LTE Connected Car redefines the 'mobile' in mobile broadband (video)
If you think cellphones have become overbearingly complex, look away now. A partnership of tech companies and content providers, known as the ng Connect Program, has revealed a prototype "LTE Connected Car," which, as you might surmise, combines 4G mobile broadband connectivity with a bunch of cloud-sourced facilities, such as video on demand, audio libraries, and multiplayer gaming. It can also serve as a Wi-Fi hotspot, connect directly to home automation or monitoring systems, and probably cook you scrambled eggs if you ask nicely. A Toyota Prius serves as the guinea pig for this new concept, and we've got video of the whole shebang after the break.

I like, makes those long trips easier to go through.
LG and Nortel demonstrated LTE data rates of 50 Mbit/s while travelling at 110 km/h which is 70mph, just over highway speed limits.
of course yo, for annoying ass friends or kids, i have road rage which doesnt go well with annoying passengers.
(rounded 68.35pmh to 70mph, also 65mph is the speed limit in Illinois where i currently reside.)
@imdaillest, the speed limit in TX on major highways between large cities is 70 MPH during the day and 65 MPH at night.
Why are these guys acting like they invented mobile broadband in cars?...and I really hate that "cloud" cool aid, what was wrong with saying "internet"?
my battery died... ...wonder why
why hasn't this been done already (already = an option on most cars)? to put the parts in is pretty cheap and manufacturers could change a massive amount for it.
The infrastructure's not there.
if you have such a car...why stay at home?
What if we could exponentially increase the number of motor vehicle accidents, daily? What if we could kill entire families, because mom needed to check her facebook?
THANK YOU!
the only thing that got me scared in this clip is that car wasn't moving for a second...
and that all this technology can be dangerous for driver and the passengers.
anybody think this is a little ridiculous? is it really THAT necessary to have this amount of connectivity in your car?
Yeah part of me thinks this is really cool and part of me thinks this is really unnecessary. But if you think about it, technology was moving in this direction already, this is pretty much inevitable.
Why are they all standing in the middle of the road!? mmmmmmmhmmmmmmm.
OMG, those were engineers who could explain things for Joes
Fucking awesome. This is going to revolutionize the auto-industry. Next step is cars that drive themselves.
Now all we need is money for fuel, the interconnect services, and for whatever we needed once we arrive where ever we were headed in the first place.
Regards,
Dan
What about safety? when you driving alone?
we don't needs more accidents....
Lame.
My car can tell me that a friend is nearby so that we can have lunch? You mean like my smartphone? Oh, wait, I don't have that for my phone either. So we cant figure out a phone model, but the car model will just magically work?
I don't understand, all you need is a DROID or IPhone not a LTE car to get connected..seems like bullshit to me.
These guys should lay off the caffeine :(
They are going to build a completely new operating system and content provider and do what? Like the last post, take your smart phone connect it to the net and provide the data to the car.
I don't want another interface that doesn't work the way I would expect it to.
Who's going to buy this? Dealer cost 4,000 ? the average nav system built into a car costs 3 grand yikes. Most "good" after market products are 100-500.
Stop trying to reinvent the wheel and simply add on to make it better.
So other than the jargon and confusing bs, they want to make a garmin/tomtom device that they'll license to car manufactures. Given that it was so cheap for them to do this themselves, I don't see any care manufactures caring. BMW, Mercedes, Lexus all have their own proprietary systems none of which use touch screen and they have a lot better designers. Only Cadillac's chose to use touch screen.
The other thing that bothered me were their scenarios weren't very compelling. Playing video in the car? Ya prob any mini van has a dvd option for cheap, streaming sucks compared to high quality dvd. Playing games in the car? I've been playing games in the car for 20+ and for a lot cheaper than this, remember game gear! Plus touch screen sucks for games, look how uncomfortable the kids look hunched over and I don't want my games to be stuck to the car. I want to bring them in the waiting room.
The low hanging fruits are, of course, location based features - find me a dry cleaner. The correct solution would be to integrate the users mobile phone into their car UI so you can use the smart phone location based apps easily from you car. Why put another antenna in your car when you already have an expensive smart phone with cellular data service? I think the mobile app space is confusing all these companies. They think you can put apps anywhere and have the same premium value, when the value is only on the mobile phone because of the convenience, portability, etc. that mobile afford.
So will I be able to text message again? Just as long as I do it from my car's built in infotainment system? Why don't they just hurry up, and mkae cars that we don't have to drive anymore. Then we can play with all these dumb gadgets in the car as opposed to actually driving. What happened to the days when people drove for the joy of driving? Technology is taking over our automobiles. Cars now have the ability to tell us what we shouldn't do... It has gone too far.
We don't need connectivity from the auto (I don't want to pay a monthly subscription for internet in my car). What we need instead is the car to be paired to your cell phone. Then you use your cell phone's internet connection.
Looks like an internal pitch to get all the companies that would profit hyped up: Autos, Maintenance, telecom Service providers, telecom Hardware providers, Video cos, Music cos, Game cos, and on and on.
This may happen, but it's just a way for them to sell more shit and make you a good little corporate citizen.
It'll likely only marginally progress your useful connectivity, and only further the over-connectivity (to TV, net, etc) and the lack of direct human relationships which we are already suffering.
This car will do the Auto Show circuit. It's not much more than a concept car that you never see again. We're pretty much all in agreement that plugging your smartphone into the dash will accomplish the same things. Admit it: everybody and their cousin has some kind of smart device now. You car is just a bot that needs your smartphone input to know who is drving for that trip. The real next big thing is when the cars drive themselves. And the passengers will still use their phones to do their own thing.
Derrick Keefe has the strongest Canadian accent evar. Oh, and this sounds like a road-based Virgin America RED to me lol, it'll probably crash as much too.
Yeah definitely was and I think this is too much. Let cars be cars, traffic updates and maps are enough, I don`t need youtube or facebook in my car.
Great! They found yet another service we HAVE to have, and WILL pay another premium for.
