Sony VAIO L touchscreen humiliates presenter on live TV (video)

You know what they say in show biz: never work with children, animals, or gadgets. And if you must, make sure that you test drive your consumer electronics before going live. As you can see in the video (after the break), the kids on one overseas morning show failed to heed the last bit, to humorous results. For our part, we're inclined to believe that the unresponsiveness of the Vaio L All-In-One touchscreen herein is pilot error of some stripe, but either way the man on screen handled it like a real pro. Besides, we've seen far worse bloopers on Japanese television -- really, after the whole Yukio Mishima seppuku mess, it's hard for us to take any of this stuff too seriously. Video(s) after the break.

Don't you hate it when that happens?
I wouldn't know, I've never had a problem performing ;-)
Baka yaro!
Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe he went to Odaiba then zoomed in on the Fuji TV station building. (with rainbow bridge right next to it)
i almost bought this piece of crap
@Badger_badger_badger
You can't mistake that big ball on the roof. Since this is a Fuji TV program I assume it is the building they are recording from.
Duh, it's a Sony product. I'm not surprised it doesn't work.
Vista Pro aka Windows 7 is only good for the comedian show! LOL
What when Phill Collins randomly starts playing? (end of second vid) yeah WTF!
lol @ "なぜ なぜ!”
Well this is the part where you want to melt like a candle, Although.. one may want to applaud the chivalry of the jap-guy still trying to fix the glitch on the vaio..
Anyway, If you think this petty-embarrassment is already a humiliation - then I think you should see how Mr. Ballmer (CEO, Microsoft) handles these type of events with hyper-sense of humor. He laughs too hard, its a bit scary.. but hey - Nice way to cover-up an impending disastrous speech.
It's awesome when it works tbh.
I'm proud of you. :D
Why am I proud of you? Because you have an apple in your profile picture and you complimented the product despite having problems. Why can't everyone be like you?
Yeah, it looked really sweet after they decided to enable the touch interface. ;) Still, having an Android phone and an iPod touch, I learned how nasty the screen looks after a week or so, and forever and ever thereafter until you change the screen protector. It's like someone wiped a bucket of fried chicken on it. Wouldn't want that on my computer.
And the guy in the gray suit and dark tie in the second video was like a Japanese Regis.
Yeah, the map thing is pretty smooth.
That sounds familiar...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KsKKQNZG3rE#t=4m30s
Haha. I'd feel bad if I was on live TV and nothing was working. Now, how long until we get a Mac or Windows comment that isn't even relevant.
Wow, I really wasn't the only guy that thought he looked like Regis!
i have a feeling its from all the bloatware sony puts in their comps...
HAHAHA WINDOWZ FAIL!!!! MAC DA BEST IPHONE #1 ALL THE TIME.
Happy?
:O
D:
>:(
Now now, sodomy with an iphone will solve nothing until it's applied to the source of the problem (Steve Jobs).
You just had to be thatguy
To be honest, I'm not buying all this touch screen for PC... I don't see the efficiency in it. Oh well, at least it's there for those who want it.
I think its more of an addon to an all-in-one PC. Personally I like all-in-ones (Windows based of course), they're clutter free and simple. Although they dont really replace a good old desktop, one would be nice to have in a central location around the house to check email, go on the internet real quick, etc. Quick stuff that touch would do well with you know?
I love how you throw Windows-based in there, for some odd reason of your own.
You never see the efficiency in it till you're just about to use it and realize it's not there. Just this morning I thought to myself, "wish my Tablet PC had a touch screen, too... then I wouldn't need the pen to press Play on my media player."
Man, looking at those icons on that desktop, that PC is loaded with crapware.
Thumbs down.
Least he wasn't using his fingernails like the Microsoft Japan CEO was during the Windows 7 Super Happy Robot presentation.
wow, the guy handled it perfectly on the show. Said the right words apologized at the right times and frankly I think redeemed himself in the 2nd video.
i thought someone played the wallpaper trick on him!
I think somebody pissed off their crew. Props to props.
Its probably because hes a robot.
The other guy did just fine.
In the other video where it is working the PC had been moved. I don't know if you can disable the touchscreen but I'm assuming in the first video it was either turned off of there was some sort of driver problem (I have awful problems with the drivers for my Wacom pen+touch tablet, but then I am using WinXP).
This has happened another time too, and sure enough they were using the vaio L. I'm more inclined to think it's something to do with the vaio then the windows 7. (but of course that kind of logic doesn't work on the internet were fanboys hide)
You think Windows fanboys are bad, wait until you meet Logic Fanboys, they are so hard to argue with...
because iMacs have fully functional touch screen support?
Winblows
Microsoft is laughing stock of software companies
hahahaha!
Well no, they are the 11th most profitable company in the world...
I'm sure Microsoft is crying into their fistfulls upon fistfulls of money.
Bill gates uses 50 dollar bills to wipe 100 dollar bills before he cleans his glasses with them.
i hate when this happens, when you're trying to show off something and all goes wrong lol
A Japanese person befuddled by technology...now I have seen everything...
Have you seen a man eat HIS OWN HEAD!?
KIRF Presenter?
Phil Collins is still big in Japan.
