It appears that last night's midnight opening in Manhattan
went off like gangbusters, but the situation across the country is a little more subdued this morning with seemingly short lines and easy access to
DROIDs at every location we've visited. We won't put out a number, but we can confirm that several Engadget editors have taken the plunge today -- and if riffraff like us can waltz into the store and get them, you should certainly be able to. Good luck being assimilated out there today, and be sure to post pictures of your experience in comments (up above we've got San Francisco's first buyer courtesy of Ross Miller, and after the break, you can live it up with the good folks of Albany as they were paid a visit by Tim Stevens).
The woman in the first picture has it wrong. To do the "loser" symbol, you have to put your thumb out, too.
Gangbusters huh? Most of the people are probably in line for the Yankees parade.
My contract is up with AT&T in a few weeks (dumb phones on family plan $75 a month) and I really want this phone, but I just can't justify the extra cost going to Verizon. I'll have to settle for a Moment.
the vz rate plans are pretty much the same as att. you can get 3 lines of service with 700 shared minutes for 69.99.
We don't have data with AT&T. We've got two dumb phones with cheapest family minute and text plan. We both want smart phones and unlimited text and web. With Verizon, that is going to cost us at least $145 a month and Sprint (with unlimited everything) will set us back $100 (both after my corporate discount). That's a $1080 difference. In a year I can get another phone better than the Droid for that kind of money.
HotBBQ, I think you are making a good call. I work work for VZW, I hear you loud and clearly about the cost of service. The droid is bad ass...but there will be more good stuff coming down the pike. I think the HTC, Google and VZW team is going to be a serious triple combo XXX )
When I first saw these phones, the first thing I said was, they're ugly. Software is great, but it will never have wide spread appeal to nontechies. The whole Droid concept is great, but the packaging just isn't up to par. Hardware is great, but it's just not attractive at all.
just bought my on from the vz website. Free overnight shipping, plus with my employer discount its only going to cost me about 27 dollars more than my current contract. Droid FTW!
That's equivalent to someone buying a piece of turd on eBay and then going on bragging about how it "shipped for free overnight" and discount this discount that blah blah. At the end of the day you realize you just paid $XXX for a piece of shit. Enjoy.
No, people have been doing that since, oh, say, 2007....
Why is everybody in the bottom picture lined up at the Dollar Tree, its open 24/7?
Will moto release an update to fix the camera issues?
For starters, anyone who thinks this phone is a failure because it doesnt have waiting lines like the iphone needs to get a grip. There was no chance it was ever going to have the same buzz because it doesnt have an apple logo on it. 99% of the people that were waiting in line for the iphone were just mindless apple fanboys. Steve Jobs could take a brick, cut it in half, say its the thinnest paper weight ever made, stamp an apple logo on it and call it the iBrick. The next day each apple store would have a line of 75 mindless appletards waiting in line for it. Motorola doesnt have that following. What they do have is a good phone on the best network around. Thats why it will ultimately be successful for verizon. If you want a nice ipod that can occasionally make phone calls get the iphone. If you want the same capabilities coupled with the ability to get service and always make a clear call then go with the droid and verizon.
If anything you said were even remotely true, apple would be stomping MS marketshare in the PC world. There are just simple not as many apple fanboys as were people waiting in line for EVERY iphone launch. Not to say the droid wont be successful but taking it to the other maximum extreme is pointless.
The Droid is a failure because it is made by a company that is a failure to both employees and investors. Motorola is the reverse-image of Apple in all things.
Believe me, if Steve Jobs cut a brick in half, put Apple logo on it and sold it for $79, that iBrick would be the best selling paperweight of all time. He didn't become CEO of the Decade for doing a monkey dance in public. As it is, the Motorola Droid will become one of the worst-selling products of all time and they'll probably have to give it away in a couple of months time, just to clear inventory. Anything Motorola makes has no appeal at all. At least not to anyone who bought a Motorola cellphone in the past. Motorola share price around $9 today, most likely $5 in a month. The slide started today when almost no one came out to buy a Droid. Analysts were able to hype the Palm Pre to drive up Palm share price. Not so with the Motorola and the Droid. Harder to catch suckers the second time around.
Proud to say we got our first i phone to android sale!!
How do i upload a pic? We took a picture with the customer!
Please wake me up when the HTC HD2 arrives...I should be snoring by now.
