Apple 'Grab & Go' sync patent application features... Engadget
Apple's applied for and gotten a ton of patents this year, and while most of them are fairly boring, we're intrigued by this recently-revealed application for a "Grab & Go" sync system -- and not just because one of the diagrams references Engadget. The idea is to simplify sync by pre-packaging sets of data into categories like family, business, and entertainment that a user could just grab, as well as make sharing files between devices like phones, computers, and even game consoles much easier. The software can adapt to fit multiple connection types and add various levels of encryption and security, including requiring devices to be in close proximity to each other in order to sync. All in all, it sounds like a solid evolutionary addition to MobileMe, and we're curious to see if any of this ever ships -- the patent application was just made public, so it could be a while.

i'm waiting for someone to say that this is somehow not tech news
is this news!???
I'm waiting for someone to say what's special vis-a-vis Engadget and July 14, 2008.
Well, the DATE is in the image.. someone look it up to see what the POST is!!
I'm happy all your years of ass munching have finally paid off. I really am happy for you guys.
Did not see anything with this exact timestamp, but they came real close to giving this to Microsoft:

Being able to store/download/access files from my iPhone (ie: an accessible file system of any kind) is one of my 3 remaining complaints against the iPhone. In all, the complaints are now:
1. TETHERING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (yes, AT&T is at fault - but I don't care).
2. Adobe Flash (as a web developer, I LOATHE Flash - but I still want it on my damn phone).
3. Native file system/ability to copy files onto/off of the phone via USB and even view some (documents, etc).
I use AirSharing Pro for #3 currently, but native support would be nice.
Oh, and some of that free Google Navigation action too, please. TomTom can go fuck themselves in their greedy, sandy assholes.
Well, it is more like apple's way of saying "Thank you".
loyalty finally paid off ! go on macgadget~ !
Man, who'd you have to blow to get that!
Apple must be trying to win you guys over. /s
Congratulations.
I'm not sure you can expect the same treatment on the next WinMo patent filing. ;)
i was curious, so, this would have been the top article if they visited engadget at that time:
http://www.engadget.com/2008/07/14/lucid-logix-hydra-tech-brings-together-any-gpus-for-powerful-mat/
Sooo they are trying to patent file and directory permissions? Or are they trying to patent the tarball?
as if it wasn't obvious before...
Apple is just returning the favor. : )
No way. See that 666 pointed at the Engadget? It's obvious Apple secretly hates them.
Oh and Google, web pages, and YouTube...
gizmodo is going to go all anti-apple now.
"you scratch my ass, I scratch yours" I know is supposed to read "back" but given the relationship at display here, ass makes more sense!
Nah, I reckon it was an internal marketing decision by Apple. "Hey how do we make more news regarding all our stuff", "Why not use tech news site links on our patent images, they won't be able to help themselves"
I also ponder the 666, information is evil perhaps, since all the links are labelled such?
hmm ... why I'm not surprised?
OMG! Proof that Engadget is in Apple's pocket!!!
Then why are you visiting Apple's pocket? Because you obviously hate Apple.
Paddy meet sarcasm. Sarcasm, paddy.
.......I don't like Sarcasm. Get him Away! Get him Away!
he was looking for Steve Job's hair...
Yes, but it clearly show that they are history. :)
you can tell it's older by the round calculator buttons
Confirmed! Steve Jobs is Editor-in-Chief at Engadget!
Confirmed, Every Villain Is Lemons
Confirmed, lemons is every villain!
Hmmmmm
Is that cat wearing French Bread as a hat?
@tikiteko
Confirmed, Its a cat sandwich...Duh;P
For the less cultured, Every Villain Is Lemons or EVIL is a Spongebob reference
All that sucking up to Apple has finally paid off Engadget! ;)
I think Apples are really hard to suck - unless you have a humongous mouth.
"Grab and go" was inspired by the recent smash and grab at the apple store in NJ.
Fail. i meant to comment on the comment about the title of the app. =(
You took the words right out of my mouth. Word for word.
And there it is...as if we needed ANY more proof that Engadget is at least funded by Apple....this is just the ultimate proof.
You seem to be confused about a couple of things. Specifically, the meanings of the words "ultimate" and "proof".
what sort of black magic is this? " grab and go" thats two tasks so it can't be done on the iphone.
it is the next iPhone's new feature: bi-tasking.
The "black magic" might explain why there are 666's all over the diagram.
lol ^^^above trifecta FTW
Yes, which is why the iPod app can't run in the background.
Oh wait... yes it can. And you can get mail in the background, and you can load web pages in the background, and you can get phone calls while you're doing something else, and the list just keeps on going.
You people have never actually used an iPhone before, have you?
Which is why Spotify runs in the backgrou...oh wait.
@Jack
I'm impressed. My ugly horrible old K800i can play music while I check emails and messages on it or use the internet, and I'll still receive calls. I guess the iPhone is batting at the remarkable level of the Sony Ericcson K800, in terms of multitasking.
