Make your own Bluetooth Star Trek Communicator (video)
If you're looking for a project for the weekend and the Knock Lock seems a little naff, why not try building your own Bluetooth Star Trek communicator? This is definitely not a project for the faint of heart -- expect to custom cut a circuit-board, drill some holes, add a serial port, a Bluetooth module, and a microcontroller. That said, when it's all said and done you'll be placing (and answering) calls the same way they do in the 23rd century: by speaking through a small, distorted speaker. If this is your thing, hit up that read link to get the full step-by-step. But before you go that route, be sure to peep the video demo after the break.

I am Locutus of Blutooth.
Shut your resistive-screened mouth, fool.
No one cares about inductive touch screens :(
Do you have to wear cooper-wired-glove to operate inductive touch screen?
I like it! If you make one, though, you need to use a dial tone like this one!:

No.
I don't care what people say. I want that!
As long as it makes the bleep bleep noise.
I just watched the utub, and it does.
Ok I want it.
I'd rather have a bluetooth communicator badge, 24th Century > 23rd Century
If you can't buy it, mod it.

also this reminds me of a company that once wanted to release a real phone shaped like a replica of a real Star Trek communicator, but they never did :-(
Been done before...
now I have to carry 2 shitty devices around, iPhone and this...
Someone needs to stuff a GSM voice controlled phone into it and THAT would be impressive..
Not just stuffing a BT headset into a piece of plastic.
If you feel it's that shitty, then I'll send you a self addressed stamped envelope and take that iPhone off your hands.
Do want!
Not bad.
Reply test.
Worked.
Yep, old account decided to work again for no reason.
Everything in life has a reason.
Even the TwitterPeek.
This is going to be hot on the star trek convention.
me want!
how many comments before someone offers to make her engine room operational? you guys let me down
I think it has something to do with the fact that the big E went all Nazi on us in a post a while back with an attractive woman in it, deleting all suggestive comments and then eventually shutting down the comments all together.
Wii weather girl right, I think she must've been related to someone.
okay im searching for the wii weather girl
You have a huge Droid banner ad, just so you know, and then on the carousel comes motorola droid review...
This beats the shit out of my bluetooth headset modded into a payphone handset. It even has frayed wires hanging out of what's left of the armored cable.
I must do that. I have a bt headseat lying around gathering dust.
Wow, people in the 23rd Century use such a huge device to communicate? I've seen a lot smaller ones in the first decade of the 21st Century already.
In the 23rd Century, bio synthetic products are everywhere, which make things even smaller as DNA instead of solid state back in the 21st Century.
People communicate in the 23rd century?
I figure we'd be mind melting by then.
As for this clunky thing: nice try, but pop culture: win, reality: fail.
You're so much of a geek that you life has fused with Sci-Fi.
I think that there is a medical term for that.
How many of your "small" Bluetooth headsets can get a clear voice signal to the next room, let alone the other side of the world or an orbiting space ship?
Sell em & make a million :D
When will the Next Generation communicator be available? Then I will carry around both crap gadgets (iPhone and a Star Trek lapel Pin)!
Lol. Subtle. I missed that you called the iphone crap the first time around. Nice job.
Am I the only one who thinks this girl looks hot? (in bed)
No
No sir, she is smokin' HAWT!
yeah pretty much. but you also thought janet reno looked hot, so..
Well, at least she's cute in her geekyness. We need more female geeks!
Considering she has two freaky hands on one arm, no. What race is that?
I've been wondering for a while now why an official version of this kind of thing isn't available. And why isn't there a bluetooth version of Uhura's earpiece?
What a babe.
This is what the "naughties" fashion of Geek-chic helped us overcome.
Thank you Adam Brody.
I wouldn't bukkake her - she looks like her brother.
Cool. I would like to integrate this into a dick tracy watch sometime :P
Fortunately I’m not quite that lonely yet. I’ll just wait until the real thing arrives.
Looks a little bit big. I wonder if the original communicator was actually that large on the tv show.
There's nothing sexier than an Asian chick with soldering iron ;-) RESPECT
wake me when we get STARWARS holograms
Wake me up when we get Stargate communications stones.
Anybody feel like making one for money? I want one but don't have the time, and would probably screw it up more than a little bit.
Reply if interested.
