There's no stopping the eternal tug-of-war between the
powers that be and
the hackers that will, and for the time being it looks like things are back in the hands of the hackers. As of noon today giddy jailbreakers can take the next step and go full-on with blacksn0w, the unlock for the latest 05.11.07 baseband (with tethering enabled to boot). And if that weren't enough, it looks like blackra1n RC3 is alive as well, with Mac and Windows support. What are you waiting for? Hit the read link to get started, if that's your thing. And the battle for the iPhone's immortal soul continues...
geohot is a genius!
And he's so hot!
Creepy man, assuming you're a man..
Dutch hacker holds jailbroken iPhones “hostage” for €5. ;)
Here is a guide on how to install it:
http://www.iphoneos3.com/2009/11/03/download-and-install-blacksn0w-for-iphone-3g-or-iphone-3gs-3-1-2/
Harry Potter has done it again!
I agree, he's hot. Grow up Karim.
I think he's from the future
I just realized he works for Apple, hence the break apart. I just ran BlackRain and the first thing it does is download your phone statistics and presumable collects/emails them.
Blackn0w singing in the dead of night..
take these unlocked phones and learn to call...
all your life, you were only waiting for this moment to arrive
Uh... Oh, it's 'black snow'. Never mind.
@josh DMT trip?
actually, I meant 'black now'
I'll take bets on how long it'll take until "An update for your iPhone is available". :)
Where have you been - this is nothing new. It's been going on for 2+ years - back and forth.
you missed his point, calm down. *pats head*
Done and Donated!! This guy is awesomeness personified!
Unlocked iPhones FOAR EVERYWUN!!!
is this another app I can get for my iPhone? I'm trying to collect them all
Blackra1n is awesome. Worked flawlessly for my 3GS at 3.1.2. Props to him and I definitely donated!!
so update through iTunes with a 3GS and i'll be able to keep my t-mo? (after the blackra1n of course)
If the new version unlocks it then yes. I have 3.1.2 on ATT and it works perfect. I don't know about T-Mobile, but according to the original post the new Blackra1n should unlock it...
yep, works on T-mo
as always, just make sure you disable 3G in the settings app
Can anyone link me to a walkthrough on how to jailbreak my phone? This is my first iphone and my first attempt at jailbreaking. I'm dying to get soem custome themes and backgrounder...
Ah, just re-read the article. So this is Unlock only... no jailbreak yet?
Blackra1n.com? Click? Follow on-screen instructions.
Unfortunately I can't open the link from work (blocked), but reading around I don't really understand it all. I've seen people talk about getting stuck with tethered jailbreaks and some seem to indicate that that is what happens if you jailbreak from the current firmware version, rather than updating your previously jailbroken phone.
I don't want to bother trying this if I'm going to have to constantly plug my phone into my computer.
Are you a law-enforcement agent?
http://blog.iphone-dev.org/post/211802082/pwnage-pie
Dig thru this page/ site.
Heck no. I'm just a noob that has no clue about what I'm doing. I have a friend that could probably jailbreak the phone for me but he has a track record of breaking the electronics he is working on (he managed to blow out his tv and sound system while modding an xbox).
@Richard -
The process is much easier than it was a couple of years ago - but it is not for the lazy. You can seriously mess up yore phone.
Read - Read - Read - Read - Read - Read - Read - Read - before you do anything!
Most folks get stuck as a result of not paying attention to the process. Depending on what you are doing - usually it's fixable - except where the Mod Groups specify. the last time I update my iPhone from 2.x to 3.0 - I got stuck a few times - the update was fine and I had full access to my phone and content - but couldn't make any phone calls - setting in the software during the process - redid it and it worked.
Good luck!
Yeah - good friend [hopefully] but that sounds like my brother. Kidding about the cop question - no offense.
Just read until you feel like you really understand what you are doing.
You have to re-Jailbreak when you upgrade from one version to the next. So I've done it 2 times. First when I got my phone and next when the 3.0 came out - same process - but I paid more attention the 2nd time around.
Literally one click with blackrain. It loads up says [Make It Rain] click and its done. You even get to look at the devs face while it reboots. Then go in, you see a new icon everything else is the same. if you dont do anything at this point its pretty much useless. Install one of the installers, and go.
time to round them up and put them in Jail, let's see them try to break out of a real Jail!
Let see you not get Ranked Down into Oblivion!
@Name:
but i can't see anything above your comment........
nope, you will be ranked down into oblivion!
will jailbreaking my iphone with this application still allow me to receive apple software updates successfully?
