Hikari to unleash iFrame Android tablet on Japan (video)
Hikari's iFrame (as opposed to the other, Ubuntu-sportin' iFrame from a while back) is an Android-powered tablet with a skin that's heavy on the widgets and -- in case you're still intimidated by its difficulty -- is also being touted as a photoframe for people who don't mind ugly photoframes. Ideally suited for the kitchen or living room (and, as such, is being marketed towards women -- which we find pretty condescending, truth be told) this bad boy features a 7-inch touchscreen display, SD memory card slot, and WiFi. Due out in Japan sometime next year (no word yet on a stateside release date) look to pay anywhere between $220 and $330 (with the company giving credit to the OS for the low price point). Video after the break.

iFrame? I thought Apple had it's copyrighting claws on that word already, you know, having a pretty lame video standard named that way
Yes! The Jason Widget...I love that one!
What is up with all the jason voorhees shit?
Have you checked the date lately? It's Friday The 13th! Dun dun dunnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn! Be afraid. Be VERY afraid.
seriously you guys @ engadget. the whole jason thing was funny for a while, but it's really getting old and boring now ...
@ JB
Harmless fun. Doesn't undermine the quality of the posts, so what's your problem?
better than apple tablet
ha, you guys are so paranoid.
You bet! And it's surely A LOT cheaper too!
I would love an android tablet on my end table
They could at least tell us what's under the hood. Specs?
Uh, it's got one of them touchable screens...Looks like some nice looking plastic around the edges. Looks like it's got a standing mechanism too. And some buttons on the side, and even a light on the top...I bet it's one of those fancy LED lights too...
By the way, i'm a fan of Bleach as well
Thank You Nathanial for clearing that up for me. I was so confused before, I wasn't sure what to think.
@wsbw
Oniisan! :)
on japan?
That "11/13 Friday" is poorly Photoshopped. At least they could have gotten the angle right.
LOL, the Engadget graphic design staff must have been desperate to leave early and hit the pub.
Was ist das?
I don't know what's less exciting -- the tablet itself or that it runs Android. How much does Google pay these jackasses to pump their OS on engadget?
After living in Japan for a few years I didn't even think to consider the "marketed to housewives" angle condescending. It's so pervasive everywhere and there really are millions upon millions of full-time housewives here.
I thought the iFrame was the japanese localized version of the zippo lighter app...
if this device could handle a PDF reader it can be much better than available e-book readers. I would buy a 10 inch one in that case

I completely agree. You really need to realize that family dynamics differ in other parts of the world.
Damn straight. There is a world outside of America where many live happy, healthy and relatively contented lives... when the U.S. isn't bombing them with "free"-trade agreements and RIAA sponsored political threats backed up by plentiful quantities of high velocity depleted uranium munitions.
a 7 to 9" android tablet with a touchscreen seems like a pretty awesome ereader
Micro$oft have their "iframe" HTML tag, so they'll probably sue too. Why don't companies check that they can use the name internationally? A good, safe name these days is a collection of random letters, ideally unpronouncable.
what's ugly about it? seems like a pretty nice device to me.
now kindle is ugly.. and stupid to boot...
and you guys are all gaga over that and other ereaders
??
goofy
or does it make more sense to pay amazon for content that's free on the internet?
go figure
