Big deal, it's just a bigger hdd.
How many articles have we had about this yet?
Yes, urright.
It must be a big deal because it got you to comment. This is a gadget blog, and this article will generate the views. I'm sure engadget is really concerned that you're not interested.
Why can't Sony commit to making a console. It seems like every month we get a slightly different system, whether it be hard drive capacity, or slim, or have ps2 compatibility, etc. Just make two damn systems, the PS3 and the slim. It's not the freaking difficult.
Microsoft is at fault with this too, constantly changing hard drive capacities and what not. They're not as bad as Sony when it comes to this, but they still do it.
It's annoying and there's no need for it. Yes, I understand that as time goes on drives become cheaper and components get cheaper...but then just lower your prices and move on. It's not hard to upgrade the hard drive if you want a bigger one. This is just getting completely stupid and annoying and makes me feel like Sony isn't yet finished developing the PS3 nor do they know what they want it to be.
Well, it's more that while you can paint your Wii black it won't look as good.* However, Sony's openness and HD accessibility means that changes in capacity are meaningless except to the proles. Still, if it's a slow news day youse takes what youse can get.
*Of course, you could be a badass painter and make it look better. But in general, it'll look worse.
I kind of agree with the OP, I've had a BC 320GB unit for a while. Cost me like 50 bucks for the hard drive. Getting all my stuff from my original 60GB HDD wasn't the easiest thing in the world, though.
You gotta love it when people don't actually read the article and then comment.
I'm lookin at you Jordan
Sigh.
I miss the old days when I my parents took forever to buy me a system or they didn't get me one at all. Now that I can buy any system and game I want, the magic of it all has worn off.
I see people still contemplating about whether to get a PS3 or not. And I've had one since launch! Wish I could experience the same feeling of buying one again.
@loocas Give me a break it's a Sunday on Engadget, always proven to be slower for gadget news. Enjoy the fact that theres something at all to read today.
We have a small pyramid of these in my best buy too, the street date is November 3rd. I think it will be at the $399 Price point.
I already have a 320GB HDD in my 60 gig model so I am golden.
hey loocas
shut up dude
=) Finally. May pick one of these up.
Same here, this really makes me want to buy one now. But I'm willing to wait to see what kind of packages will come out for the holidays.
I prefer my 320g SATA2 drive, thanks. Guess it's a bonus for late adopters who weren't aware that HDD's are a dime a dozen, and take about 5 mins to install.
I purchased one over here in the UK, it was bundled with uncharted 2. The 250GB PS3 plus uncharted 2 bundle was cheaper than getting a 120GB PS3 plus the game separately. Pretty good deal if you ask me. And i didn't have to buy a separate hard drive.
it here already I live in Saudi Arabia and the new slim ps3 250GB is available every where since 15 october.
No wonder they are giving them away free with Bravia tv's again... No reason for upgrade really from my 40gb ps3 that i got 10 months ago with my Bravia tv.

They trying to get rid of the outdated LCDs, no thank you.
@ CaliLove310
Older stock isn't outdated stock.
BIG DEAL it's just a bigger Hard drive
*it's
Man, that is crazy, I'm in AUSTRALIA the technological backwater and I picked up one of these a couple of weeks back because it was on special :S
Technological backwater? Odd, you're closer to Asia than anyone else. Maybe there's a really strong east-west current that steers the gadgets to California.
I have a launch 60g w/ full BC. Swapped for a 320g SATA 2, shortly thereafter. 250g is fine, for most cases, you're right, however, the stock HDD's for PS3's aren't SATA2.
I might pick one of these up -- definitely for the 250gb HDD.
Does the PS3 slim still have the swappable hard drive?
The only thing that confuses me more than why Sony keeps releasing new PS3 models whose only differentiating factor is the hard drive size when the hard drive is the one user-upgradeable part, is why people keep buying them.
let me see.
- new buyers.