Be more specific!
Updates to the iPhone Software - YES - but you will relock your phone and have to 'jailbreak' again.
Updates to various installed Apps - YES - no harm.
ah noobs.
It's pretty sad when a second-class hacker needs to copy the naming convention of the primary iphone hacking group. I mean Blackra1n was bad enough - but at least it was more subtle.
Whatever - I'm sticking with the Dev Team and their goods.
Second-class? You do realize geohot was the first to unlock an iPhone at all, and was a member of the Dev Team for awhile until he went solo?
The biggest thing I hate about the iPhone hacking scene is all of the goddamned infighting. Fortunately, it's calmed down to the point where pretty much all parties involved are willing to coexist relatively peacefully, building off of each other's work. greenpois0n, the latest Dev Team unlock, was based on an exploit found by geohot (although the Dev Team found it independently as well). Though there may be some bad blood between the groups, at least we aren't back in the days of the iPhone Dev vs. iPhone Elite teams and the other absurd wackiness that went on in the early days of this scene...
Christ, scenesters can be ridiculous - makes me thank God that the webOS community dodged that bullet by siding with a fully open standard-bearer, instead of devolving to cyber turf war like the iPhone and PSP scenes have went through during their histories...
If the Dev team found it independently - then it is not in fact based off of geohot's exploit. Besides - if you go digging - the Dev Team had in fact already found it - before geohot outed his release - except they were waiting on the Yellowsn0w fix to release everything at once.
Tehn a couple of days after goehot put theirs out - the Dev Team went ahead - because they realized it was the same thing.
Get over yourself.
iphone nerd wars...lulz!
This is a serious question as I haven't jailbroke since back in 2.0something. What features besides tethering can we get in JB rather than stock? I use to use VLC a little and it was cool for about a week having Quake on my phone but that was about all I did.
support for newer legit apps
Limited multi-tasking is the killer app for me - using Backgrounder, you can keep any app (App Store or otherwise) running while switching to another, allowing me to, for instance, keep Opie & Anthony playing in the the Sirius-XM app while I surf the web in Safari. It's not perfect - you have to watch how much memory you have left, because if you run low, the OS will automatically close apps open in the background to recover memory; and not all apps work correctly in the background because the way it's implemented is meant to fool the app into thinking it's still running in the foreground - but the pros far outweigh the cons for me.
Customization is another big boon for jailbreaking - not just skinning with WinterBoard, but other features like enabling the battery % counter on non-3GS devices, showing the date and free RAM next to the time in the status bar, showing more apps per SpringBoard page, etc. I don't want to be limited to what Apple says I should use, so I jailbreak to customize my device to MY needs, not Steve Jobs' needs.
This is an example of being able to do your own customisation stuff:
http://i586.photobucket.com/albums/ss301/rezaudio/iPhonehomescreen.png
just did this and it worked spiffingly. all credit to gehot, he is pretty talented.
did it hack the phone so it can tether?
i've tried so many times using blackra1n, but seems like not working for my iphone 3G, the screen still showing USB plug to itunes...
How can i Jailbreak it..?
i was upgraded thru itunes lately...
Should have named it Ch0c0lat3 R@1n
Why exactly does Frodo unlock iPhones, anyway? Is Arda such a boring place?
because, one does not simply AT&T into Mordor.
How is the tethering going to work? same method as using the http://benm.at or will i need to do more work in order for it to work?
"the eternal tug-of-war between the powers that be and the hackers that will"
I feel a rap comin' on!
I used Blackra1n on my 3GS when it was unlocked. Tysiphonehelp said not to do it when its unlocked. I now have a 3GS stuck in recovery mode. Should i restore in iTunes, use Blackra1n to jailbreak, and then Blacksn0w to unlock?
PLEASE PLEASE ANSWER!!
Yep,
that should fix your problems
Im sending this dude a crisp $20 that was SO painless and easy!!!!!
This should give my 3GS some additional eBay value when I list it after the Droid comes out.
No thanks i rather a secure iphone and also support the developers by actually *GASP* paying for the apps, imagine that.
jailbreaking doesn't always = stealing apps. I personally DONT steal apps (not one stolen app on my phone). I USED to.. i don't anymore. BUT.. i love quickdismiss, lockinfo with the gruppled theme, weather icon, winterboard and a ton of other third party apps (google voice for instance) that only run from 3rd party sources.
Nothing I'm currently using my phone for is illegal.
