Palm Pixi seen running webOS 1.3.1 on video
We've already seen a quick Palm Pixi unboxing and hands-on video, but we're guessing most folks are looking for a bit more than that in the lead-up to launch day. Thankfully, YouTube user stayfly2407 has come through with a video that, for the first time, clearly shows the Pixi running webOS 1.3.1, which may or may not be the version the phone actually ships with -- it was only just recently seeded to developers. The video unfortunately doesn't show any new features associated with this version, however, but it does seem to be speedy enough even in spite of the Pixi's slower processor. Head on past the break to see for yourself.

Does it work on SERO?
*plays with his LG Prada* What's all the hubub guise? :u
There appears to be a problem with the comment system. Surprise.
My wife is going to be very happy with her phone new phone next week.
BOOOO broncos SUCK...
anyways preware + 1.3.1 = EPIC
By time you finish watching this clip the price has dropped to $0.99
who would want to carry around a device named "pixi"
why not just ask us men to carry around a purse and compact.
@Nam
You sound like you've got issues, mate.
If you are seriously worried about your masculinity because of what your phone is named you should wait until you are out of middle school before getting a smartphone.
Dude, if you're judging your or any other man's level of 'manliness' by the phone that is being used -- I think you have bigger issues to worry about.
Yeah man, having a pixie in yer pocket would be hot eh, they are more cheeky than fairies you know, could get a bit during meeting.
I know the Palm fanboys won't like me saying this, but it seems quite laggy to me.
are there Palm fanboys?
It was a little laggy, but he had the youtube app open, which tends to do that on the Pre too.
I hope there are Palm fanboys out there, there are only 3 major American cell phone companies left, Palm(in recovery), Motorola(in recovery), and Apple(gay). So I hope people band behind one of the American cell phone companies cus we need to do something to not see it totally leave this country.
I am pretty much a palm fanboy. never was until i had a gazillion n series nokias, an apple 3gs & then the palm. it just does exactly what i want in a very elegant way.
that said: pre & pixi appear to be equally laggy. not good.
still no video recording, no real decent applications (where's my chipotle ordering app?) & their stock's being downgraded. not good.
really hope verizon puts some energy behind it. DROID just looks too industrial for mainstream. iPhone's single app paradigm is very frustrating. Nokia's just totally floundering.
I'm a guy and I actually like the Pixi. It's got everything I want.
3.5 mm headphone jack, camera, QWERTY keyboard & touchscreen...all with a seamless WebOS experience.
Additionaly, If they have a touchstone charger for it (I absolutely love my Blackberry Bold docking station), i'd take 1.
Yup, my wife and I will both get these when they are released. I cannot fathom how someone would avoid a phone because of the name.
i read somewhere, it can use the touchstone device as the back cover already supports it. you just need to purchase the touchstone separately. sorry if u already knew that, but ur comment sounded like you were wondering if it was able to or not.
Wrong, you'll still need to buy a separate Touchstone back for the Pixi. The Touchstone capability will be built into the designer series covers as well as an aftermarket black cover.
The one that comes with the Pixi is not Touchstone-capable.
i think this phone might fit my wife... android doesn't seem refined enough yet for the non-techy user, although my hero's pretty sweet for me.
And, by SERO I mean the SERO F&F 500 plan (The $29.99 plan). Not those other ones that are now $59.99 or $79.99. I mean the one that Sprint made a huge mistake in offering and can't get people like me off of them because they give to much for so little...... :-) And, I want more! the Hero, the Pixi, something!
They don't let you use SERO for the Pre, and I'm assuming the Pixi. My monthly bill has gone up from $37 to $71 after making the switch to the Pre from the HTC Touch Pro. Ouch.
Is there any way I can get that sprint plan??
It ships with 1.2.9, and then upgrades to 1.3.1 when activated.
I love the form factor, but the performance is incredibly lackluster. :( boo
How is the performance lackluster?? Did you even watch the video?
Looks pretty lagtastic. I'd spend the extra cash and get the Pre if I was on Sprint.
I tried the palm pixi - wasn't impressed but it is always good to have choices. It seems like the secretaries I support like it but the guys don't. I wish Sprint would consider some high end phones like the HD2 along with the low end phones like the pixi.
You do realize the Pixi isn't out yet?
Yes- that is why I posted the correction - which is the very next line down but frequently I mess up on replies with engadget I think it will be a reply but it ends up as a new comment thread.
Ah, didn't see that. Touche.
My bad - I meant to say the palm pre.
The performance is actually really good out of the box but not in this video. Palm suggests only running about 4 apps for optimal performance and in this video they have 6 open. Plus the App Catalog really hogs resources compared to other apps. The Pixi has a slower chipset than the Pre so... WebOS 1.3.1 I Think will be pretty fast.
I have an image to protect. I cannot be laughed at...ever! I am a VERY VERY VERY VERY sensetive person and anytime someone does not see me as a total badass I go into a corner and cry my eyes out.
i heard you have woman parts.
Ya if I did that would be sexy time YAAAAA....
I hate to say I can't see this thing taking off. I loved my Treos back in the day, but in this vastly changed mobile scene the Pre (and to a greater extent the Pixi) don't seem to fill any kind of tangible niche. Its not likely to be picked up by many businesses as WinMo, BB and increasingly the iPhone have been, it doesn't have the perceived sex appeal of the iPhone for the average Joe, and it doesn't have the dev/techie following of Android. With iPhone slowly ditching its exclusivity deals, I think Palm are going to have one tough battle on their hands.
It's going after the Centro market, not the Treo market. Despite it not being focused at us, the people who read this site, the Pixi will probably do very well, if the Centro's sales figures are anything to go by, it sold a few million units.
You do realize that to this point, no one, other than you, has even mentioned an iPhone or an iPhone-killer.
Considering how dog slow my Pre was, I hope they've done some major optimizations in 1.3.1 for the slower Pixi.
I would also like my emails to sync on 1xRTT without it telling me that I have no new emails when I'm physically looking at them.. I wanted to like the Pre, I honestly did. I just can't justify it though.
yeah I know, but now you've said it too hehehe
I don't think you guys understand how the average consumer thinks. I could tell a teen girl that this black camera is $99 and far better than the $149 camera. They'll simply say "but the $149 one is sooo cuuuuuuute".
People of all ages and genders commonly buy things based upon aethestics. I like my Pre a lot, but I can see how someone would like an all form Pixi. I bet a lot of Centro users will make the jump to the Pixi.
I just wish Palm would hurry up and open to other carriers. WebOS is far too amazing to be locked down to just Sprint, and they need the market share.
Sad too 'cause the Pre's camera is very fast. One of the best things about the phone, really is the camera. It's way faster than any Nokia 5mp. Fast as the iPhone but has a flash. & back loads so you can do really fast shots. Sadly it's not autofocus, but fixed focus. Works most of the time, however.
One thing to look forward to is when they finally optimize the WebOS to use the GPU rather than the CPU for visual stuff, to offload the work, and make it snappier.
But does the Pixi have a GPU like the Pre?
The Pixi has 8Gb of internal memory like the Pre?
