T-Mobile USA down all over the place? (update: yes)
We're getting reports from sea to shining sea this evening that T-Mobile service is down or intermittent on both voice and data -- particularly bad timing in light of the recent Sidekick drama. We've tested in New York and it's definitely down for us -- both voice and data -- so how's service treating everyone out there?[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]
Update: We just got an official statement from T-Mobile, and it's confirmed -- service is down. Here's the statement:
Update 2: All service is now restored, according to the company -- they say about 5 percent of users were affected by the outage, though circumstantial evidence would certainly suggest that the number is higher (especially considering that New York City was one of the dead zones)."T-Mobile customers may be experiencing service disruptions impacting voice and data. Our rapid response teams have been mobilized to restore service as quickly as possible. We will provide updates as more information is available."

IT CANT BREATHE!! MY PHONE CANT BREATHE!!!!
All good here.
by the way i find that picture strangely arousing...
(ill be seeing my doctor thursday)
how could this happen? i understand when service goes down because of a damage cell tower but what is powerful enough to knock out service for most of the nation?
are we dear i say.....being invaded and t-mobile is the 1st carrier to be knocked down?
Apple did it!
Down hear in Kansas City!! Phone still says Tmobile but can't call most numbers
It just happens that my T-Mobile UK phone isn't working at the moment either, http://amirite.net ?
:/
AT&T Queens, NY.. working
Strange. Mine (and everybody I know on Tmobile) was up and down for four hours yesterday evening around this time. Working okay for now, though.
LOLOL
I was in a kroger signature that somehow always blocks cell signal in their store. So when I left, I thought they stole my 3gz! Damn you TMo!
Hahaha... I love how John Galt is commenting on this

I knew I should have gone with engadgeT mobile...
EVERYONE RELAX!! I can't say how I know, but they are turning on NATIONWIDE 3G all over the country and its just messy at the moment.
@Gad Get
Well it certainly wasn't Microsoft, though I do wonder if this is another 'inside job'?
SHHHHHHH!! PROJECT DARK IS IN EFFECT!!!
We better get a free month because of this....
Can't send or receive texts... Colorado
or at least a free dinner with zeta-jones. Now.
wtf t-mobile, you are so right Banikid. i taught i was tripping but Engadget can to the rescue
Because your service was down for one evening you better get a free month? Relax a little bit dude, if this is a persisting problem then yeah, I agree, but for one night of interruptions after how many years of no interruptions and you're bitching?
Unless your comment all just a joke because of the sidekick crap and I completely missed it.
It's a huge problem! Imagine if tens millions of T-Mobile users can't call 911...?!
@Jordan
Tmobile subscribers, just like all people who pay for their cell phone, have to pay a lot of money yearly to the big wireless companies for their service. When they have constant commercials boasting their coverage and ability to perform as a carrier, nationwide outages are unacceptable. Why is it only Tmobile has this big of a problem when making the 3G switch (if that really is the cause...).
@Greg,
Not sure how it works over there, but if someone calls the emergency service here in Aus (000) on a mobile, it will put them through to ANY network the phone can read.
Hopefully it is the same over there :)
@Jordan My data coverage has been down for a week! So it just is not one evening. Although, I do enjoy meeting their customer care reps! (JK)
@copeys: Makes sense, but only AT&T is also GSM here, and Tmo and AT&T don't (necessarily) work on the same frequencies, although they *sometimes* can. Basically, it's iffy, and you're unlikely to have the right frequencies enabled on your phone, unless you have a quad-band phone... which only a minority actually have.
@greg: 90% or more of US GSM phones have 850 and 1900 GSM. tri-band or even quad-band are normal for the GSM radio, just not UMTS.
I just switched to TMo last month. I was actually pleasantly surprised by the signal strength in my area -- it beat ATT's and my calls were coming in clearer. I thought my phone was malfunctioning yesterday.
This right on the heels of the sidekick screwup is pretty frakking remarkable. Does TMo have redundancy for anything? What if something happens to zeta-jones?
Fail.
EPIC FAIL!!
This isn't 2007, saying fail is Internet equivalent of what WAAZZZUP or W.W.J.D. was to 1999.
You don't control these things Zavrion.
2012
Epic Zavrion aka Epic Fail. use through 2010
Since Tmo's customer service is best rated, this is good for the haters:
My phone (east coast #) calling my main office (west coast #) works just fine. No interruptions here and I get 3G on my G1.
Overhyped? Possibly... AT&T/Engadget, if you can't beat down Verizon/Droid, might as well beat down his little brother... tsk tsk.
I guess this is what they meant by "project dark"?
I have been able to call my friends on different networks here in Denver.
This post was low ranked just now, now it's neutral. I didn't know posts can rise from the grave?
Down in the Los Angeles area...
Gardena, CA. It was down for the first 3 calls I tried. I thought it was my prepaid phone problem. It worked at 4th try.
Up in Westwood/UCLA. I've tried to call like five people in Chicago and they're totally down though.
Burbank, studios OK here... 3G made calls and everything..., then I have a east coast area code phone...
Calls and data are working near university park, but my clock is set to mountain time zone if I set in network mode. I got up an hour early because of that!
Mine, my brothers, and both my roommates are all out of service when trying to call or text to other tmobile phones but when I call other carriers it works fine... TMOBILE SUCKS!!!
What was your first clue?
I second that.
just called my brother who is on T-Mo.
works fine.... *shrugs*
all good in south florida
All good in central Florida, too.
