T-Mobile nabs HTC's Touch HD2, schedules release for November
WinMo folks, we wouldn't blame you for getting a bit of Android envy after last week's DROID onslaught, but if there's one thing that could make people pine for your OS it's HTC's HD2, and T-Mobile has just confirmed it's coming on November 9 -- a mere weekend after Moto's new hotness hits Verizon. Mind you, there is some confusion going on here, as the picture on T-Mo's site is of the old Touch HD, not the HD2 we met and loved, and the mention of "loads of applications to download from Android Market" is particularly perplexing. But, we've been told to go ahead and blame a bumbling marketeer rather than to expect some sort of cross-platform app marketplace love fest -- groovy as that may sound.
Update: We've also just learned that HTC is going to officially launch the HD2 on November 4 ahead of a November 11 release elsewhere. We're not entirely sure what there is left to learn about the thing, but we're always game for another press event.
Update 2: Just to clarify things, this is T-Mobile UK. Also, as many have pointed out in comments, we're now thinking the "09" above means 2009, not November 9, which likely points to a November 11 release. Surely you can swallow that DROID envy for another two days, yeah?

A Dream come true? ... An Android HD2?
Someone in the T-Mobile marketing division just got fired.
Wow is everyone at Engadget a douche? Why do you guys keep taking potshots at WinMo? Did WinMo beat you up when you were a little nerd or something? I can't wait to play with the Droid but I surmise that its really not that much better if at all than any of the existing winmo devices. What is the killer feature that Android has over Windows Mobile? I can't think of any. Software wise they are pretty comparable devices other than the fact that WinMo has WAY more software written for it.
I don't know who Tim Stevens is, but he needs serious work if he's going to be a regular Engadget Blogger.
Everything below here addresses the problems with the specs being wrong, so I'll skip that and mention the biggest problem.
Nowhere in his post does this mention that it's only on T-Mobile UK, *not* T-Mobile USA. On top of that, he continues this trickery by acting like it's now a contest between the HD2 and the Droid, which is a USA only release on a USA only carrier.
So, the two do not connect, and those in the UK have no tough decision between the two phones, since only the HD2 is available there.
Good Lawd Engadget, someone please clean up this post with another update.
(So, I scroll up, and the update 2 is already there. Well, I'm gonna post it anyways!)
Seriously this post was just irresponsible. Comparing two products that aren't even in the same competitive market is just silly.
I get sick and tired of always hearing "I wish it had Android", "Put Android on the HD2/Touch Pro2 and it's an Epic WIN", "WinMo sux!!! iPhone rulz".
I may be an Android Fan, but that doesn't imply that I have an illogical hate for Windows mobile. It has Windows Mobile on people, GET OVER IT!! Honestly, Windows Mobile isn't that bad, but it surely is not perfect(but then again, what is?). You shouldn't always stop on it, as Windows Mobile 7 is on the works. And if its any thing like the Zune HD OS or those early render pics, then its surely a killer.
Just when I thought the writing here couldn't get any worse. Seriously Tim, just delete the whole damn thing and start over. It will be easier for everyone.
are we sure this is even THE HD2? Android market? I know that wrong obviously
3.8 inch? I guess they're talking about the original Touch HD... I don't know something's fishy here
Geez. You people can't even take a joke. I know Android isn't coming on the HD2. I guess I just forgot the tag.
Yeah its very nice that you can download apps for winmo from the android store.... god why cant someone who actually likes and cares about phones write ads?
I mean this in all seriousness, but I've often thought that many of these gadget companie's PR/Ad firms would do well to hire many of the readers of engadget since it seems many of us know more about the products than they do.
rickjamess04, it's rare that I talk to a sales person who know more about their product than I do. Ever been on a car lot and been impressed with the salesman's knowledge? Me neither.
I'd guess "November 09" == "November 2009"
You had to guess?
The original article clearly interprets "November 09" as 9th November.
A dream come true !!! I don't have to wait long to get a Snapdragon baby, and I don't even have to switch providers. Best of all, Windows Mobile on it !! I just hope the prize is right and they don't breaks our hearts like they did with the Pro2.
