iPhone gets live Sky Mobile TV, O2 offering 3 months' free access
British satellite TV purveyor Sky has been pushing hard lately to expand into new spheres, a desire marked most clearly by its Sky Player integration with the Xbox 360 Dashboard. Now the company is keeping momentum going with the Sky Mobile TV app for the iPhone. The app itself will come free, but live streaming access to the full selection of Sky news and sports (ESPN included) channels will set you back £6 ($10) a month. That's pretty reasonable value if you're into live Premier League matches, which are typically the highest ticket item on a British TV subscription bill. O2 has sweetened that deal even further by offering a full quarter of a year's worth of free access -- a clear response to Orange's infraction on its iPhone turf. You can only stream via WiFi for now, but you have to agree that, at this price point, it's a definite step in the right direction.

Sky is satellite, not cable.
Sky is mainly satellite, but millions also watch Sky via the cable operators Virgin and Chorus NTL.
Anyway, this app apparently provides ALL "Sky Sports channels, Sky Sports News, Sky News, ESPN and At The Races", including ALL live televised Premier League matches. At £6 per month, that's a pretty good deal...
Rupert Murdoch, is that you?
Strewth, no!
Oh very good choice of team for the picture.
Yes...Arsenal battered them both in the same week!
Wi-Fi Only? Why, Apple, why?
Because it competes with iTunes.
>> "Because it competes with iTunes."
Right... because people are just busting down the door to pay $3 per episode... or $35 for a season of *one* show.
If you like 2 shows, you might as well just subscribe to cable and get a DVR. Then you can get those 2 shows, news, live sports, and everything else.
I'm sure Apple makes money from selling TV shows... but it's clearly not for me... or anyone else I know.
It is O2 who put the WiFi-only limit, and the answer is that the oh so precious 3G networks would get obliterated every time there was a derby on television.
Yeah what's with the Wifi only? - Generally - if I have access to wifi then I am usually close to a plasma screen with the football on it (at home, mate's house, pub, cafe, work etc) . In other words, for me, this is useless. I only need the footage when I am on the go. i.e. using a 3G connection.
Stick your 6 pounds, Sky.
Yeah, I don't see the benefit of this service. Not only does it cost more on my monthly subscription costs (£18 for the full Sky Sports package) but I'm only likely to be able to use it at home when I could just watch it on my television. You might think that this service would be useful when travelling but licensing restrictions mean that you probably won't be able to watch the matches when you are connected to a non-UK ISP. I rather think that Sling looks like a better proposition than this.
Wah, wah, wah, THIS DOESN'T WORK FOR ME THEREFORE IT SUCKS!!!! Jeez.
Getting Sky Sports any other way is £35+/month. I can't get cable and I don't really want to pay through the nose just for Sky Sports - this way I can get them for £6/month. Admittedly it's on a stupidly small screen, but it's a start.
Oh, and Sky - let me just watch it on my PC, kthx!
Sad to see Robbie Keane on the screen & Lucas sucks, why rafa like to play him that often.
It's sad to see Robbie Keane, period.
YNWA
Man, Lucas has been so much better since we played Man U. He was crap at the beginning of this season but he's good now.
Also robbie keane played for Liverpool but he couldn't score a goal to save his life.

Mobile TV is a failure stuff. Only teens might see them. I dont why these p.i.m.p.s put everything into iPhone? They better think some other things to improve the mobile experience.
This is great news but I already subscribe to Sky and their Sky Player add on, so do I get a discount? Also, If I'm somewhere that has decent wifi, I tend to be somewhere I can also watch TV on the big screen. At other times I have to use a wifi "hotspot", the bandwidth is so terrible its barely better than 3G.
Robbie Keane looks hot & horny.
In the UK we can stream live TV for free as well - http://iphone.tvcatchup.com/
thank you SO much!
PS: any live streaming of Dave? :P
Not on the iPhone yet I don't think - you can stream most Freeview channels on a computer (http://www.tvcatchup.com/guide.html) including Dave and Dave ja vu so I'm sure they'll add them to the iPhone sooner or later!
TV Catchup is pretty nice, but you need a very solid 3G connection for it to work. With O2, that's never guaranteed, particularly in big cities full of iPhone users gobbling up bandwidth. It does show though how 3G can stream a pretty decent TV picture when given the chance.
There goes your battery life!!
This is really disappointing content-wise compared to the recent Xbox service. And it costs more, even tho I'm already paying quite a lot to both O2 and Sky every month... at least elements of the 360 service are free to Sky subscribers.
Oh and the app is called bskyb something, which is quite annoying when i was searching for 'sky tv' (and failing) to find it!
What this doesn't tell you is that you have to sign up to Sky - including supplying credit card details - if you want to get the app running. No thanks.
When is BT going to give us a BT Vision app? All the content is there in the cloud already, BT owns most of the CDN and back-end infrastructure used by mobile carriers in the UK, and it'd be super easy to do.
ah...the advantages of being an iphone user.....£4.95 on my phone for the sports package, using vodafone live! so no need for for signing up with credit cards
I'm using it with a Three MiFi Modem and it streams like a dream
Rupert Murdoch - Spawn of The Devil?

Wish this would work in the states. Up the Chels!
Another money scam by apple...This will probably run like crap as well, just like everything else on the iphone.
I would just consider some other phone that atleast is reliable.
Its Sky and O2 you want to be directing your ire towards, sir.
Brilliant... if you like football. :|
It's cool to have soccer on iphone but I just don't think I can enjoy it. i better watch on satellite tv at http://www.satellitedirect.tv/ free!
Just need someone to connect my PC to my iPhone somehow! lol! Wouldn't like to miss another Liverpool vs MU match.
MikeWard1701 - It's really brilliant, cause I just love football.
hey i downloaded this last night in the UK on O2 with the 3 month trial and nothing to loose. the app itself has a link to cancel the contract at anytime and as long as you do it before the last day of the 3 months you will not be charged. as for the 3g matter, i have a jailbroken iphone as i suspect many others do. if you search for a package on cydia called '3g unrestrictor', you can make almost any app 'think' its using a wifi connection when infact its on 3g. works a treat. it does cost through the cydia store but after paying for it i realised it is possible to get cracked versions for which i cannot give you details.
so right now i can watch sky sports (including espn (extra with the normal sky sports package)) almost anywhere for the price of 3g unrestictor for 3 months. i wouldnt say that was too bad, would you?
