China bans corporal punishment in internet rehab, UK and USA open up their own clinics
China's, how to say this, unorthodox rehabilitation methods, which involve "beating and confinement" of internet addicts, have finally been fully outlawed. Following the death of one teenager due to the treatment he received at an addiction camp, the Chinese Health Ministry has come out with a statement to say corporal punishment and methods restricting personal freedom "are strictly forbidden." In the meantime, the UK and USA are playing catch-up by opening up their own computer addiction camps, which have been described as residential internet detox clinics. Their genius ploy to get you off the web juice has been to go cold turkey and teach people to do chores as a distraction (really, chores and boredom are the cure and not the disease?). The British version even has a 12-step program, but we advise doing what we all did -- if you find yourself spending most of your time on the internet, just become a full-time blogger.Read - China bans tough treatment of young Web addicts

If china more open up in freedom of speech, then their young people don't had to suffer stay in the computer room all days.
Interesting observation..
If we take care even a bit of our kids over-freedom of internet/computer nonsenses, we wouldn't have so many scientists/engineers/rearchers replacing by generally knowledge and mathematically superior Chinese kids.
Has anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do more like?
@Richard
if america more improve education, then their young people don't had to suffer lack of english speak all days
between Richard and jad, it was just painful to read these comments. Perhaps the result of too much internet? If you're learning grammar from forums and blog comments, then you are spending too much time on the internet.
@neofolklore
You've got to be kidding me. I've been further even more decided to use even go need to do look more as anyone can. Can you really be far even as decided half as much to use go wish for that? My guess is that when one really been far even as decided once to use even go want, it is then that he has really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like. It's just common sense.
He's just not a native english speaker obviously, and his name is probably not 'richard', but he tries, and I can get what he's trying to say a large part of the time so let's not get silly about it.
Why do you think everybody commenting is an american anyway?
I gotta say neofolklore's spoof was pretty good and amusing thought :) it was not completely random but completely undecipherable.
I believe that our, uh, education like such as, uh, South Africa and, uh, the Iraq, everywhere like such as, and, I believe that they should, our education over here in the U.S. should help the U.S., uh, or, uh, should help South Africa and should help the Iraq and the Asian countries, so we will be able to build up our future, for our children.
Bender Bending Rodriguez is my hero. Or as he would say, "OH... YOUR... GOD!"
Love the graphic.
Look at the date on the US clinic article.
Kiss my shiny metal router.
It's...it's Bender's ghost! (your avatar)
It's a sad day when society needs to open up interweb rehab centers. We are living in a World of Warcrack. Sadly the truth is: http://www.djarot.com/images/fun-290.jpg
I've been had too many times when clicking description-less image links. Sorry.
+1 for the motivational poster.
Nice picture, made me laugh.

Hey if it keeps crime down and keeps people from going out and doing reckless things then I don't care. Rather have them being at home and doing it virtually.
That's very nice, but the implementation of administrative law in China isn't the same as it is in the US and UK. Given problems with the PRC legal system - corruption, low judge quality, local protectionism comes to mind - enforcement can be quite difficult.
That isn't to say it won't happen. Edicts from above have substantial force, and if people complain on the internet (ironically) things happen faster.
Yeah in the US and UK law and judges are completely sane and unbiased and fair and following the law as written.. that's right.. no really..
Why clinics? Go to the farm.
I bet 90% of internet addicts are also porn addicts
---China's, how to say this, unorthodox rehabilitation methods, which involve "beating and confinement"
In America is called "Summer Camp", it is the same thing, with the beating and confinement (plus a couple of bears).
Internet addiction is a dangerous disease that is killing our youth, and we have to do something about it!
No seriously, people really spend money on curing "internet addiction"? Come the fuck on.
Computer addiction? Psh... you don't see TV addiction camps for those slobs that spend 6 or 7 hours a day watching TV. At least you can accomplish something on a computer.
I've seen people addicted to the internet, I mean seriously, and they get very weird when away for it a bit, and when you've seen them like that you don't doubt the existence anymore, you just automatically say 'dood, get some help'. (I say dood but there's a fair amount of women too).
Not that it won't be misdiagnosed in probably 90% to 95% of the cases, but that doesn't negate the existence of the real thing.
Oh and I know the classical spelling is 'dude' so don't bother pointing that out.
That's probably because TV has never had enough good material to get addicted to. Most TV is crap. It's a passive time filler, not a huge source of active stimulation. People that watch for 6 or 7 hours a day probably just can't think of anything better to do.
The internet, on the other hand, is an endless source of stimulation. It's like an infinitely-sized candy store for the mind with lots of things that can have real physiological effects. Or to some, it's an infinitely-sized drug house.
All of us easily could get remanded to such a treatment center for our Engadget addictions. In fact, I think I have seen some of you trolling aay on Craigslist and Facebook. And, I KNOW some of you slum on MyFace. The first step, my boys, is admitting you have a problem!
Pandora! I can't live without my Pandora! HELP!
"methods restricting personal freedom 'are strictly forbidden'"
In China? Since when?
All depends on the definition of 'personal freedom', perhaps they use the modern US definition politicians and their lobbyists and such have in mind eh..
In communist China, the internet addicts you...
No, wait that doesn't sound quite right...
You gotta love modern psychiatric treatment!
Actually this is more classical psychiatric treatment, from before they invented pills to mess you up just as good or better.
My first comment was supposed to come off sarcastic, but I failed.
Modern psychiatry is just as disgusting as it was 200 years ago.
And you're right, pills are the thing they are psuhing these days. No cures, just mind numbing pills.
Why the hell would anyone want to live in China is beyond me.
I have the same thought about immigrants to 'my' country, 'why would you want to?'
When you see the Robot Devil... tell 'im I'm'a comin'!
In my clinic, all Twitter users are beaten as a matter of course.
We used to beat people with aol.com email addresses until they would register and get gmail.com email.
