Seiko Ocean Theater alarm clock brings the life aquatic to your bedroom
If you're anything like us, you're terrified of whales for pretty much no reason. Seiko's newest alarm clock -- the Ocean Theater -- probably isn't for you then. Fair enough, but plenty of people are not maladjusted, and we're willing to admit that it's pretty cool, even if it's terrifying. The clock, which responds to touch, can project various marine life upon your walls, and we imagine it'll be a huge hit with children. As you'll see in the video after the break, if this thing works as advertised, it's really rather impressive. The Ocean Theater also doubles as an iPod dock, and will be available from Japan Trends; it's up for pre-order now and runs $235. Like we said, definitely check out the video after the break.

What. The. Fudge?
This thing is $235?? First of all, the animation looks like it was put together with a Coleco Vision. It's got a framerate of what, 5fps? Second of all, you have to take that plastic cover off to see the projections on the wall.
Is it just me, or does this thing seem like a big fat waste of money? It might have been semi-cool in the 70's.
Just wait till hacks it to play pong..
Then.. and only then.. will it be good
thats adorable!
At first look, this reminded me of a toy I had when I was very little (so probably like 1973 or so). It was a white plastic ball with a dark LaDanian-Tomlinson-like shield that you flipped back. It may have just been a radio or something, but it was certainly Discoesque. Wish I still had it. :(
No
Sure, the kids will love it! Until they figure out what 'pixelated' means.
Engadget says "...we are impressed..." ??? Deuh ! ??
This is the most useless, crappy, stupid thing I have ever seen ! This could have been on the shelves in 1984 !
Is this NOS that was forgotten in some warehouse somewhere ?
And I cannot speak of the price. People at Seiko are smoking some weird stuff. Quit the sushis guys !
LOL
I was totally with you until the $235 part. Maybe $23.50?
The square screen that is projected in the blue circle looks like they just put a blue light behind a black and white screen from a ti-89 calculator. About the same frame rate also.
The sight of whales make me hungry. I guess that's one thing Norwegians have in common with the Japanese.
I bought a Phillips wake up light for my girlfriend and it is much more pleasant to wake up to than an alarm clock. http://www.wakeuplight.philips.com/
I'm going to assume the price is a typo from Uber...
So, basically we're all agreed - it would be good if it wasn't so rubbish.
And expensive.
So, basically you turn it on and sit on a couch staring at the moving image for hours? How is that fun? How is that impressive? It's a piece of junk.
The mind boggles as to why this is not in the 'crapgadget' series...
Anyone impressed by this shouldn't be writing gadget reviews. This thing should cost $35 and have sticker saying "Intended for use by children 3 and under". I wouldn't buy this for any of my nieces or nephews because 1. It's no where near worth the asking price, and 2. I don't hate anyone that much.
I'm hoping Laura is just using extreme sarcasm.
F.U. Dolphin!
F.U. Whale!
