So we knew a
select number of authorized resellers would start stocking iPhones soon, and thanks to a tipster, it looks like we might be getting a glimpse at a none-too-surprising recipient of the new order. As these pics from an anonymous tipster show,
"big hug for your mobile life" retailer
The Shack will be getting AT&T's flagship device soon, with a letter supposedly from EVP of store operations Bryan Bevin (found after the break) adding that the 3G and 3GS rollout will begin this month at some company-owned locations in the Dallas Forth Worth and New York City areas, with a nationwide rollout in 2010. Not that you necessarily needed more places to tempt you with the device, but it's always fun to have options.
Yes... because we want it in another STORE... not another CARRIER. Wait.........
I bet the lines at Radio Shack will be longer than the lines were at Verizon Stores today for the Droid...
So after the "not so phenomenal" unveiling of Motorola Droid to USA yesterday http://bit.ly/did-droid-conquered-USA-today
Like us, other buyers are asking too, if did it really conquered america or not (like verizon promises to their "mocking" advertisement)
Now it seems, iPhone realize that they should try AT&T for a change? Dang.. shouldn't they see what will happen to droid first? before making hasty testosterone induced decisions...
Everyday that goes by and Radio Shack still exists boggles my mind. I have no idea how in the world this company remains profitable.
1) Every "geek" that would shop there is smart enough to know that NewEgg or any of a handful of other online retailers will have what THE SHACK has at a fraction of the price.
2) Any less-intelligent person (aka, normal people) must know they are going to have a wider variety of products at a big box retailer such as Best Buy (or even Wal-Mart / Target) for their electronic needs.
Seriously, I do not understand how they make it. And I'm not flaming or being a fanboy or anything. I just don't get it!
Actually, Radio Shack is better than Best Buy for variety in hard-to-find parts (when you don't want to buy stuff online and wait for it to arrive). Like I recently bought a couple of LEDs from Fry's. If I didn't have a Fry's in my town, I'd probably have tried Radio Shack.
Yeah, radioshack is good for electronic components, and it has many convenient locations.
That is IF they still carry them, and not have taken them out in order to make more space for Boost Mobile phones.
Radioshack is for electronics. You go there when you want to make something with the breadboard you have lying around.
One thing that keeps them going is customer service: When you go into one of their relatively small stores, you will be promptly met by a friendly and (mostly) knowledgeable person who listens to your needs and provides multiple solutions, not just the "deal of the week" variety. I actually think they over train their people to do this. You typically won't get nearly the same service at Best Buy, Fry's or any website.
Remember, some people are so un-tech savy they really need a live guide to replace a dead video camera battery or pick & connect a bluetooth headset.
Also, Radio Shack has been re-inventing themselves for years: when I was young they sold vacuum tubes & transistor radios. They just latch on to the current market trends and follow suit.
Plus their supply of harder to find "do it yourself" parts makes them invaluable to builders when something is needed ASAP (I know Fry's blows them away at this, but Fry's isn't everywhere like the Shack is). I'm not a fanboy either, its just that I know I can go there and get what I want NOW for more money.
I do wonder if at sometime in the future the whole technology product landscape will morph into something that Radio Shack can't re-invent themselves to stay profitable in. But for now, they will be a fall back for the mall shopping mom who just needs to pick up a special adapter quickly without having to hunt for it on their own in a warehouse sized facility.
They should audit Radio Shack..
Smells of terrorist money...
USA #1
guy943: many towns with and without Fry's have specialty electronic components stores.
RadioShack is surviving due to cell phone sales. They undercut other places so you go there, then gouge the prices on everything else int he store to make up for it.
NewEgg won't help you find out which components will help you build that electronic DIY project you dreamt about in your sleep last night!
They do have a seriously awesome headset I keep buying there and an epic $6 2-year replacement plan even if I tear it to shreds. I guess I still go there then, they're the only ones with that headset. ;(
If Monster Cable can survive, so can the Shack...
Yeah, but c'mon man... Every true "geek" you're talking about in #1 on your list also knows you can go get a DPST momentary switch, some LEDs, and a project box (plastic, or the plastic with the aluminum face, your choice) at that very moment, without waiting for delivery, from Radio Shack. In fact, I can walk to one that's only a few blocks away here in NYC. And where else you gonna get the good gospel of Forrest M. Mims?
I love Fry's (when I'm in California), NewEgg is great, but I'm not mad at Radio Shack. All of these retailers can co-exist.
Well, thank god. I had no idea where to get an iPhone. :-P
Thank goodness. Now I'll have somewhere to go for a $49.95 iPhone USB cable and a $69.99 case.
I live in Austin, TX and on my last two trips to the local Radio Shack (to recycle batteries) the ass clowns who work there told me these two sales lies:
(1) Android has more apps than the iPhone.
(2) iPhone apps will run on Android phones.
When I called them out on the later statement they told me "Um, well... that's what our T-Mobile report told us."
Bryan Bevin, if you are reading this please apply some quality control to the BS your store employees are spewing.
"T-Mobile report" = "T-Mobile rep"
Radio Shack used to be where a person could go to get tech help , now its :
You've got Questions they've got Batteries!!
Their T-Mobile rep probably did tell them that.
If they're anything like the AT&T people. "All channels 1080p" when their box can't even output 1080p and "You'll get the premium services with the HD package without subscribing to them".
How is it news that a store is selling iPhones???? Maybe if it were 2005 this would be something we care about.
Why? LOL... Why?
iPhone coming to The Shack: Dallas an NYC this month, nationwide in 2010?