- people who don't want to buy a new one, and use the old one as a book end.
there's two reasons, sure there is more.
But, if you were talking about people who already have one, then I'm just as confused too! :P
Oh wait, maybe to get a "FREE" TV and a game in a bundle?
Once again Paul Chapel failes to make a logical point, and this isn't even an Apple product:
"new buyers"
New buyers will buy whatever system there is if they wanted a system. If you only had one or two systems on the market, consumers would buy one of them. There is no need to keep changing minor components up.
" people who don't want to buy a new one, and use the old one as a book end."
How does this make sense at all?
I'm guessing many consumers actually don't know how to swap the hard drive and may not even be aware you can do it. Those who want higher capacity and don't know this will buy it.
Also I don't have one at all and the price looks good for the hard drive space, so I'd say also maybe new buyers who were looking for that one reason to jump. $350 for 250GB looks a lot better than the old $400 for 80GB.
My retailer I work at got a shipment of around 33 of these release date is tuesday 11/3/09
sony stop coping microsoft...:///
I wasn't aware that Microsoft had invented storage devices on gaming consoles. You're right! Sony is copying them! Sue them! Sue them!
copying*
Sony should stop coping with Microsoft? o_O
You do know that the 250GB was found in the FCC database MONTHS before MS came out with their model ... right?
(And would you look at that tipster...what a great dude.)
http://kotaku.com/5340315/is-there-a-250gb-ps3-slim-as-well
What are people loading onto their PS3s that they need 250GB? I'm asking seriously.
nothing. people are just so dumb that they think bigger means better. ohhh 250GB must be worth $100 more than the 120GB of the same damn thing.
@lenarass I had to use multiple translators to try figure out what you said, i still don't know. @ Brex PS3 users have a HD movie store where they can download movies or rent them. That takes up alot of hardrive space. Also full games available for download such as Burnout Paradise take up alot of space too.
60g of music, seasons 1-18 of the simpsons, countless other movies I have archived. Having a 320g HDD simply makes space a non-issue. Additionally, it makes any fragmentation risk minimal, given the amount of space you have available.
@Morne
Or, you know, you can skip the crap and put seasons 3-9 on there
Game saves and game utilities will add up when you play a poo-load of games. That and my entire series of Heroes, Criminal minds, Dexter, The Big bang theory, and Samurai Jack all take up space. Ill need to upgrade up to 500 GB soon from my 320GB.
No worries there mate, Sony doesn't require proprietary HDD's charged at exorbitant prices. Additionally, the PS3 can handle any 2.5" SATA/SATA2 drive on the market...whereas, MS' cannot. In this regard, Sony's lead the consoles, not trailed. Sort of like the option to install games to the HDD...something MS didn't allow you to do for quite some time. Amusing, that one.
"Sort of like the option to install games to the HDD...something MS didn't allow you to do for quite some time. Amusing, that one."
Uh, my PS3 doesn't allow installs. Does yours?
It is quite obvious you don't have a ps3: your avatar, your comments, and your snide remarks about the ps3 all show you really hate it.
I personally found it amusing that you said that the ps3 "allows" game installs to the drive. Just about every game I own for the ps3 forces me to install to the drive. I am glad to know that I can replace the drive at will with another newegg special. You have no choice but to upgrade if you have one of the smaller drives in your system or just delete the stuff you don't use. Then again, you can do the same thing on the 20gb 360 system. Amusing indeed.
It depends on the game. A well crafted game like Valkyria Chronicles has an optional install. The game behaves the same if you do it or not, but is just faster if you opt in for a 4GB install. Sadly, not all games do this, and most will force you to install a big chunk the first time it starts up.
I don't know what's the big deal on PS3 slim with 250GB hard drive? Some of my geek friends claim that they can modify PS3 slim like what Sony did. =) I mean come on, this isn't a new gadget console to make your eyes glued for a while. I wonder who's the anonymous guy who 'wired' this news.
