The Intel P55 Express chipset snafu that caused iPhones
to lose their syncing minds has now been remedied -- at least by one motherboard maker.
Gigabyte has issued a BIOS update making things all hunky-dory between the phone and the mobo, putting your troubles to an end. The P55 is Intel's latest midrange chipset and orchestrates things for newer Core i5 / i7 machines. The other two P55 purveyors, ASUS and MSI, were also caught by the bug, and there are anecdotal reports of success with an ASUS BIOS update, but not official fixes as of yet. Given the competitive nature of this market, though, we'd be surprised if those two companies didn't quickly follow suit. All's well that ends well, right?
it's still in beta... I'd rather not flash to a beta BIOS yet.
Most if not all Gigabyte boads have DualBIOS so even if the flash does go bad it'll reflash itself from the backup bios. Also atm I'm running a beta F10a BIOS on my board and have not had a single issue. It's better than the last BIOS.
Beta has many different meanings within software, sometimes it means highly unstable and sometimes it means complete without official sanction.
I am currently running a beta Gigabyte BIOS and have been for at least a year. And these days it's relatively trivial to recover from a bad flash, as the above poster mentions.
A beta is a version of software that is usable but may contain some bugs. The bugs imply instability, but in the case of a public beta by a major company it probably just means that it has not been excessively tested. In the Gigabyte download page it states, in referring to the beta status, that a their beta releases are "reliable yet may not include all the features of the final product" and that they are "previewing new features and gathering customer input" for the full release.
i.e. this won't fry your BIOS.
Gigabyte could come off looking like the good guys if they were to help ASUS and MSI to get this issue fixed.
I like Gigabyte. They consistenly make top notch motherboards and while they aren't exactly timely with BIOS updates, when they do arrive they stuff a load of goodies into them. Love my EP45-DS3. 3.2GHz Q6600 @ 1600FSB FTW!
That's why I used a P55 board for my hackintosh. Interestingly, Mac OS X also has the iPhone sync issue on this board...
Well the Latest Bios for Asus Mobo's says
Improve compatibility with some USB device
Although it doesn't say Iphone explicitly I think it is a fix.
Yay Gigabyte.
I'm waiting for news from ASUS :)
Shocked the title doesn't read "Gigaby fixes Windows 7 sync with iPhone", in a similar vain in to the misnamed original article.
Yeah at least they get it right this time around and stop the dirt thrown on windows 7
*Sound but badly spelt comment*
The problem lie in the BIO not in Window 7, it would be like blame Apple for not being able to Sync with Zune.
@k2001
I get your point, but if the Zune had a problem sinking with OS X and there was a program for the Zune on OS X, then it would be Apples fault. Not because they were the one who would have caused the but, but because they take the role of being the vendor for every part of there product line. They assume responsibility for every part of there product line rather then blaming the issue on someone else. Its the advantage of having a mac and the idea behind the "it just works" mentality. (I don't have a mac, probably won't get one. Just willing to admit that there are advantages to having a mac as there are advantages to owning a PC)
Great...
Now can Apple fix the fact that my entire iTunes freezes every time I want to perform a simple iPhone sync? Thanks :)
Well if you have a p55 motherboard that is the problem, exact problem I have I have an Asus motherboard so I'm gonna try out the new bios update when I get home and report back
The weird thing is my motherboard uses the P45 chipset. I didn't think this article applied to my machine specifically, but I'll see if there's an update for my model that fixes this issue. Thanks
just got back home and installed the bios update, now able to sync an iPhone and iPod touch to my computer also running a P7P55D LE motherboard. Andy is right according to the bios update site it was released about a week ago.
Asus released a beta BIOS last week that fixes this on my P7P55D LE motherboard, engadget is a little late to the game here announcing old news and inaccurate news (they said Asus doesnt have a fix yet)
my hp envy 15 is also having issues syncing with my iphone....i hope dt gets fixed soon
Does this mean apple will start shipping the new i5/i7 iMacs?
My Asus P7P55D EVO with the new 0911 bios update fixed all of my iPhone 3GS sync issues.
Well, I have the mobo in question, and I flashed it....
and for some reason it corrupted my boot file, and now it is trying to boot Windows XP. With no XP installed. Great.
Startup file repair didn't work... so back to System Restore... and back to square one. Guess my laptop is good for something...