Shouldn't that be:
iPhone coming to The Shack: Dallas AND NYC this month, nationwide in 2010?
That would be pretty funny if it was KIRF instead of the iphone. THAT would be news.
This just in, Sears is selling Dyson vacuums, and Walmart is selling George Foreman Grills. I anticipate a post about it any minute, I am sure the editors of Engadget are just a bit busy.
I'm looking forward to the day the caption says the iPhone is coming to Verizon (or less likely-Sprint). I get terrible coverage in most cities I visit with ATT and Tmobile but get good coverage between Verizon and Sprint.
Took me a second to remember who the hell the Shack even was lol. Seriously Radio Shack changing your name from something that you've been known by for over 50 years was NOT a good idea.
radio shack is still named radio shack where i lived. they're like COMPUSA but with a tiny store and like 5 employees.
RadioShack DID NOT change it's name.
The Shack only appears in some advertising and promotional materials. Just like IHOP is still International House of Pancakes, HoJo's is still Howard Johnson's and KFC was still Kentucy Fried Chicken.
Obama is in office, so they thought they'd CHANGE it.
(@Link2877)
What the hell is "The Shack"? I know of a place called "Radio Shack", but I'm pretty sure that place went out of business years ago.
No, they just renamed themselves.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarcasm
Maybe you should read up on that.
Ahhhh, good'ol Radio Shack. How many great memories I have: TRS-80, actual bread-board components, SPL meters, huge multi-channel portable CBs... And now look what you've become - the Sharper Image of Wal-Mart level gadgets. But now you've got your iPhone - welcome to the 21st century.

With the TRS-80, you can calculate as fast as Superman!
iphone 3gs 8gb coming. http://www.zjtechlive.com/rumor-iphone-3gs-8gb-coming/
Ok so what does this mean.
It's already the Michael Jordan of cellphone sales.
How can it possibly improve.
Yeah, but MJ (somewhat ignominiously) ended up in the Washington Wizards.

iPhone who cares, that's old tech. It's now all about droid envy. The shack & apple need to step up thier game now.
Seriously my local radio shack is still ok, got a 3rd party video cable for the iPhone/touch for under $20 and also a mic for a touch for about $15. Sure somethings are expensive but it the only place we have here to get parts now. Internet ordering sucks just for a fuse etc...
Next stop ... 7-11.
soon to be named "THE 7"
It is a rather outdated name, however - it originally stood for their stores being open from 7am 'til 11pm, although they now go 24 hours a day. But it's such a great name, who would change it? I do like "The 7," though.
In some countries, 7-11 actually sells more stuff, including electronics.
Remember when they started selling Commodore 64s at Kmart...it was the beginning of the end.
Too little, too late.
Damn. Well at least its still limited to ATT's network so its not contaminating T Mobile\Verizon\Sprint's network. Frankly I'd be willing to have a charge put on my monthly bill...say $10....if it would keep the iTard phone away from our network. Its like being on AOL's network back in the 90's. It was populated by a bunch of braindead people who did nothing but bother other netizens. Same deal with iPhone users...arrogant pompous users who are only interested in bling instead of truly usable phones. (Bah multitasking is for nerds after all.)
I wonder what % of iPhone users have spinners on their car?
haha i work at radioshack company sucks, i dont even know how there in business, i think its a money laundry front. company is full of fraud they hire a bunch of crooks that like to steal peoples identity when they run credit for ur phones, we get people fired all the time for setting up fake accounts its insane. i wouldnt buy a phone there.. hell no! and i work there! if the job market didnt suck id be long gone. cant wait to find a new job........
That's interesting... you are specifically taught in training to follow specific guidelines and absolutely NOT set up accounts without proper forms of identification... I have turned a number of illegal immigrants away because they did not have proper ID, and rather sold them on prepaid plans. The company is absolutely NOT full of fraud, as you claim.
Radio Shack is not going anywhere. There may be some silly employees in some Radio Shack stores, but that is not true for the entire company nationwide. As a whole, i would say that Radio Shack employees are more knowledgeable than employees from Best Buy and most definitely Wal-Mart, mostly because RS employees get PAID to provide customers with the best and a variety of solutions to their problems. I have been in Best Buy before and have physically seen employees WALK AWAY from customers as they approached certain areas. I actually talked to a guy about a GPS in Best Buy and had him go buy it at the local Radio Shack because he could expect the same quality of help i was giving him that moment, which is priceless to most people.
Judging by your previous comments, you work at a cart in the mall (excuse me, kiosk). Your command of the English language makes me question our education system, but you are at least entertaining in a sad sort of way. I'm no fan of RadioShack but flaming the company you work for just because your little buddies were arrested for being slime bags doesn't really add to the discussion about the iPhone being sold with other retailers. I'm starting to think somebody needs to approve every comment before it is posted on Engadget.
You would think this isn't big news. However the amount of people that come into my store asking for Iphone and as a result losing a sale is ASTOUNDING.
This equals better prices for customers and more opportunities to be able to support myself. Comission is a lovely thing.
Is it just me or does "the Shack" sound like a place where child molesters go out and do their thing and its what little kids call it?
Billy's Mom (who yes, does have it going on)"Billy where were you yesterday?"
Billy: "I went over to "The Shack" with a stranger and he made me feel funny all afternoon.
http://www.weeklyreader.com/readandwriting/content/binary/spam%20boy.jpg
I still cannot say "the Shack." It's just not the same.
WOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!! THE IPHONE ON THE SHACK?! :O I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS! -_-... useless... they should've go with newer phones like the droid.
