Sprint Palm Pixi unboxed on video
Oop, looks like the crew at WireFly didn't get the memo on the Sprint Palm Pixi launch -- they've gone ahead and posted up an unboxing video a week ahead of official availability on the 15th. Nothing too unexpected here, but honestly, what were you expecting for $100? Video after the break.
[Thanks, bnm]
Update: Looks like the original video was pulled away from the public eye, but that didn't stop us from finding another. Check it after the break!

will be mildly successful, mostly female buyers.
I want to rate you down for your sexist comment... but my mom wants one... ~_~;
You saying my comment is sexist actually makes you the sexist. You cannot possibly know my reasoning or intent, however you assumed thus revealing your own cards, nice.
Brandon, you killed it with your reply. He refuted his own argument.
It's not the intent of your statement that matters, it's what readers perceive.
thus justifying the desire for a response and clarification
Why is the poster getting ranked down?!?! He just made a comment about the projected market. If you don't think that the company analyzed the people who would most likely buy their product then you have another thing coming. Saying that female buyers will be common is no worse than saying teens will buy sidekicks.
bit of a drama queen eh Brandon? me thinks you'll be getting a Pixi.
now that I can appreciate, fair humor, good one :)
well he's probably right. i mean they named it the pixi. how many men do you know that get exited when they here "Pixi".
$100? Seems like a good deal!
Yes, it does SEEM like a good deal for the hardware. However, given the $60-100 monthly bill you'll be getting to go along with it, it might makes sense to disregard the hardware cost, and just get the best device you can get.
Over the course of two years, the lower price of the Pixi will only account for 5% (or less) of the total cost of ownership. I think most people will be better served by a slightly more expensive device with better specs, such as the Pre, or either of Sprint's Android phones (HTC Hero or Samsung Moment).
drop 50 in three month
gawblessyou. most uncanny thing, it almost sounded like that sneeze was a sentence!
just a cheaper version
Looks pretty good, like it better than the Pre already.
so sad. so much potential in the OS. But I have to hand it to Palm's hardware design. It looks cool, and powerful, like the Pre did in all those photo shoots. Till you get it in the palm of your hand. Like an All Muscle Comic Hero Actor, till you realize they're only 4'9". Those commercials are so misleading, a model holding the Pre while sitting on a rock. Turn's out she's sitting on a pebble and she's actually a dwarf midget.
Pixi: Now with an even smaller, even less usable keyboard...
Cheap fones for losers
And the award for the crappiest comment of the day goes to to....
fade! fade i say!
@Travis...
So what you're saying is that Sprint should rename the phone TRAVIS?
OH SNAP!
Why downgrade from Pre?
2MP Camera? WTF??????
No VGA camcorder
No WIfi - MAJOR FAIL!!!
Where is the Secondary Cam for the Video 3G Call?
No slots for expansion
No Digital Compass
No Flash Browser
My comments maybe crappy but this will one of the crappiest phone you would ever own. Please tell palm they are still living in stone age.
Where is the Secondary Cam for the Video 3G Call?
No Digital Compass

-----------------------------------------------------
WTF are you talking about? Iphone fanboi much?
LOL people really love backward technology...People please wake up and realize Palm Pre is not even close to iPhone.
If Palm can't stay relevant, why compete?
If I can get a Droid Eric for 100 bucks, why would I ever gravitate towards Sprint and the Pixie? Hell, can't you get a Pre for way less than 200 bucks anyway? The Pixie seems out of date before it's even out.
*Eris, not Eric. The Droid Eric isn't out yet, but it'll blow your mind.
Overall cost of ownership is lower on the Pixi/Sprint than the Eris/Verizon. Unless you need more than 450 minutes per month to landlines during weekdays, Sprint is $70 for everything you'll ever need.
I'd take Pixi over a rebadged-Hero anyday, the Pre vs Droid would be a tougher battle, but personally I like WebOS better
You guys, you guys, I would LOVE...a Cartman phone...puff puff
Does this mean other websites have received Palm Pixi already, but they are still under embargo on doing unboxing/review vids?
Does this mean that Engadget staff are already playing with the Pixi??
Engadget should have a spell check feature for you!!.....
@ crazy WIN
Meh
I swear to god Miles, if you can post just one worthwhile comment, I will send you money.
Engadget, delete this account. More than half of his damn posts is just trollin. God, he types like he's five.
back on topic, this phone is more pleasing to my eye than the palm pre. A lot of people that I know enjoy the form factor. I just hope that palm releases the gsm version soon, so it actually starts gaining momentum.
Might seem pointless, but for Treo 680 & Centro users, it's a godsend.
Damn, you beat me to it.
That's actually an interesting thought. I wonder what the main feature differences between this and an old centro are. I mean, obviously its WebOS vs PalmOS, but I wonder what the basic feature differences are between the OSes, because hardware wise, the Centro and the Pixi seem the same.
Never thought of it that way, but you hit the nail on the head.
Although no Wifi kills it for me. Damnit.
Ooohh GOD Palm, you were so awesome once, and then awesome gave way to weird little keyboards and ball-bearing navi buttons fit only for robots, the pinnacle of which was the Centro, the best phone that nobody could ever use!!
Is it just me-- or do the cards / OS seem to be much quicker. I currently have a Pre and definitely experience more lag. Is it cause I have a lot of stuff loaded into it, or is this WebOS 2.0 showing better speed? I hooope.
1. It's running 1.3(.1?).
2. It does look faster. It has a slower processor, but has a smaller screen. I'm just curious as to how those even out. We won't have to wait very long though; the Pre is supposed to be getting the WebOS update sometime this week.
Don't tell me I can't get it with SERO either.
I would get it if it's SERO compatible but I hate the fact that there is no WiFi, Come on it is almost 2010. The Verizon Eris which has a better OS, hardware and Wifi is the same price. But I guess Sprint in the long run is cheaper, the problem is: they know it.