Same here. Jailbreaking my iPhone allowed me to add additional functionality that Apple/ ATT do not implement. Which in turn does not hinder the main abilities of the phone. For example - I have an App that allow for Menu Bar style Alerts that show up at the top of my phone for new eMail - new Calls - new Messages and so on. I have the Date added up there so I don't have to back out to the lock screen or pull up the Calendar to see it.
I have also customized the look of the interface in places as I get bored with the visuals from time to time.
I've been modding the system of my desktops for years and I never had to 'jailbreak' them in order to do it - simply had to know where the files were and how to modify them. the same thing applies to the iPhone - since Apple is touting it as basically a handheld running a desktop system - I should be able to modify my own phone how I see fit.
I did this with my RAZR when it was the hot thing.
But yeah - jailbreaking does not mean simply running illegal software.
Also - I forget what it's called [SBSettings - i think] allows you a quick access to enabling or disabling ceratin features like Location Services or the WiFi without having to dig thru the System Settings constantly.
Not to mention being jailbroken provides additional security, blocking the data mining those paid apps you speak of don't tell you they're taking.
Such as your age / sex / location / use of app / etc.
Jailbreaking is all around a great thing, that is, if you don't screw up your phone by deleting files it needs to work ;)
what happens to my 2g now??.. pls dont tell me their killing off support for it!
@shad0w does blackra1n work on 2g?
Not trying to ask a dumb question, but why exactly do this? Do you get to personalize the phone more, what are the benefits? Is it only for people not using the AT&T network?
backgrounder
tethering
SBSettings
backgrounder
lockscreen widgets
sweet little hacks to apps like Maps Enhancer, QuickScroll, Custom HomeButton, and iHandy
backgrounder
Google that stuff. And that's why in a month, I'll be an Android user. I'm tired of Apple's attempt to dominate what I do with my phone. And Verizon's coverage is so much better than ATT's.
Is an iPod 3G 3.1.1 jailbreak available yet?
What's with that graphic? Is that a Caravaggio in the background? I don't get the relation...
Does work on the 2g iphone as well for 3.1.2?
geohot > devteam.
goehot > devteam
apple > microsoft
nike > reebok
nyt > wsj
ford > chevy
pepsi > Coke
whatever.
phillies>yankees
@ your apple > Microsoft comment = fail > uberfu.
From what I am reading it looks like this is only for jailbreaking all 3 iphones but if you want to unlock the 2g you have to stick with the custom firmware route
Any idea on how to get tethering working? Rebooted after blacksn0w and no luck.
Great...after popping in a T-Mobile, then switching back to AT&T, my WiFi doesn't detect access points anymore..
reset your network settings
Settings.app --> General ---> Reset ---> RESET NETWORK SETTINGS
that should fix it
Is there any advantage in upgrading than JB my iPhone with blackrain? I have a JB 3.0 already so is this even worth it plus what happens to all my apps like 3g unrestricter that I have installed already? Would I have to download them all again?
I hve a JB 3.0, So do I DL blackra!n before or after the update to 3.1?
Make sure your back up your Cydia stuff with AptBackup sync with iTunes to save the backup then fresh restore to 3.0 firmware then upgrade to 3.1.2. Then download the blackra1n from his site for your OS then follow the instructions on how to. Easy pezy.
Thank you so much Jimbo!
i can haz native tethering? If so how?
Don't forget to change your root password all.
how do you enable tethering with the jailbreak?
I would love to know that too ..
anyone ?
What you can do is open Cydia and add the repo SiNfuL iPhone Repo: http://sinfuliphonerepo.com to your sources. Then there are packages called Enable Tethering for 3G or 3GS based on your phone. Just install one of those and you should be good to go. You may have to power down and back in order to get it to work.
Worked just fine on my iPhone 3GS 32GB....
Funny, I'm going to do the exact same thing after I get my DROID.
Oops. That was supposed to be a reply to the post above re:eBaying iPhone after getting a DROID.
So many thieves posting here. Rank my post down all you want. You are still thieves.
How so please explain?
Hey guys guess what, there's no need to jailbreak a Droid because you'll be able to run whatever you want on it.
Oh no, watch me get downranked just like the iphoners in the droid comment section
i've tried all kinds of geekCPR and nada my friends, it just keeps going back to Frodo's face and the loading circle freezes
:'0(
yeah my iphone is a nice paperweight now, thanks engadget ;0)
16Gb iPhone 3G R. I. P. Nov 23th '08 - Nov 3rd '09
Are you sure?
