We just received a set of screengrabs from an anonymous source giving us a glimpse at what appears to be Google's (and thus, the world's) future interface to its web applications, Gmail in particular. While we were originally tempted to ignore them, communications with the tipster would indicate genuine insider knowledge. Regardless, we can not independently confirm the authenticity of these images. Having said that, the pics demonstrate a more unified apps interface based on
Google's Wave and accessible from any browser (as they are now). Specifically, we're told that "the goal is to provide a consistent experience throughout all Google Apps and blur the line between the browser and the website (e.g. drag and drop, right-click, etc.)." Something that certainly makes sense to us based on what we know about Google's tender approach to its
Chrome browser and its future "lightweight"
Chrome OS. If true then this "work in progress" also hints at the importance of Wave to the future of Google. Then again, it could be just one of many possible interface concepts from Google's burgeoning developer's sandbox.
I'd love to have an invite!

I request engadget editors to create a post for google wave invitations which would serve as a platform/forum to bring together readers with extra invites and the ones who don't have any invites as yet..

Lol really?
So much hate towards gmail, what's the deal?
I don't know how you guys can actually live without threaded emails! Everything else is so damn messy and keeping tracking of the conversation is totally a time waste. The design is simple yes, but it's very effective and easy to use. What webmail layout you guys prefer, MSN's?
I think they are actually referring to the threaded reply system on Google Wave. I think that sucks too..
And also, I am so used to using the tab button to press submit. That is not possible with Wave. The only option to submit with the keyboard is ctrl+enter which gets it to go threaded..
Yeah, no kidding. I honestly can't be bothered to read email without a threaded conversation view anymore.
Google is constantly evolving and may soon see its wonders.
Just looks like a constant look that's. i.e new themes for all the existing apps. I guess they would do that for some consistency anyway, I don't really see any new features from the screens.
Changing the UI on your flagship product puts you at risk of major backlash. See 2007, Office.
All those blue rounded rects. Reminds me of XP. Not a good association.
And I agree with Matthew: I like my gmail the way it is thank you. So there's a problem with cloud computing: no way to keep developers from forcing their 'improvements' on you.
So all the apps will be painfully slow, peg the cpu, won't allow me to add in any contacts, won't give me any invites so I can't use it with my friends & family (going on weeks now) and be generally annoying. Awesome...
it's a fake - these web layouts would be easy to mash together & fake
Well, I've been rocking Wave for a while, and will happily take the new interface over the GMail, so long as they do something about those strange unresponsive scroll bars ...
"Just received" two months ago? The gallery is dated 9/11/09. Also notice the URL is "www.google.com" for all of the pages. It looks to me like a fanboy's pretty user CSS. I'm not saying it looks bad, only that I'm skeptical.
I think the date it's in European format or something, it's 09 the day/ 11 the month/09 year. As some ppl said the url maybe cause of security issues or cause this is a mock up, not a fully developed website, yet.
I really dislike the look and feel of the Wave interface
Looks like fake. Gmail was modified all the time, it cannot be stripped to this.
Most likely fake. See the http://www.google.com url for gmail, the few pixels in search options to the right that seem totally misplaced and the search result "Google Books' Latest Foe" which was posted an hour ago in the screenshot, but is actually dating back from september 20th 09...
I just wish Google would not screw up GMail the same way it does constantly with Google Reader.
I use GMail as my main e-mail UI and frankly all their recent "innovations" required quite a time and tinkering to figure out how to disable. It is much worse with Google Reader where they dumbly disregard all user requests posted in Google Groups (== official support forums) but instead screw up UI about every 3 months.
Probably somebody can introduce Google to Version Control and Release Management?? So that they will not break older, properly functioning versions of their apps with new "innovations" but instead create new versions, allowing the users to migrate gracefully over the time.
I never used gmail because of the threaded style... this might change my mind. But what I dont like is this new fad that email has to be tied into social networking. I dont want my email recipients seeing what I'm doing online!!! Has the world gone mad?? Dont you people value privacy?
This is well overdue!
Ten to 1 it will make the interface worse. For me each new invention makes it worse, because they kid designing it has perfect vision and a 30" screen (and probably a 8 core machine running at 10mhz on each core), the original good groups was great, then the ruined it, by adding a ton of frames. New "app" after new app requires a ton of bloatware javascript, and stylesheets hardcoded to micro fonts because the kid previously referred to has perfect vision.
As far as i am concerned google are doing evil, because they don't give a shit about readable interfaces.
Instead of focusing on Google's readable interface...how about posting something that is just readable?

I just wish Google would let you customize the damn link bar on www.google.com I don't use video. I don't use shopping. I rarely use maps. News I use. But if I had the option of the top 7 it would be
Web, Gmail, Calendar, Voice, Docs, Groups, Wave, MORE
As it stands the list is annoying because its what Google wants not what I want and please not iGoogle. Blasted thing is too busy.
Amen!
These are obviously fake. Look at the URL in the browser URL bar. It is http://google.com/ in all of the pictures. Does gmail have the same url as the google home page? How about the search results page? No. Someone just had a little fun in Photoshop!
I call B.S. The mock is inconsistent in several ways already pointed out (url + wave scrollbars on gadgets but browser scrollbars on window). And even further, the scrollbar is a Windows 7 scrollbar... no one has upgraded their primary machine to run Windows 7 and the vast majority of Google designers use Macs.
The scrollbars are two different things one moves the whole page and the other the "wave" windows, they can coexist together. I believe the scrollbar from vista and 7 are the same but correct me if I'm wrong.
Ladyguenwyvar,
Please send me a invitation of wave.
I will really appreciate it.
