Dual-screen enTourage eDGe ebook reader gets a little hands-on time
We're still reserving our doubts about the viability of the enTourage eDGe -- after all, at $490 you can buy yourself a respectable netbook and a halfway decent ereader for the appropriate occasion -- but we won't say that we're not interested. Just under a month after it hit the scene, the dual-screen device has landed (in prototype form) over at Gearlog, and while some of the features weren't functional, the physical build shouldn't change much when it goes final. At first glance, the whole thing just looks a bit dated, but then again, we've still got the ultra-fresh Nook on the brain. Hit the read link to have a look yourself, won't you?

id buy that bitch
I wouldn't pay a cent for the horribly looking bitch!
that's one chunky expensive bitch
It's not actually ugly, it does look dated, as the news says, which gives it cute a retrofuturist feel. It's like E-Ink, color screen and gigabytes of memory invading the 90's.
Amazing how it resembles this organizer from back then : http://cdecas.free.fr/computers/pocket/pd5000.php
The aesthetics of the entourage edge are kind of growing on me. However, I would prefer a more "professional" look. Hopefully in their second iteration they'll fix/add:
Longer battery life (it's meant for students it should last a complete day of note taking/reading/lectures/etc.
Smaller Bezel
Option to just have an e-ink only device, or a lcd only device. Optimally just use a pixel qi screen (or 2).
Keep this all at a price point of about $500 and I'm sold. I figure by the end of 2010 or early 2011 this should be doable.
Every duel screen ebook reader I see makes me more anxious for the MS courier.
MS Courier, developed by the Division of Vaporware of Microsoft.
Sorry, but it is hard to create a new gadget when they are firing personal, specially when they are firing personal from s&r.
:-P
Are there any options out there for just the e ink note taking side? I'd love to be able to take notes on a surface like that.
This thing is ugly, but seems very functional. Courier is looking better and better...
Courier!@!
Yeah it is called the iRex DR 800SG and it is shipping sometime this month for $400. Nicer looking than this thing in my opinion. iRex is also a bit more well known for super high end e-readers. A bit spendy in my opinion, but is essentially the same thing, matte screen with a wacom digitizer..
It's not quite a courier, but the e-ink display is a nice touch that the courier won't have (assuming it ever comes out).
cool dude!
It looks like the Leapfrog version of the Courier
Exactly what I was thinking......
My First Courier by Fisher Price :-)
I think once tablets like Windows Couriers and ePapers hit the market, these ebook readers will be disappeared.
The Wacom digitizer under the eInk display does it for me. You guys see an expensive ereader/smartbook, I see a cheap alternative to an iRex Libre.
the iRex DR 800SG is coming out this month, still $400 but way cheaper than the Libre, and cheaper than this thing (though less functional)
the e-ink part should have been detachable.
@ htd- I agree. Why doesn't this exist as a stand alone product?
This would look like a winner to me if it weren't for.. its looks. I dislike large bezel areas around screens in general, but on this device, it looks like there's half a screen's width separating the two screens, which just seems too much for reading like a normal book.
Apart from the bezel, it is a decent looking device.
As I hear it will have a Cortex A8 based Marvell Armada processor so it seems to be powerful enough for decent browsing.
at $500, it is not very expensive for a dual 10" smartbook/ereader if both functions work reasonably.
By the way: Their website says that in the ereader-only mode the battery runtime is 16hours. That may be enough for a student for a whole day.
With a spare battery, you may even last a full day with frequent sue of the smartbook functions.
Huh, when I saw older stories of this, my vaporware alarms went off full blast... This actually surprises me a little bit.
I'd still rather get an Alex.
If you could take notes directly onto the Alex I would too, but this offers way more functionality.
I'm looking forward to 2.0 having a smaller bezel...
The article talks about the difference between the working prototype and the final build. What are the odds the end product has a more attractive bezel/button situation? If it does, the e-ink battery life side makes this give courier a run for its money.
I think the bezel is a good idea! If you think about it the bezel can be used as a rest for your arm while you are using the pen input on the device.
they sure beat M$ and Asus out with the form factor but not sure about with the software though...
I like the concept. It looks pretty useful in college. I hope other companies put their own out, ideally sleeker looking and with an OLED display instead of LCD. I would definitely get one later in the future.
Bevel should be farther from the screen-edge, it looks cramped this way.
