Microsoft messes with 'natural' user interface, featuring eye tracking, voice control and wild body gestures
While today's Windows might not look completely out of place next to a Windows of yore, Microsoft Research certainly has some wild ideas for how to progress computer interaction. In a talk during Microsoft's college tour, Craig Mundle has been touting his research wares, including some pretty reasonable advances like auto completion of common concepts; automatic, intelligent sorting of large amounts of data; and a movable, modular work surface. One of the odder demos involves moving the LCD so it's flat on the desk and then using huge arm movements to manipulate a 3D model projected onto a piece of glass, and the demonstration of eye-tracking is intriguing while not altogether convincing. Of course, we've got a while before we'll see any of this stuff in real products, but perhaps we won't have to wait so long as ten years for that "2019" vision of the future to come to pass. Hit up the read link for the videos.

Wow, that looks so comfortable to use for extended periods of time.
only if your fat like him :D
minority report anyone?
Even though I am an Apple Fan Boy, I love the fact that Microsoft is dabbling in all of these awesome technologies so that I one day can bust out my moves like Tom Cruise in Minority Report.
Yep. Seems like a lot of people here have not seen Minority Report (including the author), otherwise they'd recognize / comment on the fact that [someone] already came up with the idea :p
Came up with the IDEA not the Technology. TOOL!
"Yep. Seems like a lot of people here have not seen Minority Report (including the author), otherwise they'd recognize / comment on the fact that [someone] already came up with the idea :p"
Yep. Seems like a lot of people don't know this, but Spielberg actually consulted Microsoft on what the future of computing might look like and then used that in the movie, otherwise you'd recognise / comment on the fact that [Microsoft] aren't copying someone else's idea, but are actually the progenitor of it, and are only now beginning to demonstrating the in-roads they've made into making it a reality.

@ Noli - nice call
and yea, I'm all about some "wild body gestures."
"Hey Pete, what the hell are you doing?
Oh hey John, I'm just owning some Word documents! Have that report on your desk asap!"
Noli, making some renderings which didn't lead to a direct advisory role does not make Microsoft a progenitor. It's more accurate to say that the film was an opportunity for the actual science advisor to mock up what would become g-speak: http://www.engadget.com/2008/11/14/oblongs-g-speak-the-minority-report-os-brought-to-life/
But does it blend?
I could really use a blend at the moment.
Microsoft, now demoing their prototype invisible guns.
I knew we should have brought the invisible tanks
I brought my invisible copy of Duke Nukem Forever .... bugger just dropped it, now where the hell did it go?
I am unable to access the site through the read link, so I was curious: Any discussion of Midori/Singularity in this tour?
video?
video?
Isn't it Craig Mundie not Mundle ?
100% true
Will it also hang as usual MS products? or BSOD?
oh you're SO original
It's cool, but not practical.
Why exactly is Microsoft trying to move us backwards with input?
Is that a serious question?
I've tried out eye tracking for cursor movement, it really isn't as easy as you would think. Really freaks out your eyes after just a couple of minutes when everywhere you look, be it intentional or unintentional, the pointer goes there. Fantastic for paraplegics who have no other option though.
I am going to patent multi-eye keyboards right now. That way, someday, I can hold these companies in a patent deathgrip when they eventually invent the technology to be in a usable form.
Muhahaahahaa
MS spends over $7 billion a year on "R&D". If this is all they can show for it, I pity them -- what a waste of talent and money. Ballmer would do better if he just shut down his in-house research efforts and gave the money to outside groups who might actually use it to develop something original and useful.
Looks too much like exercise!
yeah totally,
I figure in the future I can control my computer with just finger twitches..
Let's aim for Wall-E not Minority.. sounds more comfortable..
Is the link not working for anyone else? It worked a minute ago but now it's stopped, for me at least.
In the future i want a computer that we can control with our thoughts.
iл the futuяe, computeяs thought coлtяol you
tom cruise should be the one showing off this product
Natal for Windows, FTW!
I am pretty sure that Microsoft is secretly working on Courier. This is just a tip on what to expect.
I've seen something similar.

Here's the website about this AeroTap thing. You can download and try it out for free.

Can't get to the videos, but from the picture it looks like I can finally control Windows using a window.
Site seems down, they should have used netscape server eh.
about the search sorting, why does the user have to tell the computer to sort the results, should't it just sort it automatically?
If anyone has ever used the iPhone, they know Apple has been using "gestures" for a while now. Not just in "future" products.