+1
Android = "Meh"
Looks like the Stock Market is not reacting positively to the launch... Motorola shares is down 34 cents now...
Currently commenting from my droid.
That was quick! I was behind that girl. Thanks goodness they didn't get my picture!
I went last night to 34thst at 1030pm and there was already a line of about 15 people.. i chit-chatted with my friend Ben who was like 3rd in line ... and left (tooth ache) . BUt i was the first in line at 7:30AM for the store that had a line of 8 ppl at 8am when it opened in YONKERS, NY
i am loving the Droid btw ( not even feeling the BlackberryMessenger Withdrawal yet) heheheh
That's not Albany, its Clifton Park
My local store in LA was completely empty this morning :)
that right sheep, line up.
I think if you start a line anywhere idiots will jump in it and wait to see what theyre getting. you could start a line that when you get to the window you get a free punch to the face and people will stand in it.
Point me to that line for a face-punch. Nothing like getting something for free.
Typing on droid from vzw store. Htc eris is right next to the droid. This mkeyboard sucks. The store j not den packed ad the employees are morons.
loo-hoo-za-hers
It's definitely no iphone. KB is a POS. Verizon needs to do better than this lame attempt.
Verizon doesn't make phones...you must be an iAss...no pun intended.
Droid= Yawn!
I'm one of those "long time listeners, first time callers," not an Apple fanboy or Windows fanboy... just a gadget fanboy! So anything new I always have to check out. That said, I am an iphone owner, and I've really had nothing to complain about the user interface and iphone experience; the network is what it is, and I won't comment on that. All-in-all though, the iphone interface has really been the thing that keeps me loving my phone everyday.
Anyway, I went to check out the two Droids (yes, there is something other than the Motorola coming out); I gotta say, I really liked the look and feel of the HTC Eris more.
Obviously, lacking the physical keyboard for some is an issue, but the overall UI of the Eris was alot smoother and the device itself felt better in the hand. This could be due to the fact that I'm used to the iphone?
With regard to specifications, obivously the Motorola is going to attract more people, but I just thought I'd mention the HTC as I liked it alot more than the Motorola.
Just my two cents....
Nothing wrong with that. That's the whole thing behind Android: everyone gets their choice. Some people like stock. Some like Sense. Some want Motoblur. There's even talk about Acer's Liquid. It's choice.
Contrast that to Apple and iPhone OS or...Apple and iPhone OS. Or.... (Honestly, you could say the same thing about most of the other phone OSes as well. There are some exceptions, like Maemo and LinMo, however).
good comment. I've been playing with the HTC Eris for 3 weeks now. I can totally see why iPhone user would like the feel of that one. The HTC Sense UI is really what makes it good. I think as android evolves and a handset maker like HTC who make great stuff and put a great interface on it like Sense UI, watch out! Once you see that and get it you can tout the network delivering the experience you expect.
wow, americans must really be stupid ;)
Wow, foreigners must really be rude.
Love my new DROID and the hubby's Eris. Well worth 15 minutes @ lunch.
Are we gonna expect lines for every major Android handset release? Should be interesting
get in line when HTC's 2.0 Android device!
BREAKING NEWS.... Motorola Share lost 42 cents (4.51%) on first day of Droid launch.. well done.
Has anyone been able to find the droid's multimedia dock online at Verizon? It seems to be mystyriously missing. They have the car mount, but no dock. Odd...
I decided to replace my work line (AT&T Blackberry Bold) with a new line of service on VZW. At first I ordered a Blackberry Storm 2 online but then I changed my mind and decided to return it for one of the new Android handsets available on Friday 11/6.
I went to the store at 8:30am, there were 20 employees and 4 customers. While the salesperson assigned to me tried to be helpful she was clueless about the Droid phones beyond what was on the pre-printed product description card below each phone. I chose the Motorola Droid but I liked the HTC Eris better aesthetically. Everyone kept saying the Motorola had alot better specs and was faster...we'll see.
I ran into my first set of performance issues this morning when I could not place calls and I could not sync any of my google account info. 2 hours on the phone with Vzw and I got it back to spec. Sometimes it sucks to be an early adopter. I thought it was ironic that i had to be on AT&T I-phone all morning while I was trying to trouble shoot my brand new android (never had that problem with the iphone or any problems for that matter and I am on my third gen 3gs now)
Anyone have issues, horror stories?
