Nah, you can do some firmware trickery with some other 3rd party hard drives. I'm not getting into specifics but it's not horribly difficult. Only cost me like 60 bucks to do. If you google around it's pretty easy to find out how to do it.

Pretty sure it applies to custom HDDs as well as unofficial memory cards etc.
You are incorrect. People are running the preview with modified drives and they are still working fine.