So are Alphaville!
(10 points to anyone who appreciates that, even if they dont find it funny)
TONIGHT!
lol best south park episode ever!
That particular touchscreen is easily interrupted by bright lights. Same screen as on the HP Touchsmart.
huh? light will interfere touch screen?
hmm, i just did an experiment on my ipod touch & my nokia 5800 under a spotlight, besides difficulty on the view due to glaring screen, everything is responsive.
i'll try w/ my friend's HP TouchSmart laptop & AIO tomorrow.
who gets a touchscreen phone these days? touchscreens are so 1965.
That guy looked seriously like Jackie Chan.
The guy at the desk looked like Regis.
I couldn't concentrate on the video after that.
I'm really glad someone else notice japanese regis there too. lol.
Was that a native sony picture app he was using? or is that something in windows 7 touchscreen only?
It is part of the Windows 7 Touch Pack
http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/27/microsoft-touch-pack-brings-surface-experience-to-windows-7/
To be honest a large touch screen doesn't make sense especially in a vertical position. What would make more sense is a 4-5"multi touch touchpad with low quality lcd built in that has the same image showing as the big screen.
No, but neither does Windows. As you can see from any of the videos above or any win 7 multitouch demo video :D
Pain and frustration.
There are also videos of the HP Windows 7 touchscreen doing the same thing. I tired one and it did not work well at all. Typical Microsoft junk. Maybe it will work, maybe it won't. Very Microsoft. Very Windows.
Funny how Windows 7 fails miserably on live TV and Engadget blames the Sony screen.
Fortunately for Sony everyone just blames Windows whenever things go wrong.
Touch screens are extremely unreliable, the ipod has the best touchscreen Ive used and even it doesnt work all the time.
I know, having to load the software that enables touch before it will actually work is just crazy right?
I'm gonna sit here and listen to people frantically wiki'ing - Yukio Mishima.
So is that the Japanese version of Josh Topolsky @ Jimmy Fallon tonight??
yep, thats windows alright!
The touchscreen wasn't turned on....
(in the first one)
LOLZ WINDOWS IZ 4 N00BZ~!~!~!!!! MAC OSX SNOW LEOPARD FTW LOLZ!~!!!!!!
In all seriousness, I don't think is is as much a Windows problem as much as the actual hardware.
Hopefully, they tested this BEFORE they went live.
@SimonTheSnowman
Mind logging into your Mac as guest?
engadget late i saw this atleast a week ago
they should post the one of when the windows Japanese CEO had the same problem
Here it is:
Windows 7 humiliates president of Microsoft Japan
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sYZH-6lyJhU
In the first vid, the female eye-candy -- co-host -- blurted if the panel was chinese...on a live broadcast.
Heh...liked the comment "It's not a Chinese version is it?"
Yep, Japanese company Sony can't be at fault, its the foreign software.
I thought the same thing. Typical...sad...
Poor bastards, touchscreen doesn't work without chicken & cow wallpaper-set, normal people would know
it would be good to have on back up when your mouse is recharging.
What's the name of the cute female host?
Japanese Regis seemed annoyed.
The whole way through I kept thinking - "I thought japanese TV was suppose to be wacky all the time. This looks like Regis and Kelly. Even screwing up and not having the touch screen on seems like something that would happen on regis and kelly. Then when they got it working and they were doing the "ohhh, ahhh" I kept thinking - yep, that's just like when they show off something on regis and kelly.
Have you seen a man eat HIS OWN HEAD!?
@paddyireland
Did you even watch the second video? Douche.
Microsoft
"Messing presentations since 1965."
Poor Miami Dolphins....
Oh gosh, I hope he doesn't suicide
LOL Windows 7 fails yet again!! This is not an issue with the Sony TV, it's Windows 7 failing.
Want proof?? here is another video:
Windaz 7 fails during the "Windows 7 meets Ultra 7" event:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sYZH-6lyJhU&feature=player_embedded
BTW, this video is OLD, it's from LAST WEEK engadget. Where have you been?
I'm glad he finally got it working! I don't want to give up my mouse yet, but I do sort of want all screens to become touchscreens.
Anyone else notice Genesis begin to play at the end of the second video? Win.
It's funny, but it's like watching a Charlie Chaplin movie without the text in-between scenes.
doesn't anyone have subtitles?
window 7 ... hmmmmmm
I have a Windows 7 Vaio FW and a Macbook Pro, and love them both equally. Dolt.
Oh shit. I'm a different Anthony then the one who posted this comment. I'm calling Anthony 1 a dolt. Why the hell do we have the same username. DAMN YOU ANTHONY! THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE! I will slay you and absorb your power now! k, thanks. (Me, Anthony 2 is calling Anthony 1 a dolt, just for the record.)
old is old
Man! I love the way Japanese say Windows 7!
Maybe someone switched to a regular LCD from a touch - kind of like those candles-that-dont-go-out on a birthday cake.
Do the Japanese have the "panels" in all their programming? Even on qvc they have a cute girl and an old man judging?
Still won't beat the guy throwing that wiimote at the TV, showing off those silly plastic attachments.
Didn't understand a word
hai means yes :)
