight problem here (besides non-existence):
No Windows Software at all will run on it (and its much to fat for ARM anyhow)
So you see:
Windows 7 Embedded will not be the new Windows Mobile
All I can say is they better have background defragging when idle. I don't want to have to wait five minutes while the dialer program loads because the hard drive contains so many fragments it doesn't know what to do with itself.
1) If you get the SSD version, seek times are negligible even for fragemented files.
2) While there is some overhead to fragmented files on a HDD, unless you are accessing a file many, many times fragmentation does not make as much a difference as people think - especially not 5 minutes.
3) Fragmentation does not make a difference for files that are part of the OS when installed on a blank drive. When you install on a blank drive, all the files are laid out contigously. Fragmentation occurs when you delete and create files, and there is not enough contiguois space left to keep the new file in one large piece. Unles syou are deleting the dialer program, filling you HDD, deleting some files, and reinstalling the dialer, it will not end up in a fragmented state.
I'm not buying anything from a company that can't proofread their own copy. I don't want to "dail" anyone, especially Joe Williams.
And, the text message, please. I think they stole that from a transcript of a text message from Governor Mark Sanford to his mistress in Argentina.
This looks like some high school senior technology project for a new phone.
Of course I'll take one, too.
It was created by ITG - a chinese company. Jackass.
Oh sorry...ITG, The makers of such other great phones as...
hey where are the 1000 lame @ss posts of putting ubuntu on it.
This hardware would be perfect for Ubuntu!!!! Imagine all the open-source goodness!!!!
XP FOREVA!
well...maybe not.
But my xp is running fine
a windows XP phone would be sweet.
when are they coming out with a snow leopard phone. oh.
An XP phone? If it is GSM and can run on t-mobile, and I can get a reasonably priced data plan, then who needs Android? Android is great! But, if you have XP running on a phone, you do not have to get special gmail or google.voice applications. It is all there already. Does this thing have Bluetooth? Does it have a USB port?
I'd get it but, the price is probably horribly expensive.
What is it with UMPCs and shitting out sub-par hardware, coupled usually with bad buttons and either a crappy onscreen keyboard or a terrible little keyboard with buttons that look cool and are actually a pain to use, and being several times the price of a netbook with almost the same specs and likely the same operating system?
I mean, I love the thought of being able to carry something with Windows XP on it in my pocket such as this and would deal with crappy keyboards and bad buttons and a shitty screen and build--It's just the price. And being a phone at the same time? It'll probably be at LEAST 400 dollars more than it's actually worth, but it'll likely be 600-800 dollars more than what the actual hardware and software is worth.
I'm not gonna lie, this just seems like a shitload of fuck.
It probably is, but you have to admit, it is pretty snazzy.
Emulators Galore... A hacker's dream come true!!!!!!-
Thats the droid killer! The battery should be very good