Wait, hang on, this ugly crappy old phone has got this minimise feature, so I can load multiple apps at a time. Huh.
Or...it's proof that Engadget is one of the leading sources for technology news.
heresy!
Finally someone with 500 mg of common sense.
@ micheal
Well put.
Looks to me that they are saying that Engadget is evil...
smells like AvantGo
this apple patent idea is a dud there' s hardly any merit or originality in this idea as it's a copy of some prior art but made for iPhone and it's not original but the engadget link is good.
Hot macaroni! First, soy gives you man boobs, now this?! What is next? In what kind of twisted world do we live?
***It just proves how popular and prominent this post is in the Tech Community*** Archos has also made direct references to Engadget in their products *** Comment not valid in Hawaii, Alaska, Puerto Rico, and Vermont *** inGadget would sound something Verizonish instead of Applish so refrain from making the comment *** I also like potatoes and I think Jessica Alba is very hot ***
...and that's the sound of the collective squee at the engadget HQ
This somehow doesn't look like an iphone image? I mean, it probably is... but something about the conceptual screen size looks wider and shorter than an iphone screen.
Yeah... i just compared it to an iphone screencap, and scaled to the right height, the screen is about a quarter screen wider.
Is this usual for iphone conceptual UIs, or is there something brewing?
The only thing brewing here is coffee. Want some crumpets?
its a drawing!!
See: Google Patents. There are thousands of drawings not entirely to scale.
Must break comment cycle. Everyone posting same comment in different words.
Y'all can suck it! :)
You sir have an oral fixation .... you certainly did not advanced to the Freud's anal stage....
The amount of stupid generalised patents be allowed to go through from apple is getting beyond a joke, this type of thing covers so much outside the iPhone that it will give apple a tone of unnerved patent infringement money for a lot of real innovators.
You should reject them for using the word "Engadget"
lol!
PLEASE NILAY, PLEASE DO IT!
Dude! They just patented you GD NAME!
SUE THEIR ASSES!
^
This.
They knew you guys were going to snoop around their patent filings anyways, might as well give a shout-out =)
Pretty neat. This would essentially be allowing a corporate feature to trickle down to the consumer level, in line with what apple did with mobile.
lets just hope they don't botch this one.
Say what? Care to explain ?
SAT Question of the day:
Fox News : Republic Party :: Engadget :
A.) Google
B.) KIRFs
C.) Joshua Topolsky
D.) Apple
e) b, c, and d
Damn Republic PARTY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11
DAMN YOU ALL TO HELL
I'd certainly love a way to sync a few albums onto my iPhone without spending 10 minutes backing it up first.
Reminds me of this:
http://www.teehanlax.com/blog/?p=1893
Hmmm...
(referring to the second picture, not the actual syncing stuff btw)
The entire staff at engadget just got wet.
haven't read the application, but how is this different from any number of synching applications that let you synch only updates to, say your calendar or contacts? Prior art has to get this denied.
Then maybe you should read the application.
Sounds like SOMEBODY is getting more free Macbooks!
Seriously, last time I called Engadget out I got banned from Engadget. New account FTW.
ban him!
Am I the only one who noticed that the 1 number that appears more than any other in this picture is "666"?
=O
I bet this got the engadget staff all moist
Jimmy Fallon is gonna downrank you for using the word "moist"
What this looks like is an endaround the request for access to the file system or disk mode. A user can put files, media, and bookmarks into the "Grab 'n Go" repository. Apple gives users direct access to files through an app with a cloud sync bonus, but also maintains security.
Another thing a little more curious is that Apple could easily compile usage data from this app and sell it to content providers, giving them very detailed data about how, when, and where media is consumed. Right now iPod/iTunes is not terribly sophisticated since stuff is either watched or unwatched with a play count.
All of you have only seen that Apple has Engadget in their patent... but have you noticed they tagged them with a 666 ??? Look at that picture!!! BURN IT!
"The software can adapt..."
Apple has devs working to fix that.
Big brother is always watching

i laughed out loud. :/
"the patent application was just made public, so it could be a while" -- Not necessarily. It's not uncommon to write the code first and then realize it's patentable.
Wonder who will be the first to review the grab and go feature once its released? I'm guessing engadget
The irony is the number of people who feel compelled to visit, read, and post on a site and entry that they obviously hate. That fact that there are so many unrelated whiny posts, just like this one, proves that the reporting is actually quite balanced otherwise you would just leave. Most the patents I've explored tell more about the individual heading up the patent than the company that provided the opportunity.
This is what they call in the adult business a "reach around".
isn't this called AvantGo and come out in 95 or 96?
