Emotiv EPOC human-computer interface supposedly on track to ship next month
Remember that Emotiv EPOC mind-controlled USB controller from last year? Well, we've been dreaming of controlling a game of pong with merely our thought waves ever since, and it looks like our wish might at last be granted. According Emotiv's site, the $299 headgear will be shipping in limited quantities to US customers on December 21st, just in time for your thoughts of the holidays to coalesce into a concentrated, computer-controlling tip. The device works with 14 "saline sensors" applied to the head, in addition to a gyroscope for controlling a camera or cursor, and it comes with the "EmoKey" software to define keyboard shortcuts to be activated by your various expressions and thoughts. Will computer use ever be the same? Yes, probably.

Wow, reminds me of Kathryn Bigelow's "Strange Days"
So how much longer tell we get Data Input vs Data Output?
I can carry nearly eighty gigs of data in my head.
we don't get a lot of that around here, Just Johnny. kinda upscale for us
Does DROID do this?
Something about Crysis....
Emokey software? So that means your computer will start having urges to cut itself with keys?
Dammit you beat me to it!!!
Does this so called "EmoKey" slice your wrist for you???
Vapor.
"human-computer interface"...isn't that what a mouse is? Or a keyboard for that matter.
Or a fist? There's been a few times where i've had to reprogram a computer with one.
Uh huh, a year or two from now Google will buy this, put it on the back burner, relaunch it a year later for free, and start storing all your brain patterns. I'm not normally paranoid but that seems hella plausible to me.
I don't get what part you are paranoid about though
you aren't paranoid, but ppl that are will misunderstand you, so better don't mention things like that, they will freak out and go bonkers on everyone...
JUST LET ME PLAY A DAG NAMIT FPS WITH THIS!!!!!!!!!!! NO MORE EYE TWITCHES AND MOOD SHIFTS TO JUST WALK AROUND!!!
And now you won't have to press capslock to talk in all caps
Okay, a couple others:
The EmoKey pushes itself just to feel.
The EmoKey is not functional, because it is always "depressed."
Resistance is futile, you will be assimilated!
"EmoKey"? If I use it while listening to Promise Ring, will my computer explode?
seriously though? count me in. for 300$ i would pay just to experiance my brainwaves actually MAKING stuff happen.
Its kinda scary though... one day it will become the universal standard, and emotions wont mean anything anymore they'll just be used to make computers do stuff. just saying.
Now u can pause, play, FF, and RW your pr0n without getting the keyboard, remote or mouse dirty.
Up until that comment I had no desire to get it. That should be the sales pitch in the commercials
...this? Win.
A friend of mine is attempting to write a mouse control application that uses this thing for his senior research. I'm curious to see if it works once he gets a sample device.
Just fantasizing but if Sony released one of these for the ps3 lk 2-3 yrs after the wands then that would murder any console!*opinion
Looks like the next Wii interface device is on it's way.
This thing looks SO good! just imagine...we won't need a keyboard and a mouse to play games anymore! I hope it really works as they presented it... it's not even that expensive! can't wait :)
this would be great for people that are paralyzed from the neck down.
that seems like the primary use. maybe it's not perfect... but it's better than nothing
The primary goal is as in interface for entertainment - games, they are pushing that first so they can increase funds and later branch out with more refined models to help industry and people with paralysis.
They have already stated that the system isn't really suited to FPS games because of latency caused by signal processing.
There is an old article (link below), which compares several "Brain-Computer Interfaces" and has a good section on this device, some cool videos are linked too.

This plus a game of world of goo and I'm down. Minesweeper even.
The thing is not as good as you think it is. It just monitor your muscle activity like blinking, smile, frowning, etc. (That's where the 'emo' came from). I would imagine your face would be very sore after a while from the constant contraction of your facial muscles (which are relatively weak).
I think there's been a similar device released a couple years back for games but never caught up because it's so hard to get a consistent reading from your face and it's just damn weird to use.
Oh yea, the device released years ago was called Neural Impulse Actuator released by OCZ.
Well, it does monitor some muscle impulses, but it also does EEG readings as well in addition to gyro sensors for head tracking.
I've already gotten to play around with this, one of my fellow mates at the hackerspace I'm a part of has had his for about a month. Its pretty damn cool
I pre-ordered one of these a couple of years ago... Can't wait to finally play with it.
My office got one of these a couple weeks ago. I played around with it, and after 10 minutes of testing I was able to push, pull, lift, and drop a 3D cube. That was with minimal program training, mind you. I'm excited as to the possibilities of this technology down the line.
I thought OCZ Neural Impulse Actuator does this already for a while... at least a year. And is so much cheaper. Unless I'm misunderstanding what this does differently...
I've been using the OCZ NIA (Neural Impulse Actuator) for a couple years now and it already does all this - and very well, I might add. Once you get the hang of it (takes about a month of regular use), using it to do stuff like issue commands in R6:Vegas, Arma2, and Operation Flashpoint:Dragon Rising kicks copious amounts of ass.
I've tried this device during the product demonstration.
was able to master a couple of moves in a minute.
unique experience.
