Rock Band played with a flute, awesome redefined (video)
Maybe we're just overreacting to a rhythm video game played with real musical skill, but this one's not to be missed. What we have on hand here is a flute, a rather quirky girl, and a microphone-equipped copy of Rock Band, which accepts aural tones as well as button mashes for input. The result of this eclectic combination is a 98% accuracy score, but how she gets there is the truly awesome part. Video's after the break, and be patient -- action doesn't pick up until a minute into it, but once it starts you'll be glued till the end.

makes me think of American Pie somehow
this one time at band camp
I has thinking the same when i has watching the movie, "This one time, in Band Camp...".
The girl has some skills...
I want to see a trombone player try that. Make sure to get it on video so we can laugh when you smash the screen with your slide, though.
Okay, I didn't see those previous posts before writing my post. To clarify . . .
I want to see someone try this playing-a-real-instrument thing on TROMBONE.
I do NOT want to see a trombone player f$&% an apple pie.
I have to say, a trombone player will know how much room he needs to play, That's like saying I want to see a tuba player walk through a doorway so they smash into it. . .
Not some of the trombone players I teach.
Here's your trombone player doing it (from 2008, no less):

Even better...here's another flutist playing Blue Oyster Cult!

However, this guy isn't nearly as attractive as the last girl... :)
FTW!!!!!
And today is her birthday! Happy Birthday Danielle!
THEY STOLE MY IDEA, they just made it terrible!
View my past comments. I said this a whiiiiiile ago!

BOOM! >_>
That was beautiful.
I hope she makes more if these.
Hey, kids! Want to "try this at home?"
All you need is a MIDI file of the song you're doing and some music notation software (your band director probably has Finale or Sibelius or something similar).
Open the MIDI in the program, delete all the staves except the vocal part, and print!
Then, get your butt in the practice room.
(I'm over-simplifying, of course. Knowing how a lot of MIDIs are, you'll probably have to do a lot of clean-up-- key signature changes, correcting crazy rhythmic parts, etc-- before printing.)
Yep I agree with you, it was beautiful. Here is her second video Today by Smashing Pumpkins. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H_8dHVuY1qM
She can blow on my instrument anyday...

The Onion did a piece on Sousaphone Hero a while back. That site's blocked at work though, so I can't put the link in here other than to say: onion.com

My name is Ron Burgundy and I approve of this commercial.
@ Philip:
"Guess what?! I got a fever, and the only prescription... is more cowbell!" Wouldn't that be a great slogan? Cowbell hero Bruce Dikinson version.
Myself, I'd prefer Didgeridoo Hero. Just Finished DJ Hero in a week.....
What next? I'm sicking tired of this Rock Band goggles... get a real life, get a real guitar and became the new Elvis! :)
dude get over yourself. tired of hearing people like you. I play guitar(not very good yet but im learning), and i still play rock band. NOBODYS claiming that this is like playing a real instrument. at best it teaches you rhythm. so shut up already. at worst it geets people interested in music. learn to enjoy yourself. sheesh
Umm, she was using a real instrument? Who peed in yer wheaties?
Sorry guys, I ran out of places to go!
And I've been playing guitar for about 5 years now and love rock band...does spewing this bullshit help you validate your life somehow? I really want to know..
Wait, did you just equate real guitar playing with Elvis?
I like that song anyway. But that's just.. ...effin sweet. would like to actually take and remove the vocals and mix the track with the flute. think it would sound awesome.
Maybe the Band, will call her up and get her to guest star on that track. Make a quasi real/rock bandish video and with her floating in a spotlight. Just absolutely Wonderful. The flute is such a great sounding instrument.
great idea and well played :)
but:
wtf is she doing with her eyes?
could you play with a real guitar this way?
Can't see why not. Wanna try it and report back?
I don't think so ... she's playing the flute to match the tone, pitch and notes for the voice track in the song. You MIGHT be able to play the guitar to match the same -- but you wouldn't be playing lead or rhythm as you'd expect from a guitar.
I thought the whole premise of Rock Band was that you *didn't* know how to play the instrument.
Actually knowing how to play the instrument kinda takes the fun out of it...
(she's good, though, and the flute version of the song sounds great!)
You can play any instrument you want as long as it's melodic (not chords) and you play the vocal part. This is because the mic is only good for vocals and--with the exception of Beatles: Rock Band--can only pick up one note at a time (not chords).
So, sorry . . . no go on the playing-the-guitar-part-on-an-actual-guitar. We call that "playing an actual concert."
I can imagine that you can use a MIDI pickup on your guitar to convert the notes to digital notes, that are then played by a pure sine wave synthesizer to maximize tone purity for the mic/line in of the game.
If you route the normal pickup to your amp then, you've got a killer sound.
Stupid mom yelling at her to cut it out @3:31, only if she realized the gift of her daughter possess
Stupid people have no appreciation for music. I bet mom only does it missionary too.
YAZZ FLOOT!@
Zamfir; King of the Pan Flute!
i'd like to hear the flute without the backing music, the harmony of the vocals played on flute has a nice melody! and she is definitely a quirky girl!
Just when you thought Rock Band couldn't get any gayer.. One time, at band camp ...
Seriously though, pretty damn cool...
@ aaron
For posting an dumb-@$$, homo-phobic comment, and then immediatelty recanting it . . .
You sir, are an idiot.
Also, you used the "g" word, so I expect your comment to get deleted by Engadget staff any minute now . . .
It seems obvious, but a lot of trained musicians (classical and otherwise) are out there playing Rock Band. It's a fun rhythm game, period.
I'm a classically trained professional musician (i.e. performing on my instrument is my full-time job) and I can attest to the fact that Rock Band comes out a lot at parties with lots of classical musicians. Musical training helps with the rhythm (musicians take "musicianship" classes all through college and grad school to practice rhythm and sight-singing), but a lot of it has to do with how similar the plastic instruments are to what the people normally play. String players are pretty awesome at the guitars, percussionists are predictably awesome at the drums. Even new players with training can usually start at the harder skill levels and do pretty well.
I wish the game had a creative facet that made people realize that taking the leap from playing a game to playing an instrument isn't that far. Still, it's a really fun rhythm game that gets people excited about music, and it's hard for someone who makes his livelihood on that to be negative about it. Besides, I enjoy playing! When my students mention they play it I get excited - inevitably their rhythmic intuition (not understanding - this has to be trained) improves.
The other thing that few people mention is how Rock Band and Guitar Hero expose kids to the classics*. My students actually know who Motörhead and Cream are now.
*Classic Rock. If only there were an effective way to expose kids to the ACTUAL classics like Beethoven and Bach.
help digg it up!

Nice!
is anybody else in love right now?
[Raises his hand] I am!
Nice TV.
I'm in love!
Thanks for the heads up, I'll TOTALLY shop there now -.-
Beautiful. I always liked the flute - great and fun way to play an already fun game.
(...also, I thought the girl was pretty...=^^=)
Jazz flute is for little fairy boys!!!!

I did this first:

How is this "news"? My students have been doing this for a while with Rock Band. I have like 60+ charts written out for them to play.
Now if Rock Band would just notate the stuff out on the screen, they could have something.....
Dude, where do you have those posted?
I'd be really interested in those as well. A bunch of teacher friends probably would be too.
Well that was pretty damned cool. I didn't know you could do that... O.o
Wow...gold stars...rockband... cute flute player... who could ask for more?
This certainly proves that a flute (or other wind instrument) could be used with another microphone as an input device in a "Rock Band" or "Guitar Hero" game. which can come in handy with songs like Men At Work's "Down Under".
