The NCube: probably the best portable Gamecube of all time (video)
Oh sure, we've seen a few "portable" Gamecube systems over the years, but we've yet to set our eyes on anything as glorious as this. Not surprisingly, the NCube's creator is yet another Ben Heck apprentice, with the case being a heavily modded Datamax Kid's Delight and the display an unmodded Zenith PSone. There's a 2-way switch for running off of batteries or the AC outlet, a relocated memory card slot and a rear-mounted disc drive that's just begging to be broken. Hit the read link for a look at 90 grueling hours of work, or just jump past the break for a celebratory video.

its got nipples.
Nipples makes everything better.
Its got DUAL ANALOG STICKS.
DUAL ANALOG STICKS make everything better.
I'd pay $250 for this before I would for a PSP GO.
lol I am making a portable console (ala ben heck) with dual sticks, I will give you a call....
dude reminds me of RedneckTechie:

@ Whitecollarcriminal
He charges $700 minimum for these mods though...
Whitecollarcriminal:
$250 - $40 for a used gamecube = $210.00
Let's pretend all the other parts were free, grown on a mod tree given lots of TLC, so it's $210.00 for 90 hours of labor.
I'm sure he appreciates the $2.33 an hour you think his time is worth. :-p But in reality it's a lot less, since I only know the price of one part.
THIS GUY IS ON FAMILY GUY!!!!
"You want a popsicle?"
Wow, I'm not sure that 90+ hours was worth it. That thing is sort of hideous and pretty much the same size as a regular gamecube console (albeit, without a screen and not portable).
Umm... have you seen a GameCube before? You could fit 3 of these in one of those :P
I think it's a pretty nice build with the exception of the disc drive as it is now.
I looks like a dreamcast
it's not about playing gamecube games on the bus, its about proof of concept and the satisfaction of completing a project
wtf so the disc drive is exposed what?
Exactly you cant even rest it on your leg or the disc will cut "it" off.
That also makes storage a problem! How to you prevent damage to the Lense or spindle?
$700 for an unfinished project is a ripoff. He needs to make some sort of cover, even if it is just a hinge, and latch manual cover!
The disc can't cut your leg off. Seriously you can stop it with one finger.
And I am trying to make a cover but I haven't found a way to make one that looks good yet.
Get Super Smash Bros Melee on it and i'm sold.
Ahhh Wind Waker ... I remember the good old days when Nintendo used to make great games ...
When did they stop?
they never did
Holy crap, that disc drive is full of fail
And here you sit with no gamecube portable device while he sits atop his chair of win and laughs at everyone making comments such as this. You're looking at this like a product that will be on shelves in a month.
I was just thinking the same thing. It's just that the lens is so vulnerable in its current state. When it fails (which it inevitably will) he will have a lot of extra work taking it apart and soldering in a new drive. Everything else is brilliant and I'm quite envious but for the love of god please cover up the most delicate part of the device.
I liked it until I saw the back. It doesn't matter how good -part- of your mod looks when you half-ass it like that. If he had no other choice he should have at least used a hack/mod to load the games from a HDD or flash memory.
...Which still isn't to say it's not impressive. A great deal of work must have gone into this, but the end result is still weak.
Well next time I will make it more like yours. Oh yea you haven't made one now have you?
No sir, I have not made one, and I have no doubt that you have a shit load more skills and talent than I do. However, like the others said, how do you set this thing down without hurting up a loaded disc? It's a very weak link in your otherwise awesome chain.
I actually have a plate stand that I set it on. Works just like a display stand. I can even set it on the stand while it's running. And I am trying to make a cover but everything I have tried looks like crap and that won't do. So it is a work in progress.
Thinking about my comments now... I'm not sure why I turn into some critical asshole on the internet. I apologize for my hasty comments. Hailrazer, thank you for sharing your work with us.
Hey gamecube, im really happy for you, and im going to let you finish, but the Ncube is the best portable gamecube of all time.......
"im going to let you finish"? I think you're giving Kanye a bit too much grammatical credit.
Looks comfortable.
RESPECT !! U R THE MAN :)
No love for the real x y a b buttons?
No I really disliked the Gamecube buttons. They were very odd shaped and different sizes. Notice how almost EVERY other console controller has 4 regular buttons :)
The only game I truly loved on Gamecube was Zoo Cube. I'd pay $15 for that on XBL in a heartbeat :(
Congrats on finishing the project. Revision 2 can work on the aesthetics.
Wasn't expecting this thing to be quite that big. It's pushing the bounds of portable, but still I have to respect the man for the modding time put in. Seriously, I looked at the video and hoped that those hands belonged to an Oompa Loompa, or one of the Lolly Pop Guild.
Impressive. Not for me, but damned impressive.
Where do I plug in my Broadband adaptor to play PSO Online?
He really likes the words "severely modify". Whats wrong with normal modify?
Well, if he only normally modified things, it would a a P.O.S, his severe mods allowed him to make a severely awesome portable.
this is tight
Um...where's the L/R triggers? Besides that, perty cool.
They're on the back... he shows them in the video.
why not go with a nice oled screen? honestly a ps1 flip screen???? geeez he must b on a tight budget
Really, man? I mean, really? If he could afford to have an OLED screen made for that, he could probably afford to have the whole thing manufactured from scratch too. . . Lets look at this, PSOne screen - $50, Custom 5 inch OLED screen - ~$1500
A PSP with CFW can do the same thing.
Really a PSP with Cfw can play Gamecube games? Idiot.
Auto-Focus is killing me.
What the hell did he do to the ABXY buttons‽‽ NOOOOO! It was perfect the way it was. How dare he!
I denounce this being a portable "gamecube." This is an abomination and he should die in a fire. Again.
Game memory transfer? :(
This is a nice mod. Great work.
Heck trains them right. This ain't no R2D2 toy with console guts jammed into it.
Added a disc drive cover. Don’t know if I am 100% satisfied with it. But it works perfectly and the clear look is cool.