Ohh nooooo, it is only for T-Mobile UK!!!!!!!!!!!!! :'(
I wish T-Mobile USA got the same phones at the same time than T-Mobile UK
HTC already said the US variant won't be launched until next year.
This phone is sooo nice, it makes win mo look bearable. It wont replace my G1, but it could find a place as my bussiness phone over my bb curve 8520.
Someone in the T-Mobile marketing division just got fired.
t-mobile's general page for WinMo phones does have a rather more plausible photo and specs for the HD2 more in line with those already known...
http://www.t-mobile.co.uk/shop/mobile-phones/phones/windows-mobile-phones/
Thoswe specs are seriously off... 2.8 screen?
Seriously, how hard is it to look at the lower part of the page?!
I thought the HD2 had a 4.3" touchscreen. And download apps from the Android market? Did someone really screw up that bad?
why this is not the hd2 that htc is showing off on its europe website. the other is 4.3" and snapdragon.
OMG!!! I may switch carriers for this one!
And for T-mo USA?
I love Android but I need next-gen hardware not last gen.
I thought it was a 4.3 inch screen. Did Engadget jack up the specs?
T-Mobile FAIL!
No this is just a picture of the HTC Touch HD, but all the specs show that it should be the HD2 launching.
not really because it says the screen is 2.8 on one page than just below that add it has the HD2 saying it has 4.3 but then if you click 'coming soon' it says it's 3.8....
What a let down. The link is to the UK site... TMo outside the US gets great phones already so whats the big news there. Its in he US that it seriously lags behind its competitors... in terms of handsets. They spend a lot and get great accolades for customer service. i still remember when i moved to ATT from TMO i was shocked to learn that customer service is closed on weekends... They need to learn that handsets get new customers and not just customer service.
Thanks for getting me all worked up for a moment... and PS: Tmo needs to hire a new product manager...specs are pretty much all wrong
T-MO? I need 3G is it possible to put AT@T service on this phone?
You could use it on ATT with your sim if you get it unlocked, but you will only get Edge (2G)
Depends on if the frequency specs stays the same as the EU model. It will work on AT&T GSM/EDGE but if it doesn't support 850/1900mhz UMTS/HSPA, then you will not get 3G on AT&T. If it does, then I know at least 7 to 8 PPL with AT&T that would get it including me...
This phone is coming to america with 3G in Q1 of 2010 wait it out it's worth it...
Pretty odd that there is a Andorid market on a windows phone ? See right comment by t-mobile
This is crazy! Are the phone companies getting better at hiding the phones they release or did Apple make them finally get off their A - - and start producing phones faster? I remember waiting years for phones to get out the door and now they show up in a couple months!
So i don't get it is this for t-mo USA or Tmo UK?
This is old news we knew T-Mo UK was getting the HD2. When it comes to the USA... that WILL BE NEWS!!! 3.8" screen? not 4.3"?
If/When this phone comes to the states, I'm paying the early termination fee (if it doesn't come to at&t) and jumping ship!
I'll let at&t have all the stupid iphones they want. At&t, you better get off your a&& and get some MODERN phones and give up on the stupid iphony. Your gonna be losing a TON of subscribers once the iPhone hits other carriers!
UGH. UGH.
This ad brings all sorts of confusion and let down! :-/
While we are talking about "some confusion going on here".. how about taking some blame yourself in (still) not clarifying that this is for T-Mob UK, and not for the US, which it's likely that 90% of the people are thinking, until leaving your site to check.
I'd definitely leave AT&T for T-Mob for this thing.
Bingo. Not a hard distinction to make Tim.
Great, now I have to change my pants, and it's not for a good reason. Thanks alot, Engadget. Maybe tell the whole story next time.
"We're not entirely sure what there is left to learn about the thing," Well maybe multi-touch in every application: http://www.mobiletechworld.com/2009/11/02/system-wide-multi-touch-support-on-the-htc-hd2/
why does it say android?
