Adobe engages Apple in passive aggressive warfare with iPhone's Flash message
Adobe's seemingly tried everything in its fight to get Apple to tear down enough development barriers to get Flash ported to the iPhone, culminating in a native compilation option in CS5 that... well, really doesn't solve much of anything. So far, nothing's worked. What's next? Get the masses fired up with some old-fashioned propaganda and let 'em riot down at One Infinite Loop, of course! Visiting Adobe's Flash download page from an iPhone now shows a pretty tersely-worded message informing the user that they're getting short-changed simply by Apple's refusal to budge, so yeah, if you hear an occasional cry of "this is outrageous, I'm writing Apple immediately!" while sitting at an airport gate or a coffee shop, you can safely guess what just happened.

Flash is only as good as the people who code it.
It's very possible to make a lightweight flash app that runs smoothly on low-end hardware and has a very low filesize... IF the developer has coded efficiently, bothered to write garbage collection protocols to avoid eating up RAM, used vectors throughout etc.
However, a lot of flash developers are noobs who haven't even bothered to learn AS3.
Well, it's better than the old one saying that you're running OS X and giving you a download link only to go WTF... it don't download! And then you all go flippin on your iPhone cause it doesn't download anything.
Direct quote from my blonde friend!
symbian does mobile flash and does it quite well. just because u dont get flash on your device doesnt make flash shitty. if apple released flash tomorrow for iphone, u ppl would suddenly rub it in ppls faces how advanced iphone is. dont be a stooge. cant you see that your all like those guys in the 1984 commercial with steve on the screen?
Running Flash apps on my N95 was a battery killer. If that's what you want then that's a-ok with me, and I hope for your sake that Apple brings it to your iPhone. But it sure isn't something I'm asking for.
Apple does not want Flash to work on an IPhone because it would kill a large percentage of the app store, if you could open a bookmark to awesome flash games and applications that people have developed over the past 10 years.
Apple uses "developing for IPhone" as a sales point for their desktops, as well as their own iPhone software.
It's weak, but, so far it's been effective. I'm glad someone's calling them out on this, the end result will be a better iPhone.
Er, no. If that was the case then I very much doubt that Apple would be allowing Flash applications that have been ported to the iPhone OS by Adobe's Flash CS5 entry to the App Store.
There's no need for conspiracy theories. The simple fact of the matter is that Flash blows on the Mac OS and therefore will be terrible on the iPhone (i.e. slow and will run down your battery). Apple doesn't want people complaining about poor performance of web browsing on the iPhone when Flash is going to be problem.
It's basic is that something original and something like a company has a up and down rule that has already been known through out time AND THIS CONFIRMS THAT ALREADY and besides the truth is that "highly advance" also has a up and down and also a certain limit beside letting other companies compete and here's FACT:This extends to further performance degradation than previous flash problems. So no this isn't a crock post. It also goes beyond flash based programs and onto their own software. It's a valid issue,They are applying this policy blindly to Adobe because they don't want to make a work-around just for that one company. And, as you can see, most people think that this is an overly draconian policy.
Sorry, but Adobe already have the platform everybody wants and uses. Their job is to make that available to everybody, which is what they're doing with the Open Screen Project. The only problem here is Apple.WITHOUT any of those things you mentioned is core ignorance.
Good on Adobe. Apple are being idiotic in their closed platform, one-app-at-a-time mindset. Sure, it makes for a phone that's good fun to play with. But there's a difference between "playing around" with a phone, and actually "getting stuff done" with it. And until Apple realises this, their otherwise well-designed products will be shunned by those who invest money in a product that they expect to improve their productivity,if someone was looking to improve productivity while shopping for a phone, they are fools for picking up the iphone in the first place. sure it's a great media device, but it's not a smart phone. if anything, it decreases productivity with over 75,000 useles apps which you can only run one at a time.
if you hate Apples success and the lack of Flash is killing their sales, then you ought to be applauding their great error. Most of these posts sound like Flash developers paranoid they will have to re-tool which ironically would mean (according to other posts) that they would then be able to charge for their free crap sold through the app store
There is so much negativity about flash on here. While I am not surprised, I think most people don't have a complete understanding of how important flash is to the modern internet. Most of our favorite web apps use flash, think hulu, mp3 players, interactive widgets. All of these things use flash and more, plus, flash adds movement and animation to the internet where it could just be static and boring. With that said, I agree that flash is often used obnoxiously and/or wrong and can be quite a burden on the internet experience. With the latest versions of flash that includes more video options as well as a complete overhaul of the scripting language it uses, speed is greatly improved especially with the increased average bandwidth. I guess what I am saying is, flash can be a great tool that can enhance parts of the web and I would like to see it supported on more mobile phones with easy options to turn it on and off (perhaps with a default setting of off and then when you want to view specific flash content you can turn it on easily).
Only two bars...
As usual in this silly debate, when Adobe produces a decent version of Flash for the Mac that isn't a collossal resource hog, then I'd be much more on their side when it comes to the iPhone. In the meantime, however, I'm quite certain that whatever they've concocted for the device will have the performance of an arthritic snail and drain my battery faster than you can say "WT..."
"Part of me wants to join the fight to get Flash on the iPod... but a much larger part of me would rather join Apple and fight to GET FLASH OFF THE DAMN INTERNET ALTOGETHER!"
I can't agree more. First, as all nerds, I haven't learned Flash at school. So because I don't get it means it's crap. On top of that, Flash is totally useless. I mean, who is watching videos on the web those days? Or playing casual games? No one!!! I mean everyone is using Real Player on Opera right? We nerds are always right: http://xkcd.com/619/
Yes I'm sure all those casual games will work SO well on an iPhone interface.
/sarcasm
I'm happy with my Nokia and it's Flash support ;)
Man look at those bars! superior coverage right there
/sarcasm.
Meh the iPhone is dead tech, and was surpassed long ago. Two features will not be enough to keep this glitter phone alive. The Droid and the Pre have already seen to that.
Have you ever actually USED a Pre?! The demo pair they've got in my local O2 shop are are sooo slow & crash-tastic it beggars belief!
what every happned to no app left behind?
So, why isn't Apple's refusal to support Flash in the iPhone's Safari browser considered a violation of antitrust law?
Only Idiots, brainless species etc, could wish Flash.
Only Idiots, brainless species etc, could wish Flash.
I'm all for using Flash on my desktop, but I don't want that junk on my phone.
All of you who are raving about wanting Flash on your phone, what in God's name would you use it for? A touchscreen-only interface (i.e. no mouse hover) and a 320 × 480 px screen resolution? All these wondrous Flash files you want to run on your iPhone are most likely incompatible.
@DarkElfa "Apple won't let you run flash for the same reason the Xbox360 doesn't have a web browser, they don't want you getting video content for free that they charge you for."
In the UK you can already get free video content (by that I mean live TV streaming over 3g) via iphone.tvcatchup.com.
Come on guys, why are you even discussing this. Everybody knows flash is for losers.
