MOTO releases AMP MID, the OLED Android 2.0 handheld you didn't even know existed
Remember those BASF commercials, the: "We make a lot of the products you buy better" ones? That's kind of the story at MOTO Development Group. We've seen the company working on e-ink internals, also having a hand in the creation of the Zune 2.0 and the Livescribe Pulse. MOTO's going it alone for its latest product, though, a MID reference design called the Android Media Platform (AMP) that runs Android 2.0 and is available now to developers. Yes, the DROID isn't the only 2.0 player releasing today. AMP will ultimately be available in three sizes: 10-, 5-, and 3.5-inches; the mid-sized model is the one shipping now. That touchscreen can be OLED or LCD, oomph is provided by a Texas Instruments OMAP3430 CPU, accelerometers and GPS are integrated as is 802.11b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth, and optional 3G wireless, all powered by a 3,000mAh battery. There's no word on price, but we're guessing that's somewhat negotiable depending on your intended application and, naturally, the volume, volume, volume of your order.

Nice....when I considering getting the Apple iPod Touch. This is good news to my ears. Now I ll have to just wait for a week or two to decide on what Media Player to get. (Zune HD is still in battle......oled gats me jeezing all over my pants. U need to see it to appreciate it)
awesome OLED tablets...
bjay talking about jezzing all over his pants...
idk whether to be excited or disgusted. its too much for my morning to handle.
Nice
The big one in the picture can't be android though, it's got Lightroom on the screen which is windows and mac only... that said, I'd love a tablet that size that could run lightroom well with an OLED screen, it would make an awesome portfolio
I was thinking that too. Lightroom on a device like that? I think not.
Light room is so nice on an LED backlit monitor. I use it on our 24" HP Dreamcolor at work and it's better than a tube.
That could easily be Bibble too.
That 10" tablet needs to be out right now.
YES! That 10" tablet, with a PixelQi display, and DVI-I instead of HDMI ... I'd be ALL over that with Android or Maemo. Esp. with Acer's port of Firefox to Android.
Maemo will be a nice alternative OS
What the hell is "MOTO"? Motorola needs to sue them.
moto is their nickname and if you have ever seen one of their dumbphones boot up it says "hello moto"
@koala: I know, that's why I'm asking who this MOTO Development Group is. You'd think it had something to do with Motorola, but look at moto.com and you'll see they're not the same (or rather you'd see signs that they are different but nothing that says "This company is in no way related to Motorola, and we are in now way trying to rip off the name. Seriously, for realz."
Moto is not part of Motorola. They are a product development company based in CA.
Will Motorola be adding their own media player app? I hear android"s media player sucks/doesn't support many codecs, but I have never used it. but 3.5-5 inch oled is amazing if it is as good as my Zune HD's and how is that processor. Hopefully it has a removable battery too.
These are the kind of things I would buy immediately if I could find them in a brick &mortar store.
How comes that in the real world effective tablets with 3G support are nowhere to be found?
Nokia 's stuff (including the N900) don't specially excite me so I have preordered HTC HD2 because it is the nearest thing I could find, but I would happily exchange it for this Moto tablets
There isn't enough public interest in these devices. It costs money to put them on store shelves. It probably wouldn't be worth it for manufacturers, and retailers to have a device like this in the stores (yet).
@Koala
Android has lots and lots of possible media players to choose from: some suck, some are quite good and a few are truly exceptional.
unless you have the right software and content providers for the tablet form factor, your are left with pretty much a gimmicky device. An answer looking for question. Whatever, Apple will do it better anyway. Then all will follow.
Naturally.
@t: yep it seems quite clear that as media platforms (content digesting, web, games and basic PIM) Apple products will serve us better for the time being.
Anyway it's only good that there are projects like Moko's one in development. Big sized (10"+) tablet format seems very interesting for many activities (productivity, note-taking, sketching, control surfaces...) that could be crippled by Apple's signature restrained hardware feature sets and application policies.
For istance, the 10" Moko spec lists a pen digitizer sensor, alongside a bunch of of ports (2 usb, 1 usb otg, 1 sd slot), all things that Apple may not feel the need to include in their sleek future tablet.
This, coupled with the chance to distribute Android apps without a strict centralized approval process, could lead to many interesting specialized use cases.
Some Orb magic to it, and it's ready to stream every shit I've got laying around in my PC, why do I need Apple to hand me MY media on a silver platter and a hefty price tag on the side?
Fuck Apple, any geek with some time in his hands will provide much better use to such a machine, with a much opened OS.
I don't don't like my apples chewed for me.
I really wish they would put infrared capability on these. IR is cheap, and small to implement. The ability to add the abilities of a harmony remote, would make this a must have in any home theatre system.
Update:
It says it CAN support IRDA, but I don't see it on the specs for the devices..
I so want the 5 inch version. I can see myself modding my dash in my 300m to port that sucker (and hopefully charge it too)....damn, if they put the new Google Navigation on that sucker, there is no way people would by a GPS....you'd be crazy to do that (for GPS hardcores there is still Copilot et al).
I'm really looking forward to a MID battle - N800/810/900 vs Chumby vs Archos vs MOTO AMP vs etc....

I'm in love with the 10" tablet.
I want Android (plus Acer's firefox port to Android) on it.
Or Maemo.
Or even Ubuntu.
Any of those 3. Bonus with a PixelQi display and DVI-I instead of HDMI.
This sounds like a very good alternative to the iTablet that I've been very impatiently waiting for. Just hope the 10" (the one I want) isn't OLED, though, because OLEDs don't work well under bright ambient light. Don't want to pay for a 3G option either, because that means yet another expensive wireless account and this sort of thing is what 3G WiFi routers are good for.
why is the 10" being marked for GPS and not the 3.5" or 5" versions? wouldn't the smaller units make more sense for use in cars???
