ATI's dual-GPU Radeon HD 5970 pictured in the wilderness
And now... fighting out of the red corner, weighing in with two Evergreen GPUs, and wearing black trunks and red trim, it's the Radeon HD 5970. ATI's latest challenger for the title of undisputed graphics champion has been snared in the wild, and its photo shoot reveals a suitably oversized beast. Measuring in at 13.5 inches and requiring both an eight- and six-pin power connector, the pre-production sample can fit inside only the roomiest and best-powered rigs around. It's named somewhat confusingly, with AMD dropping its X2 nomenclature for dual GPU setups, but it features two HD 5870 chips running in onboard Crossfire on the same PCB, and foreshadows a HD 5950, which will combine a pair of the more affordable HD 5850s. Performance figures available earlier have been pulled, at the behest of AMD, but we've got plenty of eye candy to admire, and there's also no price tag in sight to spoil our daydreaming pleasure.

I'm just wondering where the $100 5750s are. I have no interest in a monstrosity like this.
5750s $144.99 on Newegg.. Just go for a 5770.. Much better! OR... For $100 more, get the 5850s!
Yes, I wonder as well. Or even the less expensive Radeon HD 5670 would due.
for now i need it to run Torchlight :p
Damn I still have my 3Dfx card =(
That's not a bad thing! Speedbusters, POD, NFS and Carmageddon were the bomb on 3DFX =D I still have an old P3 rig dedicated to 3DFX gaming; uber-leet SLI config as well ;)
What is the relationship between OpenCL and CUDA? Do they both do the same thing? Is CUDA more robust, OpenCL more basic? Are they completely unrelated at all?
Is it just me or anybody else?
I just noticed that almost every Engadget article about Nvidia is somewhat negative. On the other hand, when it comes to ATI, the "sucking-the-ass" tune is not even just subtle.
If this is true, then I think there is something wrong with Engadget.
Competition is always good for consumers. It's true that ATI provides more affordable and powerful products. But Nvidia wins on performance, driver and innovation. Nvidia created PhyX, CUDA. At this moment, only Nvidia support great technologies such as PhyX, OpenCL, CUDA, and DirectComputing. However their products are more expensive.
As media, Engadget shouldn't be so biased.
Drivers for nVidia are good? Yeah right, I've never seen a video card crash so much in my life. When I switched over to ATi, I never had a freeze or graphics artifacts pop up on me anymore.
My friends driver failed so bad for his nvidia (8200), It was WORSE that my 8 year old computers built in gpu (s3graphcs).
I got avg 16fps in warcraft 3
he got 12fps in warcraft 3
How the #$@# does that work
My ati sapphire gets 60fps
And the kicker is the nvidia card nomiconed 1.5 gig's of ram!!!
It's just you, Nvidia didn't make physx they bought the guys who made it, Ageia, and incorporated it into CUDA. Thought I'd throw that tidbit out there.
Almost a year ago I got downrated massively for saying CUDA is pointless to gaming and consumers and nothing come of it. Fast forward present day well whaddya know I spoke the truth.
@ Macbeth: You were right, but you're still gonna get downranked for bragging about it. :P
YAY!
over a foot long and needs 2 power sources? seems like a beta product pushed out to pump up some cash.
the length does seem a little ridiculous, but look at nearly any high-end graphics card these days and you'll see dual power connectors.
I'm surprised people still call engadget biased. Certainly they've had some funky posts in the past, but for this entire year all their reviews and articles have been very unbiased. If you want bias, take a peek at Gizmodo, where every product that competes with an Apple product pretty much gets beaten down by it's editors to the brink of libel and slander
"Just hook it to my vains!!!"
Yes, I wonder as well. Or even the less expensive Radeon HD 5670 would due.
They should have had kept the X2 tag... Defines the powerful dual gpu cards well....
The 5 series needs some more bling to it.......
Dual GPU on crossfire? So I guess it's safe to assume that it won't work on any Windows 7-equipped rig...as W7 hates all of us who have more than one graphics processor, right now.
Huh? My crossfire has been working fine on W7. Sure your drivers and settings are all configured right?
I wonder how many outputs it has... i got the 5870 so I could run my 3 24" ultrasharps instead of running a pair of 4870's. I kind of want to get like a lower end 5x50 card so I can run another monitor or 3. My justification for running so many monitors is that I spend alot of time on my photography businesss as well as doing design stuff for my website, running my server etc. and of course, playing flight sim and TF2.
I can see the phalic advert for this card now... whats big black and 13.5 inches of pure power
nVidia...where are you...?
I know I am waiting for nVidia's next BIG release I myself am now a fanboy of them since the 8800 used to be all ati all the way but i changed i like quality vs quantity.
inpipeline AMD+ ATI Fusion APU (CPU+GPU), could any one stop AMD after?
All we need now is artificial hawk eyes being implanted......and new brain would be nice too.
WOW! That card looks seriously like a bomb or something.
JB
Nobody seems to care about the 5970 anymore, since you love arguing about ATi vs nVidia.
Let's be honest, this thing is a beast, they wanted something to compete against the limited run Mars Edition GTX295, and they got it, stop whining and pointing out Fermi, its one of their serverside GPU/CPU things, that "Isn't meant as a GPU"... i.e, its NOT meant to be all hardcore and gamey, its meant keep servers working smoothly and help cure cancer, then let them convert some videos to show the fruits of their labour.
Can we just focus on how much of a beast this card is in general, and stop being all mushy about its power connectors and size?
Face it, you want immense visual power, you're not gonna get it from a 6 pin connector card or something which is about as big as a USB memory stick, not this year.
I dont understand how it looks the same size as my 5870 yet its got 2 GPUS in there. My 5870 puts out quite a bit of heat just using windows Aero effects.