8 minutes?!
Why can't Palm release a phone with a 3.5 screen. On screen keyboard. Were are in the year 2009. Lower than 3.2 is crap. Very hard to browse.
Release it to more GSM carriers already...
wow every one is copying androids face-book integration i guess its a good concept why not
copying??? everyone has been working on facebook for their phones ... your phone HAS to do facebook well or a lot of people won't even look at it ... it has nothing to do with Android.
i dunno last time i remembered htc was the first with the hero could be wrong though then others followed
well anyways shush im speaking after looking back it seems palm was first following android hero google liked the idea and announced 2.0 would have social networking soon after devices starting popping up announcing social networking features then the Motorola click arrived with a full array of social networks and was adding more time line starts from way back on engadget post with palm synergy adding face-book contacts
Palm was first. They debuted WebOS with Facebook integration. It was a feature they showed almost a year ago when they announced WebOS. The Palm Pre has had Facebook integration since launch in June. The new version just has improved Facebook integration, showing status updates in the individual contact cards. Everyone else copied it from Palm.
Palm Pre Sprint exclusivity = FAIL
Android is finally rolling out big time because of Verizon. I think Palm has missed their window of opportunity.
I saw the Pre at the store the other day and I really like it. However the lag kills it. I don't like the sluggish feeling at even opening the dialpad. The build quality didn't impress either. But I really like the Pre and wouldn't mind having it. It was super fun to use for the few minutes that I used it. I wish the Palm OS line would have bigger screens though.
I agree with you on the build quality, but apart from that the pre is great. I have the UK one, running 1.1.3 which is crap, but it runs fine for me, not sluggish at all. Plus there is a new update to improve speed on the way soon.
Actually, the Palm Pre does not have a problem with the build quality. We bought 2 Palm Pre phones in June 2009, and have been using it for about five months now – both work perfectly. The initial manufacturing issues were fixed in August.
Two things here though, Palm should have used the same back cover that comes with the Touch Stone charger. It is much nicer and feels more durable than the one that ships with the Palm Pre. It just makes the Palm Pre look more like the quality device it is. The good news is that you can buy it. It also prevents the Pre from slipping or sliding when you put it on your desk. And it makes the Palm Pre feel much nicer in your hands.
The second point that everyone seems to get wrong is that the Pre is designed with a slight degree of flexibility. What that means is that the top screen module and the bottom keyboard module are allowed to have a slight degree of flexibility which means that you can slightly twist the two parts. This is not a build quality problem; it is common to all Palm Pre phones, and thus a design and construction feature.
no headset?
:(
We all know you deliberately spelled "craftsmanship" wrong. Cut the crap, why don't you.
Good-luck with that buddy
WebOS already had facebook in synergy back at CES in January 09... How could it hhave copied the Hero???? Makes no sense. Anyway this is exciting. App Catalog is out of beta next month and WebOS 1.3 is coming this week. Exciting stuff.
Sprint exclusivity is going to put Palm out of business.
The Pre the Pre the Pre the Pre the Pre
I'm too lazy to look thus up, but specs wise, how does this phone compare to any of the newer blackberries(Tour, bold, etc...)? It just seems like with wifi, faster processor, and maybe a better camera though not completely necessary this could be a worthwhile BB competitor.
DOA.
Palm would have been better off refreshing the Pre to fix the build & keyboard issues, to sell one model at a lower cost ala iPhone 3GS/iPhone 3G.
Game over.
Palm PRE is a great phone, I upgraded from an iphone 3G and it does seem like I upgraded :) except battery life which seems shorter than my iphone. I guess shorted battery life is to be expected since it is running several programs all the time and has a replaceable battery as opposed to iphone. I intend to buy the 2600 mAH battery for my PRE (even though it will add some bulk to the PRE).
I have no isses with build quality it seems solid to me (bought one a month ago).
PIXI may have seemed like a nice idea at the time of conception and the for the most part it does deliver. I am disappointed with the no wifi aspect and I believe it could have been made a bit thicker with a bigger battery but I guess thats what after market batteries are for.
To give Palm some credit, may be for the demographic they are aiming for research may have showed no wifi is needed or desired at this point in time.
This phone or rather PALM should switch to AT&T or verizon.. they'd definitely be a threat then. These two phones are schweet!
Why won't Palm make any GSM phone for the United States. I really want to buy a Pixi with Wifi and GSM.
Some people do NOT want WiFi on their phones (not me, but I know a lot of people who use a phone for... "A phone"). So if it has no WiFi,some people iwll just not care.
as a pre owner, i noticed right away that the pixi doesn't come with the microfiber pouch or headphones? i can understand the pouch, but headphones are kind of a big deal...the phone looks great and speedy, keyboard looks tons better, but the smaller screen kills it for me and looks cramped..again, it's because i use the pre everyday and got used to the bigger screen. i also use the mirror in the back of the pre quite often too, and give it to the ladies so that they don't have to reach into their purses and stuff so its handy. the 2mp camera is kind of a let down in this day and age, not very competitive.
