Yamaha intros more affordable Tenori-On 'Orange'
It's been well over a year since we published our take on Yamaha's perplexing, beautiful and all-around intriguing Tenori-On concept, and evidently the masses have spoken out. This week, the company announced that it will soon be shipping a "more affordable" version with the name Tenori-On 'Orange,' with some vendors already leaking a £649 ($1,077) MSRP. Put simply, the new Orange version will retain all of the musical functionality that the original had (or has, as it were), but the magnesium casing will be replaced by a rugged plastic one and the battery / back panel LED options will also be removed in order to shave costs. Still, we're all for peeling back on the flash in order to get more music makers into more hands, so we'll certainly look to wrap our own paws around one when it starts shipping in December.
Update: Engadget Japanese just did a quick hands-on with the Orange, check it out!

First
to be an asshat
I thought the original was $1,172 something, so this one is suppose to be $1,077? I mean i think i'd pay the 100 bucks to get the back panel leds, magnesium and portability of the batteries, plus whatever features that are missing.
I just DON'T get these things, why are they so expensive? They just look like a gimmiky kids toy to me or something that would be fun to mess around with for a bit then never use again. They seem to be marketed as some type of prosumer audio hardware though :S
You should prob check this out, Little Boots, she's released this, album peak at 5 in the UK. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-CWBgm_-Ggs
You beat me to the little boots link. :'(. Gawd, I love her...
and another better video... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N6tLRCDqJ2c
Yesssss.... Little Boots is amazing. www.littlebootsmusic.co.uk
Met her and saw her in Chicago. Great use of Tenori-On and the Stylophone too!
I've been eyeing up a Tenori-On since seeing one used by Bill Bailey in one of his shows.
The original version can be had for about £700, so I fail to see how this is really much of an improvement.
If they got it down to the £3-400 range, then it would be worth making the changes but for an extra £50, I'd rather take the premium model.
Is this just a monome knock-off?
As far as I can tell they were both developed in 2005.
Monome came first.
But aside from the interface, they're really nothing alike.
I wonder how I can get a monster super crysis-running computer for $1000 dollars, but a glowing board that samples sounds costs even more.

$1,077? this is the price of the new, cheaper one?
The "older" one is selling for $999 according to the above website.... I'd be highly upset if it were over $1000, and I highly doubt it will be.
my guess? $200-$600
WANT.
It seems like a really great way to tinker around and get into making music. Price is FAR too expensive still.
Wait, the old one has a magnesium body?
Oh man, I'd love to see a blowtorch taken to one of them...
Here's how it works, you are a twen, you take temp jobs, you lose your job, you goto various temp agencies and sign in then you call them every day if anything is available, then after a hopefully no more than about 3 days they call or reply and say 'yeah we got a phone operator job for a big telecom org' and you say 'i take it'
Next day you arrive at the training place where they give you a crash course in their contracts and stuff and then they assign you to a call center where you sit in an office with lots of others taking calls and applying what you learned and getting filled in by the computer, and when needed a section chief, you are also told a call should be handled in x amount of seconds and that you are monitored from time to time to see if you do well.
Here's how it does NOT work: You live with your parents and you love phones and sit reading the internet all day about android and love it so much that you decide to do something for humanity and volunteer at the telecom's HQ where you sit next to the boss who caresses you and brings you cakes and flowers and tells you the few secrets you didn't know yet about your beloved phone.
Welcome to reality.
Oh drat, now my reply looks silly without the original, but maybe the original comment author will get it anyway.
If he reads it.
Anyway, *nelson laugh*