Great job on printing old news asshats. I've noticed the article quality deteriorating for a while, but come on...you MIGHT want to have thrown in the tiny bit that this is the UK. In other useless news nobody cares about...
"In other useless news nobody cares about..."
Nobody cares about? apart from 60 million people in the UK!!
I'm on Tmo, I'm eligible for an upgrade, I am seriously thrilled atm :)
This is the nicest phone I've seen yet from HTC. I'd probably prefer it over the iphone. It is a shame I'm on Sprint since Sprint doesn't even have it on their roadmap.
If it gets CDMA I think Sprint will have it; this is the kind of mojo they need, along with a little Android, to maintain their momentum. (Fingers crossed...)
I should clarify, not Android on the HD2, but Android devices. Personally I’m in the WinMo camp.
While Sprint NEEDS something like the HD2 as their pixi crap doesn't do much for most, they currently haven't even approached HTC about a CDMA version, if you look at buzz about wireless, several of us including myself verified with HTC about a cdma version - not even in the works as Sprint hasn't asked for it yet. Owens, a VP of marketting for Sprint wasn't thrilled about all the requests about the HD2 so he just kept replying to all questions about the moment which didn't exactly meet our demands for a good phone. It isn't just about the OS, I might consider Droid 2.0 but the hardware is just as important and no droid out there has all of the hardware features of the HD2.
Lots of FAIL in T-mo's website if that's what they're reporting for specs
Either that or everyone's been lied to for quite a while
And I bet this is Euro release only for now
Does T-Mobile mean they are selling the HTC Touch 2 now, but in the other box below they are saying that the Touch HD2 is coming soon?
Engadget should prob make it more clear that this isn't for TMo USA.
Hmmm.. what's the source on this? The screen size for the HD2 is 4.3" and definitely no Android integration.
Actually, that looks like the Imagio in the picture.. still the wrong screen size though.
I think they have the touch2 not the HD2, as we're being led to believe.
this was a good post by T-mo's part. They literally got everything wrong
Maybe change the title of the post to indicate this is for the UK so as to not get the primarily US audience here all worked up?
Engadget needs to get in gear and delineate when they mean T-Mobile.....if they mean TMo UK, TMo DE, or TMo USA........what a rip...and here I thought TMo USA was FINALLY going to get a handset worthwhile to leapfrog over all the chaff handsets ( including the Cliq ) available now. Something finally worth the $$$ I have to dish out and becoming back under contract after not being under contract for 8+ years. But no......thanks for the Trick or Treat, Engadget.
>T-Mobile
:D
>UK

people make mistakes. a correction has been posted.
that said.
JOUR NA LISM
It would behoove the entire staff to take a night class.
Though that could be said of most "writers" now.
yes!!!! another reason to believe that the HD2 will come to AT&T
Ahh!! Why wont engadget read my emails! I sent them links to a price comparison website that had prices for the HD2 for both T-Mobile AND Vodafone and that it was going to be released on the 11th November. Should i email them again?
My bad, i thought this was the HD2, but still, i emailed them about what i said and they've not acted on it.
Isn't TmobileUSA cdma only? So that would mean no SIM cards?
This is the Touch HD in the picture which released last year. Not the Touch HD2. It says 3.8" screen, which is the Touch HD's size, also it runs on Windows Mobile.
I'm confused.
This is the worst article ever. Fail. Fail. Fail.
Ahahhahh, keep telling yourself that...as I upgrade my G1 to yet a newer more robust Adroid rom...I love the smell of freedom!
This is the original HTC Touch HD (HTC Blackstone) , not the HD2 (Leo) :P
Screenshot is of touch HD, specs are of Touch HD, its the 1st HD
For some reason T-Mobile seems the need to release the older model even though the new one was just released.
I mean, come on, its like releasing the touch pro when theres a touch pro 2 out :P
THIS is the phone they will be releasing as the "HD2": http://www.htc.com/www/product/touchhd/specification.html
and THIS is the REAL HD2: http://www.htc.com/www/product/hd2/specification.html
just a bit of a difference, isnt there? ;)
It's clearly both...
