Kohjinsha PA series gets unboxed, looks kind of hardcore
It's sort of difficult for us to say what exactly the Kohjinsha PA is. Part UMPC, part MID and part tablet PC, this mishmash has captivated us for quite some time, and while we were able to spend a few brief moments with it at CEATEC, the crew over at Pocketables was able to snag a shipping unit to unbox. They begin by noting that this thing is far from stylish, and while the hinge is almost laughably large, there's something subtly satisfying about just how chunky it looks. Hit the read link to see if you agree -- it's cool if you don't, you're only hurting feelings.

looks like it should transform into a robot or something
for such a small size, yet having such a big border on the keyboard and screen.
where is the keyboard? all I see is hinge, hinge, hinge!

uhhh....
Needs a bigger hinge.
The hinge is actually the battery, they are using standard cylindrical cells used in most laptop batteries. You need to look at the video Glowplug posted below to understand how small this thing is since Engadget's link has no size comparison.
Its tiny and the hinge doesn't look that bad if you see its relative size. It is 'pocketable'.
There is a video of this already:

I can't believe how much better it looks in the video without the battery installed.. damn batteries..
No the hinge is NOT big - it's everything else on the thing that is so tiny.
What a monstrosity. Evidence the Japanese are no longer #1 in design.
Acura?
... so you're judging an entire race and country's design prowess based on a single no-name product?
@ Blacknimbus
Acura's are designed in the United States at the Acura Design Center in Southern California. The Acura brand doesn't exist in Japan.

That is garbage tech that wasn't even meant to be sold in the USA. Maybe you can get it at Dynamism or something. The manual is in Japanese so why the fuck would you want it? Really. And what about quality of build and customer service? Yeah, you don't know and will probably never know. Engadget has to fill its pages up with shit to stay at the top of its game even if the stuff they review and or unbox are completely worthless to us in the states.

Show us on the doll where Engadget touched you.
Not everyone who reads this site cares about what is available in the states.
LOL @ reading manuals for consumer products.
It does look way hardcore...
Buuut No.
That sucker looks like it could take a beating. I like it, at least.
Actually, it looks like it could give a beating.
it's freakin adorable
Actually, it does look stylish to me...
I really like it, it seems like the perfect device. It folds into almost a gaming tablet with a forward facing camera built in. Thats nice, seems like the perfect device for a long trip
I admit it, I find something mysteriously appealing about the design, and I totally want one.
Looks just like the old Sony C1XS Picturebook series from around the '99-01 timeframe
